The first thing many experts advise when you need to lower your cholesterol? Eat less saturated fat, which is found in animal products and dairy foods. This has long been known as an effective way to help lower your cholesterol because saturated fat raises harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.

Then, when medications are necessary, use them with caution, take the lowest dose possible, and make sure to take your supplements to stave off depletion and enjoy the best possible heart health. Next we'll look at anti-inflammatories.

Avocados, olive oil, nuts, beans, soy, and so on are great sources of protein and contain fats that will actually lower your cholesterol.
The best carbohydrates come from fresh whole fruits and vegetables. Avoid all processed foods. An apple is better than apple juice. Whole grains are essential, and avoiding processed grains is critical in developing a healthy diet for everyone, especially the diabetic.
The next best protein and fats come from fish. Cold-water fish such as mackerel, tuna, salmon, and sardines contain those fats we discussed in Chapter 10: omega-3 fatty acids. |

They'd all been led to believe that you need to take medications to lower your cholesterol, and that if you do, you'll lessen your risk of heart disease or even prevent a heart attack.
But taking meds isn't necessarily the best way to prevent heart problems. Too much sugar, not cholesterol, is the real evil. Cutting out sweets and refined carbohydrates—or at least eating a lot less of them—is perhaps the best way to protect your heart.
The reason more cardiologists haven't focused on the evils of sugars and simple carbs rather than cholesterol is because there is no patent on blood sugar. |

Supplements That Might Reduce Your Cardiovascular Risk
To lower your cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, consider taking one or two of these supplements:
• Beta-sitosterol, 1.3 to 3.6 grams daily. This is a natural compound, also referred to as phytosterols, found in vegetables. It reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
• Niacin, 500 to 1,000 mg daily. In addition to lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, this particular form of vitamin B3 raises the "good" high-density lipoprotein form of cholesterol. |

Make the most of good fats. Next, boost your intake of healthful or "smart" fats, such as plant and fish omega-3s and monounsaturated fats (like olive and canola oil, ground flaxseed, and avocados), and your plant sterols and plant stanol esters—conveniently available in margarines such as Take Control or Benecol. |

National Cholesterol Education Program lowers LDL cholesterol as well as treatment with a statin and without the side effects.57
The so-called Mediterranean diet (vegetables, legumes, fruit, cereals, and fish) reduces heart-disease risk and prolongs life.58 Patients with heart disease who followed the Mediterranean diet had a 50% to 70% reduction in recurrent heart attacks.59 These results are twice as good as those of any medication. |

There is a sense that the goal is to lower your cholesterol numbers. You hear this idea that "it's all about your numbers," but it's not really—it's about whether you have lowered your risk of heart disease. Because cholesterol has become a condition, you can define a treatment's success as having a lower cholesterol level, as if cholesterol is of itself the problem."
The problem here is finding effective ways to reduce heart disease, stroke, and premature death, not cholesterol levels. |

REPPED: It's very easy to grow powerful medicines that can lower your cholesterol, protect your heart, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, enhance nervous system function, and protect you from diabetes and many other chronic diseases. Every plant is a pharmaceutical factory provided by nature. It's like a multi-million dollar pharmaceutical laboratory that takes raw materials and converts them into healing medicines. It does this free of charge, without asking anything back from you other than a little bit of care, some water, and some sunlight. |

Manufacturers of aged garlic nutritional supplements, which actually lower cholesterol more powerfully than prescription drugs, cannot claim any health benefits whatsoever without being raided by the FDA and having their inventory confiscated. If you combine that with some soy products, such as tofu or soy milk, and consume healthy nuts like almonds and macadamias in addition to fiber, then you'll dramatically lower your cholesterol and you'll most likely be able to get off statin drugs.
Statin drugs: poison for your brain
What’s really important for people to understand is that statin drugs are very dangerous drugs to be taking, especially if you take them for the long term. |
| REPPED: A recent study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" shows that eating certain foods can lower your cholesterol levels just as well as taking statin drugs. This is the second study we've seen revealing that certain foods are as effective, or even more effective, than prescription drugs in regulating biochemical markers such as cholesterol levels or in treating conditions such as chronic depression. |

| And surprisingly, this eating plan can also lower your cholesterol.
But before you banish carbohydrates, remember your diet must provide all the nutrients you need. When you limit vegetables, fruit, and grains, you put your health at risk.
In addition, a high-protein diet usually means more saturated fat - which can block your arteries — and an overabundance of ketones — waste products from protein and fat. A buildup of ketones in your blood, called ketosis, can increase production of uric acid, a risk factor for gout and kidney stones. |

| Maximize the power of statins
Your doctor may have prescribed a statin to help lower your cholesterol. Statins, like Zocor or Upitor, do wonders for your cholesterol, but you can help them work even better. Here are effective strategies to help you maximize the power of statins.
Try the Mediterranean approach. A Finnish study found that eating a healthy diet and taking simvastatin (the generic name of Zocor) works better than either approach by itself.
People in the study ate a modified Mediterranean diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. |

• Consider red yeast rice if your physician is unhappy about your cholesterol levels. Make sure the doctor monitors your liver enzymes and overall progress. Add coenzyme Q10 to reduce the risk of muscle problems.
• If your doctor prescribes a statin-type drug, ask for the lowest possible dose to start and monitor your progress. At the first sign of muscle pain or weakness, notify your physician immediately. Coenzyme Q10 may reduce the risk of some side effects. |

| Healthy habits
To lower your cholesterol, you'll need more than a healthy diet. Make the following steps part of your overall approach to a healthier heart.
• Exercise. Just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, slow jogging, or riding an exercise bike, can help lower LDL cholesterol.
• Lose weight if you're overweight. Maintain a healthy weight once you achieve it.
• Stop smoking.
• Check your family history. Knowing you might be at risk can give you an edge in prevention.
• Get your cholesterol levels checked by a doctor.

In large population studies, it is clear that the lower your cholesterol, the lower your risk of heart problems, until you reach a threshold of about 150 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/l). My suggestion is to use that as your goal rather than the more permissive "official" figure.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is often called bad cholesterol because it raises your risk of heart problems and other blood vessel complications. According to the US government, your LDL should be below 100 mg/dl (2. |
| There are foods you might want to add to your diet, though, because they can actually lower your cholesterol or protect against the damage that cholesterol can cause. ţOats, beans, and barley contain soluble fiber that reduces cholesterol levels. You have no doubt heard that oatmeal, Cheerios, and other oat products have this effect, and they have become popular for exactly that reason. But do not forget the cholesterol-lowering power of the humble bean, which also contains soluble fiber. Eating a 4-ounce serving of beans every day cuts cholesterol levels significantly. |
| Thus, if you were to try to lower your cholesterol by simply switching from beef to chicken and fish, you would have one arm tied behind your back. As shown in clinical tests, the cholesterol-lowering effect of a switch from red meat to white meat is minimal—only about 5 percent.3 Most people who follow such diets have no measurable improvement within their arteries, either—on average, their artery blockages continue to get worse as time goes by.
