Our hard-wired impulse to avoid pain helps protect us from injury, without the conscious brain having to waste valuable split seconds "thinking" about a response. So associated is pain with injury, and so severe the consequences of injury on the chances of survival, that we avoid pain at almost all costs.
Find Pleasure All animals are programmed to seek out pleasurable experiences, but copulation itself is not the only source of pleasure. The entire mating ritual stimulates feel-good receptors in the brain, which give rise to feelings of pleasure. |
| Avoid injury and Pain With the possible exception of teenagers wanting to get their bodies pierced in places you didn't know could be pierced, animals have an innate desire to avoid pain; that's because in most circumstances, pain equates with the potential for injury. If an animal is wounded, it becomes predator bait and its genes die with it. Our hard-wired impulse to avoid pain helps protect us from injury, without the conscious brain having to waste valuable split seconds "thinking" about a response. |

The entire mating ritual stimulates feel-good receptors in the brain, which give rise to feelings of pleasure.3 Nor is it a coincidence that these receptors live right next door to those for sex hormones. Behaviors or compounds that stimulate these pleasure centers always override the other directives. |

THE INFLAMMATION CONNECTION
Inflammation is the immune system's response to injury. It sends a repair crew to the point of injury, breaks down injured and dead tissue, kills bacteria, and makes way for the healing response. This process can happen anywhere in the body, and it has a great impact on the health of the blood vessels that feed the heart muscle—the vessels that cause heart attack when blocked by plaques, which are scab-like thickened areas that grow inside the walls of arteries.

No particular significance may be attached to the injury at the time. The onset of the resultant symptoms may be gradual, not becoming apparent until six months or more after the injury.
Chiropractors are trained to make a diagnosis and then to adjust the spine to correct the misalignment which may be causing the problem. Before making any adjustment tests are carried out to identify the faulty alignment and any existing neurological problems. Analyses may be made using X-rays and other imaging machines, and nerve impulses may be measured. |

Reduce your risk of injury. Building muscle protects your joints from injury and facilitates recovery from falls. It also helps you maintain flexibility and balance as you age.
Boost your stamina. As you grow stronger, you won't fatigue as easily. This will be especially noticeable with your general daily activities like carrying groceries or walking up stairs.
The great news about strength training is that research shows you : don't have to put in as much time as we • used to believe. |

Although there is no information as to whether a relation exists among these three factors, one guess would be that women with lower income and less education might do more physically demanding jobs that could lead to injury. Trauma of some sort is commonly reported at the outset of symptoms. The trauma can be from an injury or even following serious surgery.
As people segue from having just widespread pain to having FM, they also start looking more and more like patients with CFS. |

| Severe chest pain that occurs in patients who have had surgery recently or have been bedridden due to illness or injury may be caused by a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung). Again, get medical assistance immediately.
CONSTIPATION
The frequency of bowel movements is highly variable—from twice a day to several times a week may be normal. Any change in your usual habits deserves attention.
Usual causes: Most constipation is due to insufficient fiber and/or water in the diet.
Try to get at least 25 grams (g) of fiber daily. Start the day with a high-fiber cereal, such as oatmeal... |
| Usual causes: Musculoskeletal injury that is caused by overexertion. Working all day in the yard or pushing yourself too hard at the gym can result in a muscle pull between the ribs or in the upper chest. This may cause a dull ache or shooting pains.
If pain occurs only when you move your body in a certain way, it is probably caused by a strained muscle or inflammation in the ribs (costochondritis). The pain usually subsides in a day or two. |
| SICK ANIMALS
Dreams: Your pet, former pet or a stray has become ill or received a violent injury.
What it means: Our pets are dream symbols of ourselves. This dream often means that some part of you is suffering. People who are in abusive relationships often have this dream. It also can mean that you have been abusing your own body by neglecting your health.
What to do: If you are in an abusive relationship, seek help from the authorities and/or a mental health professional. If you are not, take stock of your lifestyle and try to find a way to improve your diet and/or get more exercise. |
| Although the method of injury may change, the body part you dream about remains the same.
What it means: You may be developing a health problem in that part of your body.
What to do: If the dream is a recurring one about a particular part of your body, ask your doctor for an exam.
EATING ROTTEN FOOD
Dreams: You eat food that is spoiled or has bugs all over it.
What it means: You may be overindulging in "junk food" or developing a problem that involves digestion.
What to do: Ask yourself if you are under excessive stress. |
| But arthritis pain and concerns about joint injury can make people reluctant to exercise.
Solution: Do stretching exercises, yoga or tai chi in a warm room or warm pool—the warmth relaxes the muscles and eases pain. Exercising in a pool also reduces the impact on the joints.
MIND OVER PAIN
Stress-reduction techniques reduce the pain caused by arthritis and allow natural remedies to work more effectively.
•Visualization is particularly helpful.
What to do: Sit quietly in a place where you will not be disturbed, and play whatever music you find most relaxing. |

To stop excessive blood loss in such a situation, the blood vessel contracts in a spasm (to limit the amount of blood that can escape), and blood platelets (tiny disc-shaped cells) bunch together to form a plug or, if the injury is severe, a blood clot. Thromboxane, a modified type of fatty acid circulating in the bloodstream, is released during blood vessel injuries and is responsible for initiating a decrease in blood flow and the release of additional blood clotting factors. |
| Chronic renal failure—the condition in which the kidneys are unable to perform their task of filtering waste out of the blood—can result from several causes, including infection, injury, diabetic complication, or cancer. However, animal-based research suggests that green tea extract improves kidney function in cases of chronic renal failure, even in the face of free radical overload. Studies of specialized kidney cells grown in the laboratory indicate that green tea retards the progression of chronic renal failure. |

Throughout life, people constantly suffer minor injuries like a fall, sudden shock, a sporting injury, muscle tissue damage, whiplash from a motor car accident. As a result the spine's alignment may be altered and may remain out of alignment, causing a 'nerve root impingement'. Symptoms may include tingling in the arms, cold fingers or hands, pains in the lower back or legs, upper arm aches, tennis elbow, more frequent colds and sore throats than usual, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing, stiff neck, headache, sinus problems—and asthma. |
| Adolescents' growing pains can be the result of musculoskeletal injury from seemingly minor falls or accidents when they were younger. Senior citizens' back or joint pain can often be helped.
Chiropractic now enjoys worldwide acceptance. It is no longer considered 'alternative', and a growing number of health insurance schemes around the world cover chiropractic in the same way as orthodox medical consultations. The chiropractor works in a close relationship with other health practitioners. |

Cancer researchers have concluded that an initial DNA injury develops into active cancer through the accumulation over time of specific DNA defects in certain target cells. The instigating free radical "hit" may have occurred many years before the cancer transformation is complete and an actual disease state is discernible. |

Writhing in pain from what Ten Rhyne diagnosed as severe colic, the sailor seemed determined to add insult to injury by piercing his own abdomen with a set of rather fearsome needles. To Ten Rhyne's utter amazement, the sailor was completely relieved by his makeshift operation, and immediately resumed his duties. |
| Why should we not call the injury to the intestines the exciting cause and the bacterium the predisposing cause? They are apparently like the seed and the soil, the father and the mother, which are both essential...

When we suffer an injury, stiffness or an ache, we instinctively rub or apply pressure to the part of the body that hurts.
Probably the oldest form of medical treatment, massage was used by ancient Chinese, Indian and Egyptian cultures to prevent and cure diseases and heal injuries. The ancient Greeks and Romans advocated massage before and after sport, instead of exercise during recuperation from illness, or as a medical treatment for such diverse conditions as melancholia, asthma, digestive problems and even sterility. |

A highly inflammatory response is understandable in relation to an accident, injury, or illness. However, many people get a highly inflammatory response to the activities of their routine day. Some of these are from overuse, like carpel-tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow; many others are simply from the emotional or physical wear and tear of ongoing demands (a form of repetitive-strain injury). Such excess inflammation irritates the lining of the arteries and the membranes of blood cells, eventually inducing cardiovascular disease or increasing the risk of cancer. |

The problem with this type of behavior is that it reduces our ability to clearly focus, hurts our productivity and relationships, and, at times, it risks serious injury.
This ADHD-like behavior has also been described as "continuous partial attention" by Linda Stone, a former executive at Apple and Microsoft. When she spoke at the Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego early in 2006, she (like the other speakers) was competing with the audience's use of e-mail, Web surfing, and text messaging. It was an eerie reflection of much of our society. |
