The light bulb exploits new technology in the area of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) to deliver a high-brightness, energy efficient light bulb that contains only three LEDs. It fits into any standard light bulb socket and lasts 50,000 hours before needing to be replaced (more than a decade of normal use). Because of its extreme energy efficiency, the light reduces CO2 emissions by 3,570 pounds over its life, compared to a typical 40-watt light bulb. It also saves consumers $178.50 in electricity over its life, more than paying for itself in savings on the electric bill. |
| This small, simple light can help consumers greatly reduce their environmental footprint while helping prevent global warming," said EcoLEDs founder Mike Adams, an outspoken advocate of natural health and environmental protection. "They represent a new era in environmentally friendly lighting, and they make incandescent lights and fluorescent lights virtually obsolete."
Currently, about twenty percent of the electricity used in the United States is used to power lights. |

Did you know that the California power plant energy crisis from a few years ago could have been entirely avoided if every household in the state had simply switched to a single LED light bulb?
Twenty percent of the electricity used in the United States goes to power lights, and an astonishing ninety percent of that electricity is right now wasted. Through the extremely efficient lighting products offered by EcoLEDs (www.EcoLEDs.com), I intend to put a stop to that waste. Watch NewsTarget.com for more announcements on this revolution in Earth-friendly lighting products. |
| These LED lights, which replace regular light bulbs in homes and offices worldwide, greatly reduce CO2 emissions, save money on electricity and contain no mercury like compact fluorescent light bulbs do.
Better Life Goods (www.BetterLifeGoods.com) - An online retailer of innovative products for sustainable living. Currently, Better Life Goods carries our EcoLEDs lighting products and superior quality NiMH rechargeable batteries that offer tremendous savings in both money and natural resources compared to throwaway alkaline batteries. |
| I'll also be conducting in-depth scientific reviews of the ACTUAL energy usage of various light bulbs using a watt meter, a professional light meter and a remote temperature sensor. Each bulb will be shown with its associated CO2 emissions and landfill statistics, as well as any possible harm to the environment caused by the use of hazardous substances. In all, you'll soon see the most exhaustive investigation ever conducted on consumer lighting technologies and their implications for the future of our planet. |

REPPED: Do you realize how much energy it takes to light your home? In the U.S., the average household spends 20 percent of its electricity bill on lighting. BanTheBulb.org is a website dedicated to teaching consumers how to save money and protect the environment by using energy-efficient light bulbs.
According to the website, their goal is to ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by specific dates, starting with 60W and 100W incandescent bulbs. |
| Energy saving is an essential part of the EU's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions, but 80 percent of home lighting today uses highly inefficient incandescent bulbs that convert only five percent of the energy they consume into light.
This month, "at an EU conference hosted by Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the European Union's leaders announced their intention to ban incandescent light bulbs, for the 490 million people living within the EU's 27 countries, by 2010," according to the website. |
| They also contain a remarkably high amount of toxic mercury -- about 4mg - 6mg per fluorescent light bulb.
About 30,000 pounds of mercury are dumped into the environment each year due to the disposal of compact fluorescent light bulbs. That's an enormous amount of mercury, and almost half of the total amount of mercury emitted into the atmosphere by coal-fired power plants.
Many state governing agencies have even adopted their own regulations regarding fluorescent lights. |

Incandescent light bulbs typically burn out every 1,000 hours. LEDs mostly fail by dimming over time, rather than with the abrupt burnout of incandescent bulbs.
One great advantage about LEDs is that they are difficult to damage with external shock. Fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, on the other hand, are easily broken if dropped on the ground.
LED lights contain absolutely no mercury or toxic chemicals, and conventional LEDs are made from a variety of inorganic semiconductor materials. |

One section from the website sums up the ambition behind this project: "Let's just hope that more politicians start to mention how they intend to decide which light bulbs should be banned (and by when!), what they are going to do to ensure that all CFLs are responsibly recycled, how they are going to help the poor to change their lighting, whether any heavily-taxed incandescent bulbs are going to remain available for specialist purposes, which other wasteful technologies they would like to get banned and/or which other energy-efficient technologies they would like to help get established... |

Energy Saver statistics to be printed on washing machines, dryers and other household appliances, but NOT on incandescent light bulbs (which are, by any measure, the least efficient household appliances of all)? I think we should start with mandated labeling that shows the lifetime cost of each bulb sold at retail so that consumers can start to see the different in the total cost of ownership right there at the point of purchase.
That would, for the first time, make consumers acutely aware of what it costs them to operate a light bulb, not to even mention the cost to the planet. |

It's like the "oil" light on your dashboard. Unfortunately, what most doctors do is, if your oil light goes off, they'll put a Band-Aid over the oil light and say, "It's not bothering you anymore," and then your car dies. In human beings, all doctors have been taught is to give Motrin or Celebrex medications and Tylenol -- and narcotics if you have cancer. That's all your doctor knows about pain management, and it's pathetic because there are hundreds of effective treatments.
The first thing you do is treat the underlying cause of the pain. I call it, instead of the oil light, the SHIN light. |

But fluorescents don't produce a steady light, and they burn out more quickly when cycled frequently; they also contain items such as fluorine, neon, and lead powder as well as mercury.
Measuring the environmental impact of mercury use in a particular product is more complicated than you might think. Mercury is an essential element in millions of fluorescent lamps throughout the world, and as those lamps are thrown into landfill, the mercury can escape and contribute to air and water pollution. (It can easily leach into groundwater supplies.)
According to www.lightbulbrecycling. |
| It only takes 4mg of mercury to contaminate up to 7,000 gallons of freshwater, meaning that the 30,000 pounds of mercury thrown away in compact fluorescent light bulbs each year is enough to pollute nearly every lake, pond, river and stream in North America (not to mention the oceans).
Controlling the waste
Many state governing agencies have adopted their own regulations regarding the disposal of fluorescent lights. In California, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, it is unlawful for anyone to dispose of fluorescent bulbs as universal waste. |
| Breaking one mercury light bulb in your home can contaminate your home to such a degree that hazardous materials experts are needed to remove the mercury. (At great cost, too. A typical mercury removal effort involving the breaking of a single fluorescent light can cost several thousand dollars.) The idea of allowing mercury to be placed in an easily breakable consumer product is fraught with public safety risks. In fact, it required a special exemption from the EPA to allow mercury-fluorescent lamps to be sold to consumers in the first place. |

According to the website, their goal is to ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by specific dates, starting with 60W and 100W incandescent bulbs. The organization promotes energy efficiency and conservation by explaining the benefits of greater energy efficiency while encouraging the adoption of available technologies. It also supports a higher tax on incandescent light bulbs to make fluorescent lights more cost competitive.
The EU has recently announced its intention to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020. |

But can people do math anymore?
Of course, all this requires that consumers can actually follow basic math... or even read labels, for that matter. And given the fact that even many high school graduates today are functionality illiterate (and mathematically inept), there will always be a few stragglers left behind, buying incandescent light bulbs along with Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Doritos and Diet Coke. |

As a consumer, you see, you're really buying hours of light, not just the bulbs that produce the light. The cost of the bulb is the smallest part of the equation. You'll find a similar situation with inkjet printers and inkjet cartridges. The printer might only cost $49 up front, but you might spend several hundred dollars in ink cartridges in a single year in order to operate the printer. Thus, the Total Cost of Ownership of the inkjet printer must take into the account the cost of the ink. |
| Prices are falling by 50% a year on LED components, which means LED light bulbs will get increasingly affordable with each passing year.
Even right now, buying LED lights makes great economic sense. They pay you back in 1-2 years in electricity costs alone (depending on how much you pay for electricity), not to mention the benefits of protecting the environment from more CO2 and mercury emissions. That's an environmental cost that consumers rarely factor into their monthly electricity bill, but it's a very real cost associated with wasting electricity. |
| As it turns out, a 100-watt light bulb actually uses 101.5 watts of electricity. Over 50,000 hours (which would require replacing it 50 times with a new bulb), it will use 5,075 kilowatt-hours of electricity, costing approximately $500 (based on ten cents per kilowatt-hour). So a 100-watt light bulb actually costs you $500 to operate over 50,000 hours. On top of that, it produces a whopping 10,150 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions which directly promote global warming and climate change. |
