| The Limbic System
According to Machado, "acts of intelligence" are instigated by the limbic system, a set of structures located beneath the cerebral cortex in the deeper or more primitive midbrain area (see Figure 15.2). Scientists believe that the limbic system governs emotion, as well as such basic drives as aggression, hunger, sex, and parental instinct.
The limbic system also acts as a high-speed processor of sensory impressions. |
| An Explosive Leap
The incredible flexibility of chaotic attractors has led some researchers over the years to speculate that intelligence may find its basis in the mathematics of Chaos Theory. The Necker cube allows us to derive only two different pictures from the same image, but a mind powered by chaotic attrac-tors could draw an infinite number of "ingenious" conclusions from a single set of data.

 Neuropsychological testing is a way to assess objectively an individual's higher-order brain functions: intelligence, memory, and ability to concentrate. It can relieve the patient of fears that he or she has a progressive brain disease like Alzheimer's. Importantly, patients with brain fog rarely have problems with intelligence and with the ability to memorize; in contrast, these are the major issues in Alzheimer's.
So neuropsychological testing is a useful tool to assess the complaint of brain fog. |

 Having a sense of humor is a sign of intelligence. Telling a joke, like being a teacher, is another way to challenge your brain. You have to be able to play mental hopscotch from one word to another to make sure that the story, joke, riddle, or pun combines a set of expected circumstances and unexpected ones (in other words, what happens once the guy walks into the bar?). And ultimately, if you tell it right, you have to have a fair amount of social intelligence as well-the ability to maximize the tension and mystery of the joke until the very last second.
