Pulmonary function is a strong predictor of overall longevity. Anxiety, stress, and exposure to various chemicals in the air contribute greatly to the deterioration of the lungs. Building up all of your biochemicals, particularly GABA, will have a great impact on lung longevity. Aerobic exercises can also help develop greater lung capacity.
ADRENOPAUSE
Between the ages of thirty and sixty, the adrenal glands' secretion of DHEA—which slows the growth of cancers and boosts immunity— declines. After age seventy, production of the stress hormone Cortisol soars. |
| I cannot say it more plainly: sleep and relaxation behavior predict longevity.
A serotonin imbalance produces sleep disorders, although sometimes GABA imbalances can cause disturbances as well. By building up your serotonin, not only will you sleep better, but you also allow your dopamine and acetylcholine to replenish. This increase can help get you to the Edge Effect: you will have more power and energy all day long. What's more, new research suggests that good sleep may be essential in maintaining a healthy immune system. |

Finally, the longevity of Okinawans has been attributed to many factors besides soy consumption. Indeed the three authors of the Okinawa Centenarian Study name caloric restriction as "the key to eating the Okinawa way." And although they share the good news that diet, not genes, is the key to longevity—meaning we too can live long and well if we follow their plans—Dr. Suzuki has reported elsewhere38 that the genes of Okinawan centenarians actually do differ from those of normal individuals and are a factor in their superior longevity. |

Conclusion
In Taoist health & longevity systems, there has always been a strong link between sexual potency, immune response, cerebral function, and longevity. Magnesium is the most essential nutrient mineral to all of these factors. We will live healthier, happier and longer lives if we make sure we completely satisfy our body's need for magnesium. Not only do our cells need an abundant reserve of magnesium in the body, we need to absorb a sufficient replenishing amount each and every day.

Also, longevity in retirement homes is linked with higher levels of cholesterol. Recent studies published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) indicate that a low level of overall blood cholesterol could increase a person's risk of suicide.
A study published in The Lancet in 1997 showed that high total cholesterol levels are associated with longevity, particularly among the elderly. The research suggests that elderly people with elevated cholesterol levels live longer and are less likely to die from cancer or infection. |

A recent report [125] has demonstrated that homozygosity for the APOC3-641C allele is associated with a favorable lipoprotein profile, cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, and longevity. Because modulation of lipoproteins is also seen in genetically altered longevity models, it may be a common pathway influencing lifespan from nematodes to humans.

By 2002, in a list of the longevity in thirty nations, sixty-five-year-old American women came in seventeenth.
American men have also fallen in the international rankings of life expectancy. The average sixty-five-year-old American man can now expect a shorter life than a man his age living in Mexico.
No one knows exactly why the United States is falling behind in the international rankings of longevity despite spending far more on medical care per person than any other country on the planet. |

| Results showed that biventricular pacemakers, used in conjunction with standard drug therapy, dramatically improved quality of life and longevity. People in the pacemaker group were 37% less likely to die or have an unplanned hospitalization due to a heart problem than the drug-only group.
Based on these findings, researchers estimate that for every nine pacemakers that are implanted in heart failure patients who have synchronization problems, one death and three hospitalizations for major cardiovascular events will be prevented. |
| One of the sisters in the Nun Study, who was 91 years old when she was interviewed, attributed her longevity to an exercise program that she started when she was 70.
Exercise improves blood circulation in the brain and lowers blood pressure. It also lowers stress hormones and stimulates the release of trophic factors—brain proteins that repair neurons and keep them functioning at peak capacity.
What to do: Exercise daily. Even light physical activity, such as walking or yardwork, increases the release of trophic factors and promotes better cognitive function. |

But it had been the social implications of her behavior that had swayed her, once again demonstrating the importance of taking a multisphere approach to longevity.
The reason that compels you to finally make a lifestyle change you've been resisting for ages is not necessarily the most obvious or the most dramatic. It is not the same reason that might compel someone else to make those changes. But it resonates with you. Needless to say, the more reasons you consider, and the more spheres you cover, the more likely you are to find the one that motivates you. |

While it's obviously important to keep your biological systems from breaking down, the real secret to longevity isn't whether or not you break; it's how well you recover and repair when you do. Our bodies, in fact, weren't designed not to break down (legs as thick as redwoods may not break, but they wouldn't be very nimble). They were designed with a great efficiency and ability to repair themselves.
As with a car, you'll get a lot more mileage out of your body if you perform routine maintenance. |

SPHERE #3: KINSHIP
Everyone you interact with has some effect on your longevity. The people in your life, other friends or family, can offer you stability. They can offer you support in times of stress or personal sadness. They can laugh with you and remind you to lighten up. |
| Social networks provide an intangible path to longevity and good health. Take the drama of needing exercise. First scene: You want to exercise, but your spouse says you all need more family time. Second scene: The kids want to eat and go to the neighborhood pool. Third scene: You pack a gigantic picnic lunch full of improbable leftovers, then take a walk or bike ride to the pool. Final scene: Have a delicious, silly lunch before you all go swimming. |

This allows us to take advantage of the fiber and other longevity boosters foods have to offer. Unfortunately, getting all of our nutrients this way is quite difficult for many of us. And that's where multivitamins come in. They are our nutritional insurance policies, providing reasonable compensation for the flaws in our daily diets. They are not a substitute for eating, however. You can't starve yourself and expect a multivitamin, or even a whole handful of them, to give you everything you could obtain from a day's worth of food. |

Once you understand these new principles of longevity, you'll be better equipped to shift your actions. These five principles will change the way you think about the way your body ages.
/. Aging Is Really About Trade-offs
Despite what you think, aging—in the traditional way that we think of it, with everything slowly and painfully shutting down—isn't "meant to be." It's not an effect of life. It's actually more of a side effect of a grander plan for humans.
A lot of people think that creaky joints, craggy nails, and cranky bowels are simply part of the deal. |
| Since life expectancy was low anyway, these people never had to worry about the long-term complications from diabetes that we have to deal with; it was simply a biological advantage because it protected them long enough to survive the ice, reproduce, and ensure the longevity of the species.
Because our bodies are designed to run on a relatively low level of glucose, when we overeat and indulge in a sedentary lifestyle, we're unable to process the extra glucose—thus pickling ourselves in all the excess—and our metabolic system malfunctions. |
| This serves as another example of an evolutionary trade-off between procreation and longevity. To protect us from deficiencies of vitamin D, we've evolved to have higher levels of cholesterol. So now we survive to mate and to be able to stand up strong and look good, only to be felled by high LDL cholesterol and consequent heart disease and stroke.
Here's another interesting way to look at these biological trade-offs: If you have low levels of UVB penetration, then you need higher cholesterol, which can be more readily converted to vitamin D. |

| First, despite our great "advancements" in the treatment of diabetes, there are a significant number of countries,9 including Israel, Australia, and Scandinavia, where diabetics' longevity surpasses that of the U.S. Second, diabetics are not the only chronic disease sufferers to be harmed by government.
The FDA has also allowed 18 million diabetics to become experimental guinea pigs for the insulin cartel. The big lies, which have already been described, allowed insulin manufacturers to remove safe, pure, and proven, non-prescription analog insulins. |

NEW WAYS TO LOOK AT DIABETES
We want you to get used to several new ways of looking at diabetes, ways that we are almost certain you have not heard discussed but that are fundamental to understanding, preventing, and managing the disease, as well as enhancing quality of life and longevity in people with type 2 diabetes.
Tame Your Gene Expression
Foremost is an idea we mentioned previously: that you can dramatically influence how the genes involved in glucose metabolism are expressed. Although you can't change your genes, you can change the degree of expression of your genes. |

So the whole effect of low-calorie diets may be related to decreasing metabolism and, therefore, a better way to increase longevity is to improve the body's antioxidant defenses rather than dramatically and dangerously lowering nutrient intake.
Along this same line, but less well-known, is the observation that low-protein diets also increase longevity and high-protein diets are linked to shortened life spans. If confirmed, this finding could diminish the popularity of the high-protein diets being advocated by some popular authors. |
