REPPED: With all the focus on low-carb versus low-fat diets in the news these days, you might think those are the only two options to consider when it comes to losing weight and reversing obesity. Proponents of one diet or the other debate over the merits of their particular dieting strategy, but neither seem to recognize that the entire "low-carb versus low-fat diet" argument only serves as a distraction from the real solution to weight loss: shifting to a unprocessed, non-manufactured foods. |
| In reality, virtually all processed foods are unhealthy for human consumption, even if they are low-fat or low-carb. Thus, the argument about low-fat diets versus low-carb diets ignores the far more important question: processed foods versus unprocessed foods.
What is an unprocessed food? These are foods made from natural ingredients -- the way foods are found in nature. All fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, herbs, and fresh meat products are unprocessed foods. |

Aim for one or two servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy products every day. Your best bets include 1 cup of low-fat or fat-free yogurt, Vi cup of low-fat cottage cheese, 1 cup of low-fat or fat-free milk, and 1 ounce of reduced-fat or low-fat cheese such as part-skim mozzarella or feta.
Among fats, separate the good from the bad and the ugly. The good fats contain mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which tend to increase "good" HDL cholesterol and decrease "bad" LDL cholesterol. Examples of these beneficial fats include olive, canola, soy, sunflower, safflower, and flaxseed oils. |

Conversely, a low-fat diet has been shown to reduce the risk of many cancers. An additional benefit of a low-fat diet is the fact that it helps most people maintain a healthy weight. Besides total fat intake, the type of fat in the diet appears to affect cancer risk. There are many different types of dietary fat; some have tumor-promoting properties, and others have tumor-inhibiting properties.
Saturated fat has the strongest link to colon and prostate cancer. Some research shows polyunsaturated fat to have a moderately significant relationship to cancer. |

The real test about weight loss should compare diets consisting of processed foods versus unprocessed foods. What is a processed food? It's a food that is manufactured and typically sold in pretty packaging at a very high markup price over the cost of its basic ingredients. |

| And that's precisely why you continued to see the headlines dominated by the rather worthless discussion of low-fat versus low-carb diets. It's a classic shell game deception, all orchestrated for your entertainment by the very same industry that's giving you chronic disease. |

Interestingly, the low-carb diet was three times more effective at losing weight from the trunk area of the body than a low-fat diet. That may be of special interest to many people who are looking at ways to eliminate abdominal fat.
The Atkins diet is under fire these days, with some people claiming their ridiculous consumption of high fat foods was "recommended" by the Atkins diet and that, therefore, their cardiovascular disease is the fault of Atkins Nutritionals. |

Lunch could consist of canned tuna fish or salmon with low-fat mayonnaise and cucumber slices on top of a slice of lettuce. For a change of pace, eat four to six slices of low-fat sliced cheese with mustard, or go with the tofu cheese. Use nuts as snacks if you get hungry between lunch and dinner. Dinner requires a bit more work in that you will have to prepare the main dish—either chicken, turkey, or fish. If you crave red meat, that's okay, but not more than once a week. Limiting red meat reduces your fat intake while still giving you a lot of protein.

In addition, the study showed that low-fat diets had zero health benefits in regard to avoiding the risk of getting cancer and heart disease. The study cost the American taxpayers $415 million, but this money seems to have been wasted. The mass media, medical industry and food manufacturers have not taken much notice of this important finding. In the meanwhile, the low-fat hysteria continues to escalate.

Fifteen men who were scheduled to undergo repeat prostate biopsy were instructed to follow a low-fat, flaxseed-supple-mented (30 grams/day) diet for six months. PSA was reduced (from about 8.5 points to about 5.75 points). Tumor growth slowed significantly. [Urology 63:900-4, 2004]
Among men awaiting prostate surgery, a low-fat diet with 30 grams of flaxseed meal per day for 21-77 days experienced a drop in testosterone; PSA scores remained about the same, but Gleason scores dropped. [Urology 58:47-52, 2001]

While Americans continue to debate the merits of low-carb versus low-fat diets, the real truth about how to lose weight never gets openly discussed: and that is to stop buying manufactured foods and turn to natural foods / whole foods the way they are found in nature.
Quiz time: can you guess why there is never a discussion about moving away from manufactured foods? Simple: manufactured foods are extremely profitable. Grocery stores make far more money on manufactured foods than fresh vegetables. |

According to Schwarzbein, the high carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster to the point of acquiring degenerative diseases, and it also keeps them fat and unhealthy as well. |

I think part of the problem with bananas was that they suffered from guilt by association with the typical 1980s "low-fat" breakfast of crummy processed commercial cereal, skim milk, orange juice, and toast, a nightmare from a blood sugar point of view. The occasional banana, particularly one that's not overripe, is really not a problem for most people.

Or maybe they'll buy some low-fat "goodies" that are likely filled with sugar and not even necessarily low calorie. Or they'll grab quickie-carb crunchies that, 9 times out of 10, have used some kind of sweetener. Obviously, all those extra snacks can lead to episodes of SUGAR SHOCK!
Coupled with our desire for convenience is a parallel trend. Indeed, about 64 percent of all meals are eaten outside the home. And much of that budget goes to fat-filled, processed fast foods, inevitably containing fast-acting carbs as a major component of the meal (think hamburger buns, fries, and onion rings). |

The DASH diet is high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods and low in saturated and total fats. It is also low in cholesterol but high in fiber, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The DASH diet, along with a sodium intake of less than 2,400 mg per day, results in significantly lower blood pressures—systolic pressure that is 7 points lower in patients without hypertension and 11.5 points lower in those with hypertension.129 The characteristics of the DASH diet are described in Table 9.3.

Americans tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to the word fat, even when it's a healthy fat. The low-fat food craze has left behind a terrible misperception in the minds of Americans—that "low in fat" means healthy, and that fats in general are bad. Yet this is far from the truth!
From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Diana Schwarzbein has concluded that:

She supports her theory with case studies of people who were sick and unhealthy on high carbohydrate, low-fat diets, but who sprang back to life when they "balanced" their diets with more fat and protein. |
