They found a dramatic and statistically significant increase in the related cancers of lymphoma and leukemia, along with several histological types of lymphomas, which is of interest because H.J. Roberts had written an article saying that there was a significant increase in the primary lymphoma of the brain.
When you look it up in the neurosurgical literature, there is a rather significant rise in the incidents of what used to be a rare tumor. We're seeing a lot more of the primary lymphoma of the brain, which is a little different than lymphomas you see elsewhere. |

In 2001, the lymphoma returned, this time in his neck. It was removed surgically. Tim again received radiation, though this time it left severe burns on his neck. The following year, a growth on the other side of his neck, moving over his trachea, was diagnosed as a fast-growing lymphoma that required emergency surgery
"He was told that the lymphoma was widespread. An autologous bone marrow and stem cell transplant was done at this time, but it was not successful. There was also concern that the tumors would metastasize to his stomach. |

Both are rare forms of cancer of the lymph nodes. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma accounts for about 5% of cancers in the United States and is mostly found in adults around age 60. Hodgkin's is much rarer and primarily affects younger people between the ages of 15 and 35. Although both conditions can be fatal, they can be treated successfully if caught early. ck can also signal cancer of the thytract. |

Lymphoma occurs when a rare and powerful cell that is the grandmother of all cells—stem cells—can't stop making abnormal lymph tissue. Eventually Harvey's cancer was transformed to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). lymphoma cells and CLL cells both come from lymphocytes, which normally are responsible for making protective antibodies against a wide variety of foreign materials and infectious diseases. The carcinogens that may lay behind both these cancers are unclear, but there are hints that radiation and exposure to some chemicals, especially pesticides and solvents, are involved. |

Immune System Cancers: lymphoma and Leukemias
Over the last few decades, the number of people with immune system cancers, such as lymphomas and leukemias, has been steadily increasing. The situation was thrown into the spotlight when Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis developed an increasingly common form of cancer, known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Suddenly people started to sit up and take notice.
The rise of this cancer has been pretty marked, with the number of people developing it over the last twenty years rising by a massive 80 percent, and showing no signs of slowing. |
| The main forms of immune system cancers are leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. While all of them have increased in incidence over the years, none of these increases have been as dramatic as those of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Despite having different names and characteristics, all these cancers originate from the cells that make up our immune system (see chapter 5), mainly the lymphocytes or white blood cells.
White blood cells play an essential role in protecting the body from all the infections and foreign bodies that we are exposed to. |

We're seeing a lot more of the primary lymphoma of the brain, which is a little different than lymphomas you see elsewhere. When you look back at the original studies done by the G.D. Searle company, they found lymphomas as well as primary brain tumors and tumors of multiple organs. All of this correlation shows that we've got a powerful carcinogenic substance here. It is either acting as a co-carcinogen or a primary carcinogen. Most likely, it's the formaldehyde breakdown product. |

The drug, which has been used for nine years as a cancer drug to treat non-Hodgkins lymphoma, can cause serious side effects in lymphoma patients, including liver problems, but these side effects do not seem prevalent in those with multiple sclerosis—at least not in the nearly two years in which Rituxan has been studied. Some studies show that Rituxan not only helps to stop MS disease progression, but helps patients to recover some of the neurological function that they lost due to MS in earlier months and years. |
| According to FDA officials, Remicade and Enbrel use have a "probable or possible" link to the development of lymphoma, and studies show that several patients' lymphomas regressed once treatment with these medications was discontinued. In other rheumatoid arthritis patients, TNF therapy actually kick-starts new forms of autoimmunity that mimic multiple sclerosis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and psoriasis. Also used in the treatment of Crohn's, anti-TNF therapy has been linked to the development of other autoimmune diseases, such as lupus. |

Cancer—A Response to Rejection
Jeromy has Hodgkin's disease, which is the most common lymphoma. Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of lymphoid tissue that vary in growth rate, also known as lymph cancer. Contemporary medicine has no explanation as to what causes the disease. Hodgkin's disease usually begins in adolescence or between 50 and 70 years of age.
When Jeromy was 22 years old, he noticed two enlarged lymph nodes in his neck. A few days later, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. |

A herbicide, 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D), which is used by homeowners and lawn care companies, has been linked to canine malignant lymphoma. This study, which was undertaken by the National Cancer Institute, determined, "The risk of canine lymphoma rose to a twofold excess with four or more yearly applications of 2,4-D. This herbicide has also been implicated as the source of nonHodgkin's disease in humans."2
The herbicide, 2,4-D is found in one-third of all pesticides and is a component of Agent Orange. |

Here is just a small sampling of facts that illustrate the mind-boggling growth in cancer rates:
Sometimes called the "silent epidemic," over the last several decades incidences of non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL) have been increasing by 3 to 4 percent per year throughout most of the world. In some studies annual increases are as high as 4.2 to 8 percent. These reported increases are corrected for known viral causes of NHL, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and therefore largely exclude AIDS-related lymphomas. |

He takes vitamins and has lymphoma. His family members mistakenly associate the vitamin pills with these diseases. They think Mike's melanoma was caused by taking vitamins. So many people hear TV reports or read articles in newspapers that high-dose vitamin C causes cancer, and even though these reports are later found to be in error, they leave an indelible impression upon the people who first heard them. So few Americans realize how many negative reports about nutritional therapy are planted in the news media. |

Her rheumatologist worried about the ramifications of having her on a roller coaster of prednisone and decided to try Imuran, a chemotherapy medication that suppresses the immune system in general, which he and Joy had been hoping to avoid since it carries with it a heightened risk of lymphoma and leukemia. She stayed on Imuran for fifteen months. At that point she seemed stable enough that her doctor began to wean her off it, but suddenly she had another severe flare—her joints swelled and she developed pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining of the lungs. She began having severe migraines. |

| Used for 10 years to treat lymphoma, this drug was recently approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It reduces circulatory B-cells, a type of white blood cell that has been shown to play a role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. Rituximab is given by IV infusion once every few months. It may also increase infection risk.

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused when the immune system begins attacking the body itself, causing pain and inflammation in the joints. |

Jeromy received his first chemotherapy treatment in 1979, soon after diagnosis of the lymphoma, but there was no detectible improvement of his condition. In 1982, his doctors added multiple radiation treatments to the regular chemotherapy, but these produced severe side effects, including loss of all body hair and his sense of taste. His distress was considerable. Yet, despite the traumatic experiences caused by the various treatments during the following fourteen years, Jeromy was not willing to give into depression and desperation. |
| Anne was 43 when she was diagnosed with an incurable form of lymphoma and was given only a short time to live. It was strongly recommended that she have radiation and chemotherapy treatments, the two most commonly used methods of combating cancer cells. Anne was aware that the treatments could not only substantially increase the risk of secondary cancer, but also have potentially severe side effects. She refused the treatment, arguing that if the cancer was incurable anyway, why treat it and suffer painful side effects. |
| Before the HIV-AIDS hypothesis, a patient who died from pneumonia, tuberculosis, or a lymphoma died from the respective causes of these diseases. By contrast, a patient who dies from pneumonia today and happens to have antibodies to HIV or P24 in his blood, is automatically labeled and listed as an AIDS victim. People with a low T-cell count in their blood are considered immune deficient, but if they continue having the same condition after testing positive for HIV, they are routinely "sentenced" to AIDS, with or without clinical symptoms. |

Vitamin D prolongs the survival of leukemic mice, and produces complete and partial clinical responses in lymphoma patients.
Sunlight has a paradoxical relationship with melanoma, in that severe sunburning initiates melanoma, whereas long-term regular sun exposure inhibits melanoma
Sun phobia may be counterproductive. Frequent regular sun exposure acts to cause cancers that have a 0.3% death rate with 2,000 U.S. fatalities per year and acts to prevent cancers that have death rates from 20-65% with 138,000 U.S. fatalities per year. |
| While the only real measure of success against cancer is survival, and it's too early to tell his long-term outcome, Mike can see with his own eyes that natural cancer therapy has his lymphoma in retreat. This is something chemotherapy couldn't accomplish.
One of the things that cancer patients, their families and caregivers must do, is dismiss from consideration any disproven or marginal cancer therapies. Instead, create a short list of treatments that are likely to be effective. |
