Beat Diabetes Naturally: The Best Foods, Herbs, Supplements, and lifestyle Strategies to Optimize Your Diabetes Care

Michael T. Murray
See book keywords and concepts
All in all, this was a moving experience in many ways and it motivated me to take lifestyle counseling, early diabetes detection, and aggressive diabetes management very seriously in all of my overweight patients. I am quite sure that I (now in my mid forties) would be a diabetic by now if I had let my "bad" genes dictate my fate, but I have avoided this by always paying close attention to my way of life and what goes into my mouth.
Unfortunately, many Americans stress these control mechanisms through diet and lifestyle. As a result, diabetes and other disorders of blood sugar regulation are among the most common disease of modern society. A Diabetes Primer Although we think of diabetes as a blood sugar disorder, it actually affects much more than blood sugar. It is also characterized by abnormalities in fat and protein metabolism, inflammation, and immune system function. The hormone insulin is at the center of diabetes.
Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) make it quite clear that diabetes is a disease of diet and lifestyle. Of individuals with type 2 diabetes, 69 percent did not exercise at all or did not engage in regular exercise; 62 percent ate fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables per day; 65 percent consumed more than 30 percent of their daily calories from fat and more than 10 percent of total calories from saturated fat; and 82 percent were either overweight or obese.7 was combined with low physical activity, the risk for type 2 diabetes nearly doubled.

You Don't Have to be Afraid of Cancer Anymore

Sugar and breast cancer Researchers in Italy attempted to sort out which dietary or lifestyle factors can be attributed to breast cancer risk. The results of their study were as follows: Lifestyle factors breast cancer risk High alcohol intake 10.7% Low beta carotene intake 15.0% Low vitamin E intake 8.6% Low physical activity 11.6% This still only explains about 40% of cases. [Journal National Cancer Institute 90: 389-94, 1998] Other studies estimate dietary and lifestyle factors may be responsible for 33-55% of breast cancer cases.

Results from other studies corroborate this hypothesis. lifestyle changes alone are associated with a 58 percent reduced risk of developing diabetes in people at high risk due to evidence of impaired glucose tolerance based upon the results from the Diabetes Prevention Program—a large intervention trial of more than 1,000 subjects. The two major goals of the program were a minimum of 7 percent weight loss/weight maintenance and a minimum of 150 minutes per week of physical activity similar in intensity to brisk walking.

If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It! The No-nonsense Guide to an Eating-for-Health Lifestyle

Kelly Harford, M.C., C.N.C.

The remaining two chapters of Section One focus on building a new foundation for creating a healthier eating lifestyle based on the concepts of Eating for Health; the most important concept of which became the title of this book: if it's not food don't eat it. At its very core, Eating for Health is about putting your health at the forefront of your mind when making food choices. It is not a fad or a special diet.
These top ten suggestions will be a tremendous help to you when talking to your dear ones about your intentions to create a healthier eating lifestyle for yourself, and garner their help as well. Do take the time to have this talk with your loved ones even if it feels a little out of your comfort zone. It will pay off in the long run and help you to move in the direction you want to go. If Debbie had had a talk as outlined here with her husband and close girlfriends from the very beginning, she could have spared herself a great deal of physical discomfort and internal turmoil.
It made me realize that making people aware of Scary Statistics in an effort to inspire them to make changes in their diet and lifestyle, is no different from a mother slapping the hand of her child aiming to stick its finger in a light socket. Tough love is sometimes in order, especially when complacency has taken over. Like the mother doing the hand slapping, it is not popular to tell people things they don't want to hear. However unpleasant it might be, sharing the Scary Statistics can be very useful.
Of equal importance is the psychological mindset with which you approach making changes in your diet and lifestyle. After reading the Eating-for-Health Guidelines for the first time, some people may react by thinking, "Gosh, I can't eat anything!" Watch yourself on this one, it is simply not true. We have grown accustomed to eating a very small percentage of the foods available to us. Once again, turn to the Suggested Foods chapter and see all the things Mother Nature has provided for your sustenance and enjoyment. The list of foods to avoid is quite small in comparison.

At that point in my life, my obesity- and diabetes-prone genes were in complete harmony with my athletic lifestyle, and I looked and felt better than ever before, even though I probably packed away more than 5,000 calories per day or more (all wholesome food) just to fuel my big commute! I still exercise almost every day, but because I don't have the time or the inclination to ride a bike 70 miles per day, I have to watch my diet very closely or the "thrifty genes" take over and I gain weight at the drop of a hat.

Elderly women benefit strongly from nutrition and lifestyle changes, new research reveals

REPPED: A new study reveals that it is never too late to make lifestyle changes that dramatically reduce your risk of cancer. It contradicts the common myth that it's too late to make changes if you are in your 50's or 60's. In contrast, the study revealed that out of 29,000 women between the ages of 55 to 69 whose lifestyle habits were tracked, those who followed healthy recommendations such as eating fruits and vegetables and avoiding tobacco use were remarkably healthier 12 years later.
This is a fascinating study, but what if they had reversed it and took a look at whether people who are healthy in their 50's and 60's can change their lifestyle and become couch potatoes in 12 years or less? May be that study would be titled, "It's never too late to throw away your health by eating junk foods and adopting a sedentary lifestyle." Wait a minute. Come to think of it, that study is already in progress and virtually all Americans are participating in it. And by the way, who actually followed these 29,000 elderly women for 12 years?

Genetic Screening for Diabetes Risk Although dietary, lifestyle, and environmental variables far outweigh genetics as the primary causative factors in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, it is also clear that people can inherit various degrees of susceptibility to type 1 and, even more so, to type 2 diabetes. Now that the human genetic code has been completely broken, great strides are being made in the development of practical laboratory tests that will allow people to become aware of their risk for developing diabetes and a multitude of other diseases.

Mike: And, of course, if the pet's owner had changed the animal's lifestyle sooner, what would its longevity be? Newman: I have been doing the holistic lifestyle care for more than 20 years now. I have really been keeping track of it for 15 years. We know prevention is the best cure. For those people who get their puppies and kittens started on the holistic animal care lifestyle -- and are very careful about vaccinating, because we very much over-vaccinate in this country -- we find they live a very long and stress-free life. They are emotionally more secure and physically, more sound.

Part of the problem is societal: we are confronted with daily social pressure to conform to a high-fossil-fuel-consuming lifestyle, so personal behavioural change in reality requires a lot of courage. Those who make the effort are frequently dismissed as 'tree-huggers' or 'sandal-wearers' by the mainstream. A high-energy lifestyle is often seen as a badge of social success: TV and cinema adverts seek to establish high-performance cars as status symbols, for example, whilst professional people may boast about how much international travel they do.

Breast Cancer Industry A Scam? Support Education, Not Medication

Yet even the World Health Organization admits that 70 percent of all cancers can be prevented through simple changes in food and lifestyle. That number is probably conservative, though. My own opinion is that 90 percent of all cancers can be prevented through simple food and lifestyle changes. Yet no one in the cancer industry seems interested in teaching any of these strategies to women. In the cancer industry, there is no incentive to teach women how to avoid breast cancer, because to do so would eliminate a future customer!

Moreover, lifestyle factors and environmental stressors may reduce coenzyme Qio concentrations in tissue. One lifestyle stressor is chronic high-intensity exercise. Lower blood levels of coenzyme Qi0 have been observed in studies of athletes, most probably the consequence of an excess of free radicals caused by the increased metabolic demands of chronically exercising muscles. Another environmental factor that may result in coenzyme Qi0 deficiency is the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs such as the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins).

Food Scam: Almond Board of California to falsely label pasteurized almonds as "raw"

With this decision, the Almond Board of California seems surprisingly out of touch with the California lifestyle, which is significantly based on fresh, raw food products like limes, avocados and almonds. The living foods / raw foods movement in the United States is largely a product of the natural California lifestyle, and yet the Almond Board seems to have no hesitation in intentionally mislabeling its cooked almond products as raw, misleading consumers into thinking they're buying live almonds when they aren't. This isn't something that's being covertly pursued, either.

We are starting to see about six or seven types of causes of death in the country, outside of prescription medication, which are really closely tied to our lifestyle. People need to know that heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke -- I mean the list goes on and on -- are really closely related and can be prevented by a healthier lifestyle. So I have really changed my practice to be more involved in wellness and health -- a part of which is teaching people healthy lifestyles. That’s where I have gone in the last ten years. Keep your breasts, and adopt a healthy lifestyle instead -- a lifestyle that supports womens' health. For example, implement a lifestyle of eating fermented soy products and avoiding red meat, especially processed meats. Avoid hydrogenated oils and consume healthy oils instead -- olive oil, macadamia nut oil, salmon oil and flax oil, for example. Eat lots of nuts and seeds in their raw, unprocessed state. Avoid milk and dairy products, food additives, added sugars, artificial food coloring and artificial sweeteners. You know the drill. You know how to be healthy.

Modern medicine typically attributes heart conditions to an array of physical and lifestyle factors, ranging from cholesterol and diet to environmental toxins and stress. While these determinants may be accurate on a purely chemical level, they do little to address the actual reason why the conditions exist. What does "failure of the heart" really mean? Perhaps it's not a coincidence that all the lifestyle factors linked to heart failure are also linked to the force that speaks to the universe itself: human emotion.
