However, researchers at Iowa State University soon succeeded in increasing memory retention in test subjects by 26 percent and speed of learning by 24 percent using 60-beat-per-minute Baroque music.25
Popularized in the United States by the 1979 bestseller Superlearning, by Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder, Suggestopedic courses are offered today by licensees throughout the United States. Several vendors market tapes of Baroque music specially chosen to conform to Lozanov's standards. A reliable supplier is Superlearning, Inc., in New York City (tel: 212-279-8450). |
| From the time your child is old enough to understand, emphasize to him the benefits of swimming underwater and increasing the time during which he can hold his breath. I recommend Bonnie Pruden's program of physical activities for children, which includes such early swimming.28
EARLY CHILDHOOD STIMULATION
As previously discussed, it is during the early childhood years from 2 to 5 that your child's brain grows up to 90 percent of its adult weight. It is also during this period that your child's IQ will solidify at a particular level. |
| The Gravity Position
Gravity is nearly as effective as C02 in increasing blood flow. I recommend that every reader try the Gravity Position while practicing your 10- to 15-minute daily quota of Image Streaming.
Lie flat on your back on the floor, with no pillow. Rest your feet and lower legs over the seat of a chair or sofa. Make sure your legs are supported up to the knee so you don't stress them, but not so high on the knee as to impede circulation (see Figure 11.1). Loosen any tight clothes. Once you've settled in and are comfortable, luxuriate in several deep sighs. |
| You can arrest and even reverse this process by increasing your cerebral blood flow. As more blood flows into the brain, an equal amount flows out through the veins. This increased drainage has the added benefit of washing away toxins and wastes that interfere with brain function.
Masking
In general, the carotid arteries tend to overreact. They admit far more extra blood than is needed to compensate for tiny increases in C02. For this reason, Dr. Doman suggested, an effective method for oxygenating the brain may be to induce small increases in the C02 content of our blood. One technique Dr. |
| In addition to increasing IQ, the Image Streaming technique was found to induce a more balanced learning style in users as measured through a standard test called the Kolb Learning Style Inventory which was administered to students before and after taking Reinert's physics course.
The Kolb test determines the degree to which a person relies on four different styles of learning: concrete experience, abstract conceptualization, reflective observation, and active experimentation. Ideally, a person should balance all four styles. |
| You learned in Chapter 3 to open the pathways to your Image Stream by increasing your neurological contact with the imagery. Likewise, all our experience on the frontiers of accelerated learning suggests that the best way to learn is to increase neurological contact with the target subject. In pursuing this goal, you will find few methods to be more potent than the ever-growing snowball effect of Socratic self-expression.

European policies translate into money: $13 million (€10 million) for a feasibility study of a clean coal, carbon-sequestration project, with technology provided by the EU; $35 million (€30 million) for aid to big industries, like cement and aluminum, for increasing energy efficiency; and $500 million (€430 million) provided by member states — Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden are the biggest contributors—to sixty-five different projects aimed at increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. |

Increasingly, adult-onset diabetes is becoming a misnomer: skyrocketing rates of childhood obesity are leading to increasing numbers of children who have Type 2 diabetes.)
Some researchers believe that Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease—the body's natural defense system incorrectly identifies certain cells as outside invaders and sets out to destroy them. In the case of Type 1 diabetes, the cells that fall victim to this biological friendly fire are the precise cells in the pancreas responsible for insulin production. |

It also improves brain functioning by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain, helping to create new nerve cells and increasing chemicals in the brain that help cognition. Studies indicate that exercise is as effective in battling depression as anti-depressive medication.
You don't have to be a marathon runner to enjoy the cathartic benefits of physical exercise. Perhaps you are enduring chemotherapy or have orthopedic, neurological, viral, or other conditions that create major mobility and flexibility issues. |

Also, if you're eating lots of margarine and food fried in corn oil, you're increasing the inflammation in your body. Modern diets tend to be quite high in the omega-6 fats and very low in omega-3 s. (Olive and macadamia nut oils contain mostly omega-9 fatty acids that don't affect inflammation at all.)
Real, unprocessed, wild-caught or grass-grazed food from nature, fatty or not, is good for your heart. Factory-farmed cattle eat grain, which causes the fats in their meat and milk to accumulate more inflammatory omega-6 fats. |
| Neither the patient nor their doctors were aware of the cause of the increasing symptoms. Rather, the person was told that "it's part of the illness," and/or was given an additional drug or two to deal with the new symptoms. My patient Kathy's case is a perfect example of what I mean.
A fifty-seven-year-old retired schoolteacher, Kathy was being treated by her internist with the thiazide diuretic, Diuril, for high blood pressure; with Fosamax for osteoporosis; and with the beta blocker, Tenormin, for heart palpitations. |

This increased the response of peripheral T lymphocytes to intestinal bacteria and enhanced an inflammatory response by increasing the secretion of suppressive cytokines and decreasing secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines."11 þ"Administration of L. rhamnosus GG to pregnant mother weeks prior to delivery and to their newborn babies through 6 months of age led to a 50% decrease in the infants' incidence of recurring atopic eczema. |

And again, cholera actually has an advantage in evolving toward virulence—as the bacteria reproduces ruthlessly, causing more and more diarrhea, the infected person may excrete as many as a billion copies of the organism, increasing the likelihood that some bacteria finds its way to a new host.
The bottom line is this—if an infectious agent has allies (such as mosquitoes) or good delivery systems (such as unprotected water supplies), peaceful coexistence with its host becomes a lot less important. |
| If mosquitoes didn't have access to bedridden malaria patients, the microbe would be under evolutionary pressure to evolve in a way that allowed the infected person to remain mobile, increasing the opportunity for it to spread.
Of course, Ewald knows that his theory isn't always applicable.
Some parasites complicate the picture because they are capable of survival outside a host for a very long time. A pathogen that can lie in wait for years until a potential host happens upon it isn't very reliant on transmission pressure. Anthrax is one of these patient predators. |

Very likely you are increasing the viscosity of your blood at the cellular level. You're increasing its ability to carry oxygen, and to diffuse that oxygen into the organs in your body.
Theoretically, by increasing the viscosity, you are effectively halting the plaque buildup in your arteries, because there aren't groups of red blood cells floating around in your system that get stuck on the micro tears and abrasions that appear along the walls of your arteries. |

Note the part about increasing HDL, the "good" cholesterol levels, which is not easy to do. Drugs fail miserably at it.) The researchers stated that "at lower and equal doses, krill oil was significantly more effective than fish oil for the reduction of glucose, triglycerides, and LDL levels."
And right before this book went to press, a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that krill oil at a daily dose of only 300 mg "significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces arthritic symptoms thin a short treatment period of 7 to 14 days." Pretty impressive. |

There is also increasing evidence that past infection with T. gondii (toxoplasmosis) may trigger schizophrenia in some people. E. Fuller Torrey, a renowned psychiatrist and schizophrenia researcher, publicized many of these theories in 2003. It seems clear that there is a higher incidence of T. gondii infections in schizophrenics—although it isn't yet clear what causes what.
T. gondii may be a schizophrenia trigger, but it's also possible that people with schizophrenia are more likely to engage in behavior that exposes them to T. gondii, like poor hygiene. |

I will work with pharmaceutical companies to develop a drug to right the imbalance, either by blocking the action of the sleep-disturbing cytokines or by increasing the release of the sleep-producing cytokines. But, obviously, all this will take time.
I also gave some thought to the fact that nearly every study on immune function had looked within blood. That left out a whole range of other possibilities. One of the first studies I ever did showed that patients with fatiguing illness—produced by CFS or MS—also had cognitive problems. |
| Do this for 1 minute at first, gradually increasing over time to 2 minutes. Then over the next several weeks, pick up the speed at which you do these exercises until you can do one cycle of spine extension and flexion in one second. Feel free to extend the duration of this exercise to up to 5 minutes. Should you feel light-headed, stop momentarily and then continue. Relax for 1 to 2 minutes when finished.

| The next step is to tip up the end of the energy envelope over time, gently increasing your daily activity. And this really works even for those people who feel they can do little beyond what they absolutely must to get through the day. When someone comes to my office and tells me he or she is walking regularly, I don't change the regimen but simply help manage and expand the current ones. Every patient in my practice who has conscientiously tried my regimen (or his or her own with my input) has felt better. That's 100 percent! |
| When you achieve this goal, we can talk about increasing, or tipping up the end of, your energy envelope via a walking program that starts with a low energy expenditure and slowly raises your energy level.
If you've evaluated your energy envelope and find that you have more than 1,000 steps of energy available to you, you might be able to gauge your in and out energy levels all by yourself. But it's easier if you use the buddy system. |

The primary way SSRIs are thought to work is by increasing the amount of serotonin available to parts of the brain that are not receiving enough of this brain-active chemical. The success of this class of drugs in treating depression supports the underlying assumption responsible for their existence: that a lack of serotonin produces the symptoms of depression. However, brain-active chemicals besides serotonin can also affect mood. Altering levels of a different neurotransmitter called norepinephrine (also called noradrenaline) can also alter mood. |

For example, restricting calories has been credited with increasing longevity, fasting has been credited with reversing disease, and eating raw food is associated with disease prevention (see appendix C). The fact is, though, most people will simply not follow the diet deemed "ideal." So let's discuss the nearly ideal diet.
The nearly ideal diet is a compromise, a combination of raw food, optimal calorie intake, occasional fasting, and digestive enzyme supplements. The key is making healthy decisions and choices. |

Men tend to have higher levels than women, and both sexes tend to show increasing hvels as they age. þSmoking is associated with higher levels. þHigher coffee consumption is associated with higher homocysteine levels. þAlcoholics have highly elevated homocysteine concentrations. Wine and hard liquor have been shown to raise concentrations—but there seems to be a loophole for beer, which seems to have no effect. Some researchers have suggested that the folate (folic acid) and B6 in beer might help counteract the homocysteine-raising effects of the alcohol.

| Alcohol: Consuming moderate amounts of alcohol, especially with meals, may reduce heart disease risk by increasing HDL levels and helping to move cholesterol deposits out of cells lining the artery walls.
7. Aerobic exercise: At least 30 minutes a day several days a week is the exercise prescription for raising HDL.
8. Smoking cessation: Kicking the habit may increase your HDL numbers a bit, too.
9. Shedding excess pounds: Being overweight or obese contributes to low HDL levels and is listed as one of eight causes of low HDL cholesterol by the NCEP. |
