Tori Hudson, N.D. See book keywords and concepts | Another study looked at krill oil and its effectiveness at reducing symptoms of PMS. krill oil is derived from plankton and is high in omega-3 fatty acids, bioflavonoids, and vitamins E and A. This study looked at two 1-gram capsules of krill oil versus fish oil in the management of PMS symptoms and found it to be comparable at decreasing swelling, bloating, and weight gain and superior to fish oil in decreasing analgesic use, breast tenderness, joint pain, dysmenorrhea, and emotional symptoms after 45 to 90 days of treatment. | Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | PMS study.
A third group received fish oil. (And a fourth group received a placebo.)
The researchers concluded that krill oil was effective for the management of hyperlipidemia by "significantly reducing total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, and increasing HDL levels." (Note the part about increasing HDL, the "good" cholesterol levels, which is not easy to do. Drugs fail miserably at it.) The researchers stated that "at lower and equal doses, krill oil was significantly more effective than fish oil for the reduction of glucose, triglycerides, and LDL levels. | | Neptune krill oil is a very high-quality source of omega-3 fats and has been found in research to significantly reduce PMS symptoms when you take 3 g a day. Considering all the other benefits of omega-3s, there's no way this isn't worth a try. The single downside: Neptune krill oil is expensive.
Other Helpful Nutrients
The herb chasteberry (vitex) has been used for more than 2,500 years in Egypt, Greece, and Rome for a variety of conditions, not the least of which was decreasing libido (making it popular among celibate clergy but kind of a drag for the rest of those folks). | Tori Hudson, N.D. See book keywords and concepts | Another, more recent study looked at supplementation with krill oil in decreasing menstrual symptoms, including cramps compared to standard fish oil, and found the krill oil to be superior in decreasing the severity of dysmenorrhea as evidenced by a decreased use of analgesics.19
Fish Oils
1,080 mg EPA and 720 mg DHA per day Evening Primrose Oil (EPO)
500-1,000 mg up to 3 times per day
Melatonin. I have no personal experience prescribing melatonin for menstrual cramps, but I think it has potential based on some of its known biochemical effects. | | This study looked at two 1-gram capsules of krill oil versus fish oil in the management of PMS symptoms and found it to be comparable at decreasing swelling, bloating, and weight gain and superior to fish oil in decreasing analgesic use, breast tenderness, joint pain, dysmenorrhea, and emotional symptoms after 45 to 90 days of treatment.50
Evening Primrose Oil
3-4 g per day Krill Oil
2 g per day
Magnesium. Magnesium has shown some beneficial effect in the treatment of PMS. | Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | You'd expect omega-3s in general to have a good effect because of their anti-inflammatory action, but possibly other components in the krill oil work synergistically with the omega-3s.

Use as directed on label or as instructed by a health practitioner. | | Krill oil, for example—a "pure cure" for PMS—works even better if you reduce stress, caffeine, sugar, and junk food at the same time.
These are treatments that address the whole person, not just the disease.

Natural Healing: A Hard Sell That's Worth It
For most of my career, I've been advising people—first in private practice, then in books, lectures, CDs, workshops, and the like—on weight loss. And, as you may know from your own personal experience, weight loss is an uphill battle for most people. | | For example: the Combo Cure for PMS (magnesium, B6, and evening primrose oil) goes quite well with the Pure Cure for PMS: krill oil.
Food Cures are simply foods that have medicinal or curative powers on their own. An example: celery for blood pressure. As before, they can be used alone or in combination. (In this case, celery for blood pressure goes very nicely with the Combo Cure for hypertension on page 150.)
Natural Treatments: This category is for actual healing modalities as opposed to specific supplements. | Jonny Bowden, M.A., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | Neptune Krill Oil
Neptune krill oil (NKO) is a relatively new supplement that shows tremendous promise in the treatment of PMS. It's basically a fish oil, a low-temperature extract of the abundant Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). Reportedly, it has an ORAC value (antioxidant rating) of 378—more than three hundred times that of vitamins A and E and forty-eight times greater than most fish oils. A recent study evaluated the effectiveness of NKO for the management of PMS in an outpatient clinic. In seventy patients, a significant improvement was found after three menstrual cycles. | Mike Adams See book keywords and concepts | They are:

I take all of these daily except for the cleansing products which are only used a few times each year. (See chapter 6 for specific companies and contact details. | Jonny Bowden, M.A., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | B complex omega-3s GLA magnesium

I put the majority of my clients on B vitamins. | | You could also opt for cod liver oil, an amazing source of EPA and DHA, but if you live where there's a lot of sun in the summer, you might want to choose cocktail" I recommend in my practice with great success: GLA, magnesium, B6, and neptune krill oil. Since cravings and carb binges are often part of PMS, improving PMS symptoms becomes a big part of successful weight loss for most women. With the PMS cocktail, you should see results within three menstrual cycles.
The usual sources for GLA are evening primrose oil and borage oil, but I much prefer that you get the actual pure GLA supplement. |
