The main waste product resulting from the anaerobic breakdown of glucose by cancer cells is lactic acid, which may explain why the body of a cancer patient is so acidic, in contrast to the naturally alkaline body of a healthy person.
To deal with the dangerously high levels of lactic acid and to find another source of energy, the liver reconverts some of the lactic acid into glucose. In doing so, the liver uses 1/5 the energy per glucose molecule that a normal cell can derive from it, but that's three times the energy a cancer cell will get from it. |

Metformin rarely causes lactic acidosis, a buildup of lactic acid in the blood, which makes the blood more acidic and which can be fatal. The signs of lactic acidosis include deep and rapid breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Side effects of metformin include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, bloating, and loss of appetite. Rare side effects include a metallic taste in the mouth and reductions in vitamin B12. Glucovance is a combination of glyburide and metformin.
The known side effects and limited efficacy of these drugs led to a search for more-effective drugs with fewer side effects. |

It turned out that some people with anxiety disorders had elevated levels of lactic acid in their blood compared to nonanxious exercisers, and researchers found that infusing anxiety patients with lactic acid induced panic attacks. Doctors began advising patients with any form of anxiety to avoid exercise, lest it trigger an attack. Better to stay still.
This logic persisted despite a number of follow-up studies that disproved the hypothesis. Although the medical literature tells us that a handful of patients did panic during exercise, the vast majority showed just the opposite effect. |

Jack Goldberg of GO-Diet fame points out, when you ferment milk, you inoculate it with lactic acid bacteria, which then "eats up" almost all of the milk sugar (lactose) and converts it into lactic acid, the stuff that curds the milk and gives the product its unique taste. So the milk sugar that the government thinks is left in the product is really just about gone—it's been "converted" in the fermenting process by the lactic acid bacteria. The "real" amount of carbohydrate left in 'A cup of plain yogurt or kefir is only 2 grams—this has been measured by Goldberg in his own lab. |

In doing so, the liver uses 1/5 the energy per glucose molecule that a normal cell can derive from it, but that's three times the energy a cancer cell will get from it. To help feed the cancer cells, the body even grows new blood vessels, funneling more and more sugar towards them. This means that the more the damaged cancer cells multiply, the less energy is available to the normal cells, hence the sugar cravings. |

When cells are oxygen deprived, pyruvate is further metabolized to lactic acid (or lactate), causing the acidity in the cell to rise. The increase in cellular acid concentration has two major effects. First, it tells the cell that more energy is needed, triggering additional energy metabolism. Second, it can cause cellular stress if it builds up to high levels. In skeletal muscles an increase in lactic acid concentration causes a burning sensation and stimulates cramping, telling the cell it has to stop what it's doing and rest. In hearts, it contributes to the pain associated with angina. |
| Strenuous exercise can result in high levels of lactic acid, which makes the blood and tissues too acidic. I can remember as a college wrestler the exhaustion I experienced after nine-minute matches. Sometimes I was extremely weak, exhausted, and even disoriented following matches that went into overtime. Once, I was so out of it that I walked over to the other team's bench and sat down! I didn't know it back then, but L-carnitine would have been a vital nutrient to take to help clear lactic acid from my blood and tissues. |

LACTOBACILLUS BULGARICUS ž"Lactobacillus bulgaricus does not colonize in the intestinal tract, is fast growing, and produces lactic acid; it thus promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria that establish a balanced gastrointestinal tract environment. It contributes to digestion, lactose tolerance, the reduction of cholesterol, and the control of intestinal infections and it also enhances immunity."5 žBeneficial L. |

Yogurt is, quite simply, milk that via the work of friendly bacteria has had its naturally occurring lactose, or milk sugar, turned into lactic acid. The work of this transformation is done by those friendly bacteria—the "live active cultures."

It contains lactic acid as the third ingredient, but the pH of the product isn't low enough for it to have exfoliating properties.
S© $$$ Betaplex Gentle Foaming Cleanser ($29 for 6 ounces) is a very good, water-soluble gel cleanser with mild foaming properties. Suitable for all skin types, it contains some good soothing agents (remember, though—it's a cleanser, so the soothing agents will be there only briefly, and so can't provide much of a benefit) and is fragrance-free. |
| A well-formulated, pH-correct exfoliant such as an AHA (glycolic or lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) can handle this problem beautifully.
Genetically, age also is a cause of dryness because as a woman's levels of estrogen drop the skin becomes thinner and the fat deposits under the skin (part of the skin's protect barrier) also become thinner or depleted altogether. Regrettably, there is little th-done about this other than using various types of hormone replacement tbfrohtwork based hormone replacement (phytoestrogens), which you can get Dvim4\ng more water, food or drinks. |
| There is also a good deal of research showing that the use of glycolic acid (and most likely lactic acid) can improve the appearance of skin discolorations, increase collagen production, and reinforce the barrier function of skin (Sources: Dermatologic Surgery, May 2001, pages 429-433; and American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, March-April 2000, pages 81-88).
The fundamental difference between AHAs and BHA is that AHAs are water soluble, while BHA is lipid soluble (that is, oil soluble). |

Lactobacilli produce lactic acid, which acts like a natural antibiotic. These friendly bacteria also compete with other organisms for the utilization of glucose. The production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide by lactobacilli also helps to maintain the acidic pH needed for healthy vaginal flora to thrive. Most of the research has used yogurt containing live cultutes of Lactobacillus acidophilus or the topical application of such yogutt or Lactobacillus acidophilus into the vagina. |

Interestingly, NES matching tests have revealed that osteoarthritis may be a consequence of impaired carbohydrate metabolism at the bioenergetic level. Practitioners of allopathic medicine admit that the causes of arthritis are unknown and speculate that it may have a hereditary genetic factor or be the result of an injury or disease processes that eventually cause the cartilage in joints to deteriorate. |

Arbonne also included lactic acid at about 2%, an amount that's below ideal for exfoliation although the pH of this product is in the correct range. The tiny amount of salicylic acid has no exfoliating action on skin. Although not worthy as an exfoliant, this stably packaged serum is packed with helpful ingredients for skin, from antioxidants to nonirritating plant oils and (mostly) soothing plant extracts. Although the tiny amount of comfrey extract is not likely cause for concern, it keeps this product from earning a Paula's Pick rating. |

In the absence of oxygen, the cell reverts to a primal nutritional program to nourish itself by converting glucose through the process of fermentation. The lactic acid produced by fermentation lowers the cell pH (acid/alkaline balance) and destroys the ability of DNA and RNA to control cell division. The cancer cells then begin to multiply. The lactic acid simultaneously causes severe local pain as it destroys cell enzymes. Cancer appears as a rapidly growing external cell covering, with a core of dead cells.

ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), primarily in the form of lactic acid and glycolic acid, are the most researched forms of substances for skin lightening because they have a molecular size that allows them to effectively penetrate into the top layers of skin. It is generally assumed that, in and of themselves, AHAs at concentrations of 4% to 15% are not effective for inhibiting melanin production. Yet because they improve the appearance and function of skin's outer layer, skin tone and color can show overall improvement. |
| Spas and aestheticians can perform peels with up to 40% AHA (typically glycolic ot lactic acid); salicylic acid peels are not available as nonmedical treatments. Most in-office peels involve concenttations ranging from 20% to 30%, and are administered as a series of treatments spaced six weeks apart. |

The concentration of caries-promoting bacteria and lactic acid were also reduced (Yamamoto et al, 1997). An extract of oolong tea (semifermented tea leaves of Camellia sinensis) containing polymerized polyphenols in 0.2% ethanol was administered to 35 volunteers between 18 and 29 years of age to test the inhibitory effect of the extract on dental plaque deposition. The study was repeated 1 week after the first trial using 0.2% ethanol without the tea extract. The oolong tea cohort showed significant inhibition of plaque deposition (Ooshima, 1994). |

To continue their work with less oxygen, the heart cells begin to ferment glucose to produce energy, but this (anaerobic) process produces lactic acid, which subsequently acidifies the muscle tissues.
To further maintain its pumping action, the heart employs an additional emergency tool to obtain energy; it mobilizes and breaks down fats. Yet, without using oxygen in the process, these fats turn into harmful, cell-destroying acids. Proteins are then used to provide energy but the byproducts of this process are harmful fatty acids. |

Practitioners often focus on breaking up lactic acid and calcium crystals accumulated around any of the 7,200 nerve endings in each foot. By applying gentle but precise pressure to these reflex points, reflexologists can release blockages that inhibit energy flow and cause pain and disease. This pressure is believed to affect internal organs and glands by stimulating the parts of the body associated with the reflex points. Typically, practitioners use their thumbs to press on the various zones, or areas of the feet, that correspond to organs or other structural components of the body. |
