Still, for consumers who are buying a product labeled as "organic," I agree that such products should be honestly labeled, and if the USDA refuses to enforce commonsense organic requirements, then it is up to consumers to be the ultimate judge of a corporation's actions and to punish those corporations that dishonestly label their products.
Support the Organic Consumers Association and the Cornucopia Institute! Boycott Aurora's "organic" milk from Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway, Wild Oats and other retailers. |
| The lawsuits allege that Aurora Organic Dairy Corporation, which supplies organic milk to Wal-Mart, Wild Oats, Target, Costco, Safeway, and other retailers, is engaged in "consumer fraud, negligence, and unjust enrichment" by failing to adhere to USDA organic standards even while selling its milk under the organic label.
Federal investigators have already found Aurora in violation of organic standards, according to the Cornucopia Institute, and the USDA has warned Aurora over multiple "willful" violations of organic standards. |

By that definition, anything derived from plants, animals or elements found on planet Earth could earn the "all natural" label. The key is in understanding that it's the process that's unnatural, not the source. When you chemically or structurally alter food ingredients into a form that no longer appears anywhere in nature, it's no longer natural, folks. Regardless of what the food manufacturers claim.
So don't believe food claims -- even from natural product manufacturers -- that state they are "all natural" unless you also verify what's on the ingredients label. |

PepsiCo's Tropicana Pure brand, however, fared poorly, earning a very low rating and condemnation for its "deceptive" photograph on the front label that fails to accurately depict what's really in the bottle.

| Some products made primarily with apple juice show no apples at all on the front label, instead depicting pomegranates and blueberries while claiming "100% Juice!" in big letters. "This misleads consumers into thinking these products are one hundred percent pomegranate juice," explained Adams, "When in fact, they may only be five or ten percent pomegranate juice."
Some pomegranate juice products were found to be made with high fructose corn syrup or sugar. These were blended with water, then color enhanced with purple carrot extract to make them appear like more substantial juice products. |

His operation was ultimately destroyed by two things: 1) The big business domination of the mac nut industry and the economic destruction of the small farmer (the big mac nut processors on the island simply stopped buying mac nuts from local farmers, since they could buy cheaper mac nuts from Australia and label them "Hawaiian"), and 2) The massive meth problem on the Big Island, which lead to repeated property theft from his mac nut farm. Meth heads actually stole his farm equipment and tools, and the local cops seemed remarkably uninterested in solving the case. |
| There are many issues contributing to this coming collapse of Hawaii's mac nut industry, but one of the worst is the fact that macadamia nut processors physically located in Hawaii can import macadamia nuts from other countries (most notably Australia) but label them as 100 percent Hawaiian macadamia nuts. It is not illegal to do so, even though it is deceptive to consumers.
As the Dallas Business Journal reports, "Sources in the macadamia nut industry on the Big Island say that some companies, notably Hershey-owned Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp. |

The FDA is already on record stating that irradiated foods should not be truthfully labeled as such since the label might "confuse" and "misinform" consumers (who are apparently too stupid to understand what irradiation really means, the FDA believes). Now, with the USDA backing this fraudulent labeling decision by the Almond Board of California, we have two dominant government agencies (the FDA and USDA) who are both in favor of the blatant mislabeling of food products in order to keep consumers ignorant of how their foods are really being processed and degraded. |

This USDA decision, along with FDA's long-standing refusal to label genetically engineered food, and its recent decision to attempt to label irradiated foods as "pasteurized," is a conscious effort by the Administration to leave consumers in the dark about the dangers lurking in their food." - Andrew Kimbrell, the Director of the Center for Food Safety

It's not the same as admitting, "Aquafina comes from tap water," which would be a far more honest way to label the product. But PepsiCo seems to have no interest in advertising the source of their Aquafina product, and my guess is that the "public water source" text on the label will be really small and difficult to read. It's much like the labeling of side effects of prescription drugs: They bury the bad news somewhere that most consumers won't ever look.
Aquafina is currently the top-selling bottled water brand in the United States. |

Food label Secrets
Use food nutrition labels to stay linked and balanced. One carbohydrate serving is 15 grams and will need to link with at least 7 grams protein. Or two carbohydrate servings is 30 grams and will need to link with at least 14 grams protein. Or, keep this simple label formula in mind:
Maximum total carbohydrates of 30 grams links and balances with a minimum protein of 14 grams.
Let's practice link-and-balance label reading. Go to your refrigerator or pantry and take out about four of your favorite foods with labels. Let's read the labels together. |

This process helps prolong shelf life but simultaneously creates trans fats, which only have to be disclosed on the label if the food contains more than 0.5 grams per serving. To avoid listing trans fats, or to claim "trans fat free" on their label, food manufacturers simply adjust the serving size until the trans fat content falls under 0.5 grams per serving. This is how you get modern food labels with serving sizes that essentially equate to a single bite of food. Not exactly a "serving" of food, is it? |

The word "nature" or "organic" appears huge on the label. With a truly organic personal hair product, there's no distinction on the label to a consumer. The consumer doesn't know. It's just ruining the organic labeling program for personal care.
Mike: So what you are hoping to see, then, is an organic labeling law or regulation in the personal care products industry that's similar to the food industry?
Bronner: Exactly. Superficially, everyone says that's what they want, but in practice they're saying, "Here, we'll just do this branding. |

And as long as they state the trans fat content on the nutrition facts label, the truth is that their use of this ingredient is entirely legal (even if it is unquestionably unethical).
This trans fat labeling requirement by the FDA is really a food warning label. It warns consumers that the food contained inside the box is truly bad for them and may, in fact, accelerate and promote the onset of degenerative disease. Despite these impurities, many of these products were nevertheless labeled as "organic" or "natural" because the government does not regulate personal-care-product labeling, and a product need only contain one or two botanical extracts to acquire the "natural" or "organic" label. The FDA has reviewed the safety of only 11 percent of the 10,500 ingredients being used in personal-care products today. Which means the onus is on you to do your own screening. |

That's a completely fictitious label; it's been made up, and it's been placed upon them. But the trick is that by placing these labels upon these children, the drug companies know that when those children grow up, they identify themselves with those diseases, and they readily accept the idea of taking more prescription drugs as long as the doctors put more labels on them. So as they grow up, they'll find more labels, being told, "You have a syndrome X, you need this drug" or "You have high blood pressure and that's a disease, so you need this drug to lower your blood pressure. |

So don't believe food claims -- even from natural product manufacturers -- that state they are "all natural" unless you also verify what's on the ingredients label. And if it has yeast extract, or autolyzed yeast extract, or hydrolyzed vegetable protein or any of these other ingredients that actually harbor MSG, then it is, in my opinion, a deceptively positioned product, because it claims to be natural but in fact uses highly potent refined extracts that don't occur anywhere near that concentration in nature. |

The only way to know for sure is to check the nutrition information label. Look toward the bottom of the label, where it lists the percentage Daily Value of various vitamins and minerals. I rolled up my sleeves and read labels in my supermarket; in the box below, I list the soy products with more than 10 percent of the daily value for calcium.

Find a company that tests the product to ensure that it meets the label claim. Often products are blended to meet the potency printed on the label, yet by the time they have been made into capsules or tablets, some of the virtue has been lost. Reputable companies will test the finished product to make sure that what the label describes is actually in the bottle.
5. Buy enzymes in capsules (preferably vegetarian capsules) instead of tablets. Tableting is a harsh process for enzyme products, since they are more susceptible to heat and friction than ordinary vitamins. |

As I became aware of the discrepancy between manufacturers, I drew on my professional training and experience as a compounding pharmacist to establish criteria that would insure that any product in my shop and on my website was safe and effective.
My criterion for my private-label products was and is simple yet non-negotiable: quality and truth in labeling. This means that for my own private-labeled line, as well as other natural health product lines that I carry, I require stringent guidelines for their manufacturing process. |

Read all food labels and don't buy any products made with yeast extract (this is the mistake I made -- not reading the food label on this particular item, and subsequently getting whacked by an "MSG headache").
3. Return any food products made with MSG or yeast extract. Take them back and demand a refund. This will get the retailers paying attention and applying pressure to Amy's Kitchen to stop shipping products with yeast extract. Make your consumer dollars count!
4. Beware of other brands that use yeast extract. |

Pain will always remain pain no matter what label we pin on it or how we choose to deny it. Whether we feel ignored or humiliated or unloved, the pain is the same and processed by the same structures. The frontal cortex gives it different labels and we act out differently, but the centers of hurt treat them the same. Isn't it strange that we use the same tranquilizer to ameliorate depression and children's bedwetting? Maybe it is all one disease with different manifestations, and when we attack the generating source with drugs, all of the manifestations disappear for a short time. |
| If the subject reacted to the wrongly labeled scent, the parts of the brain that should have lit up to cheese, for example, did not because it had a more pleasant label. In brief, we can twist perceptions and cognitions any which way, and it can override experience. We will see how important this is later on when we discuss cognitive therapy.
For true and lasting change, deep levels of the brain must change physiologically, enabling key structures within the brain to recalibrate to optimal, healthy levels. |

In response, Aventis, the company that manufactures Ketek, announced it was adding a warning to the drug's label. It's the standard response of drug companies and FDA officials to any dangerous drug: Slap a warning label on the drug and call it "safe enough." Warning labels, however, don't make drugs any safer. They only provide a justification for the continued promotion of drugs that even some of the FDA's own scientists believe should be withdrawn from the marketplace.
“It’s no surprise to learn that the F.D.A. didn’t listen to Dr. Graham on the dangers of Ketek,” said Sen. |
