Farmers, under a special license, are now growing industrial hemp with the proviso that they must not produce plants that have more than 0.3% of the psychoactive ingredient. The seed, from which the protein food and oil comes, does not contain thc, only the flower does. The development and marketing of foods made from industrial hemp is still in its infancy. More healthfood stores are beginning to learn about and stock these nutritious foods. In my opinion, these products should be a regular part of our diets to ensure that our bodies are getting the best proteins and unsaturated oils.

How about the use of force by the DEA to destroy industrial hemp farms in the United States? This lucrative crop is grown legally in Canada and used to make hemp clothes, hemp rope, hemp seeds (which are rich in omega-3 oils) and all sorts of goods that we import from Canada, but here in the U.S., the growing of this industrial crop is condemned, disrupted and aggressively attacked by a government group that, at times, acts like a group of terrorists: The Drug Enforcement Agency. What are they doing that qualifies them as terrorists?

While the development of a hemp industry is severely restricted in the United States, today industrial hemp is cultivated in many countries, among them Canada, China, Russia, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, England, and Poland. "So what are the benefits of hemp?" you may ask. Hemp Seed When we speak of hemp as a food source, we are referring to its seed. Technically, hemp seed is a fruit, because, unlike a nut or most seeds, it contains no enzyme inhibitors. It can be eaten immediately and is readily digestible. Hemp seed is a nutritional powerhouse.
Together they mounted "an hysterical fear campaign of racism and misinformation" linking industrial hemp to its cousin, Cannabis, which can contain significant amounts of thc.49 This campaign was so fierce and effective that the word "hemp" became synonymous with the slang word "marijuana," and resulted in the U.S. government prohibition of 1937. The confusion over hemp versus marijuana remains to this day, especially in North America, but it is beginning to change.
Although both are related to the plant Cannabis sativa, industrial hemp, from which food products are produced, is very different. It contains minute (less than 1%) amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (thc), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The story of how this confusion came about is interesting, and in retrospect, sad and infuriating for the health of people and for the economy of North America. Prior to the U.S. Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, hemp was widely grown and used mainly for making rope, cloth, and paper. Hemp is the world's strongest and most durable soft natural fiber.
The development and marketing of foods made from industrial hemp is still in its infancy. More healthfood stores are beginning to learn about and stock these nutritious foods. In my opinion, these products should be a regular part of our diets to ensure that our bodies are getting the best proteins and unsaturated oils. Raw hemp seed supplies both. It has a delicious nutty flavor and can be eaten plain or sprinkled on salads and other foods. Hemp oil can be mixed into smoothies or taken right from the spoon. It has a green color and a pleasant taste.

There's so little THC in industrial hemp (that's the active ingredient in marijuana) that you'd have to smoke something like 100 pounds of hemp just to feel any high at all. That's a whole lot of burning rope. Now, maybe some of these guys from the CRA are familiar with the hemp industry, because it does sound to me like they have been smoking weed. But, alas, I gave them my promise that I would look at whatever information they would provide with an open mind.

Our national "War on Drugs" is quite selective in its targets, don't you think? industrial hemp is outlawed, but doping up millions of children on powerful narcotics is perfectly legal: it's called Ritalin. So remember, we're the only species stupid enough to actually poison ourselves. And if we don't do it in just one or two ways, we do it in half a dozen different ways! Then we regulate that poisoning, we make it federal law! And we have lobbyists and groups out there defending this use of poison in the food supply, and defending the use of it in cosmetic products and personal care products.

An honest reassessment of both medical marijuana and industrial hemp is long overdue. Smoking marijuana can be a problematic drug habit also, and like other substances, we need to find that healthy and non-dependent relationship. When it's used daily to feel high instead of dealing with emotions and life, it can be destructive. Overall, we can generally say that the least drugs we use, the better. Again, if you have an active drug problem, stopping totally can be dangerous. You may need a slower transition or guidance and support.

That year I formed the Business Alliance for Commerce in Hemp, or BACH, with a five year plan to advance these goals: restore industrial hemp in manufacture, allow prescription medical marijuana, and regulate the production and sale of cannabis for adult use. This project coincided with a grassroots revival of a global cannabis reform movement, to the seeming dismay of both the drug legalizers, who had avoided discussing industrial hemp for years, and hemp industries who had sought to distance themselves from the marijuana debate.

The last several years have rapidly transformed the concept of a modern industrial hemp industry from fantasy to reality. The physical presence of hemp clothing, paper, building materials, and seed-oil products has made a huge impact on our collective imagination—perhaps even more so than information about the importance of hemp in the past that was the seed of hemp's reemergence. Since the 1930s there has been an effort to indoctrinate people with the belief that hemp is nothing more than a "devil weed with roots in hell.
Old-time hemp farmers and their children are still around to attest to the existence—and the value—of industrial hemp. The resurgence of marijuana use in the late 1960s and the 1970s sparked a deluge of research on all aspects of the hemp plant. The history Hemp twine, unchanged for millenia. Still, the contention rises that continuing to link the issues slows progress toward restoring industrial hemp. Most hemp activists' overwhelming interest is in ecological issues, and they're tired of being accused of advancing hemp simply so they can "get stoned." With the United States in such urgent need of drug-law reform, however, it is difficult not to speak out about the injustice of marijuana laws, particularly in light of the mounting evidence for industrial-conspiracy theories along with information about marijuana's role in medicine and spirituality.
Nevertheless, the coalition for industrial hemp is getting stronger every day, encompassing farmers, financiers, and multinational industrialists, as well as enthusiastic young entrepreneurs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture developed hybrid seed lines in the early 1900s that, by their reports, produce greater yields than hemp grown anywhere else. It is only a matter of time before the U.S. also will take advantage of hemp, once described by the framers of the U.S. Constitution, Gouverneur Morris and Thomas Jefferson, as being "of first necessity ...

However, the holistic public relations approach has actually benefitted both groups. Since then, the market has expanded to include a wide assortment of quality products being commercially produced by scores of large and small, independent companies, and a research patch has been grown in southern California.
What they do not understand is that the legalization of industrial hemp cultivation will do us little good unless we quickly develop the technology to harvest and process the bounty. England grew 1500 acres of hemp in 1993. Some of this rotted in the field because there was no way to quickly harvest the crop during their cold, damp autumn. Luckily, we have a basis to start. Schlichten and the other inventors patented their ideas. As part of each patent application the inventor submits a set of drawings to illustrate the innovation.
