Lactose intolerance is an inability to breakdown one of the sugars in cow's milk. A deficiency of this enzyme is often inherited, and there is a strong association with the disorder and certain ethnic groups. Prevalence among Asian populations is nearly 100 percent, 80 percent among Native Americans, and 70 percent among African Americans. Only 20 percent of the Caucasian population is lactose intolerant. Malabsorption syndrome can exist without an underlying cause, but it is often associated with other disorders, such as cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, lactose intolerance, and gluten intolerance (sprue, Crohn's disease; see inflammatory bowel disease).

(aka lactose intolerance). Lactase is an enzyme necessary to break down lactose in the digestive tract. If this enzyme is missing, many foods, including milk and other dairy products, of which lactose is a major component can't be digested properly and the end result is gas.
