Why light bulbs are accelerating global warming and mercury contamination

I wanted to provide an eco-friendly alternative to toxic CFLs and wasteful incandescent lights. My aim is to educate consumers about the advantages of LED lights and make them so popular that even Wal-Mart starts selling them, putting my own company out of business. I will only consider EcoLEDs.com a meaningful success when LED lights are sold at mass merchandisers and incandescent lights become a thing of the past. I hope The Home Depot stops giving away toxic fluorescent lights and starts selling LED lights instead. Isn't it interesting how the U.S.

Many countries are already banning incandescent lights, and four U.S. states are considering their ban. Compact fluorescent lights will eventually be abandoned as the public learns the truth about their mercury content. Only LED lights offer energy efficiency and environmental friendliness at the same time. That's why LED lighting technology represents the future for both residential and commercial lighting. Philips says it will even stop manufacturing incandescent lights by 2016, but most consumers will have switched long before then.

And there, incandescent lights look really cheap. The $500 incandescent light bulb But what if the price of the light bulb at the store included the entire cost of the electricity needed to actually power the light bulb? If that incandescent light bulb actually lasted 50,000 hours like LED lights do, the cost of buying the bulb together with all the electricity needed to power it would be a whopping $500!. Would you pay $500 for a light bulb? Of course, incandescent lights don't last 50,000 hours. They last only about 1,000.

While the widespread consumption of fluorescent lights may save our nation from wasting electricity on incandescent lights, it may also lead to a mercury contamination catastrophe. Never before in the history of our world has so much mercury been so widely distributed across the environment. The long-term effects of this contamination are currently unknown, but they can only be negative. The only unknown concerns the degree of harm that will emerge.

First, the price issue: LED lights are, indeed, far more expensive up front than incandescent lights or fluorescent lights. Our high-end 10-watt LED light bulb, for example, currently costs just under $100. It replaces an incandescent 100-watt light bulb that typically costs around $1. So at first, the 10-watt LED light seems to be $99 more expensive. However, lights do not actually work unless they also consume electricity, and thus the real question about the cost of light bulbs must take into account the Total Cost of Ownership, or TCO.
Which brings us to the question: How much would you rather pay for 50,000 hours of light? $154 or $550? It makes obvious financial sense to pay only $154, especially when you're also protecting the environment at the same time. Why LED lights cost more up front Overall, LED lights are far less expensive to own and operate than incandescent lights. Still, many consumers are frustrated at the up-front cost. It's tough to fit a $100 light bulb into a tight budget.
Philips says it will even stop manufacturing incandescent lights by 2016, but most consumers will have switched long before then. Within a few years, only the most financially-ignorant consumers will even consider using incandescent light bulbs. Burning a light that wastes 95% of the electricity it consumes is sort of like driving a car that gets a fuel economy of one mile per gallon. No consumer in their right mind would continue to throw away their cash (and destroy the environment) when a sensible, efficient alternative is readily available.
With this in mind, consider the REAL cost of burning incandescent lights. It's not just what you waste in paying for electricity, it's also what future costs you indirectly impose upon the environment. Do you get the big picture? Understanding all this requires "big picture thinking," and sadly, the ability to see the big picture is sorely lacking among many consumers, businesses and lawmakers. Americans seem to be primarily focused on the short-term picture: How much can I save right now?

They represent a new era in environmentally friendly lighting, and they make incandescent lights and fluorescent lights virtually obsolete." Currently, about twenty percent of the electricity used in the United States is used to power lights. About ninety percent of that electricity is wasted by the extremely inefficient lighting technology still used today in homes, businesses and schools across the country.

You'll learn about the massive mercury threat posed by compact fluorescent lights, the extreme waste of energy from incandescent lights, and why LED lighting is the future for both residential and commercial lighting. I'll also be conducting in-depth scientific reviews of the ACTUAL energy usage of various light bulbs using a watt meter, a professional light meter and a remote temperature sensor. Each bulb will be shown with its associated CO2 emissions and landfill statistics, as well as any possible harm to the environment caused by the use of hazardous substances.

Alternatives to the light bulb As consumers and nations move away from highly inefficient incandescent lights, most are considering using compact fluorescent light bulbs. Yet few people truly understand the health hazards posed by the mercury found in these lights. Fluorescent lights are filled with a gas containing low-pressure mercury vapor and argon. The inner surface of the bulb is coated with a fluorescent coating made of varying blends of metallic and rare earth phosphor salts.

People know that CFLs use only about 1/3rd the electricity of incandescent lights. Of course, they flicker and hum, and they take a long time to warm up, but they do save on electricity compared to the extremely inefficient incandescent light bulb. So what's not to like about CFLs? Mercury, for one thing. All fluorescent lights contain mercury, period. It's the dirty little secret of the CFL industry. This is mercury brought into your home, and if you break a fluorescent light in your home, you are releasing a powerful neurotoxic heavy metal in your home!
LED lights are sold at mass merchandisers and incandescent lights become a thing of the past. I hope The Home Depot stops giving away toxic fluorescent lights and starts selling LED lights instead. Isn't it interesting how the U.S. government requires Energy Saver statistics to be printed on washing machines, dryers and other household appliances, but NOT on incandescent light bulbs (which are, by any measure, the least efficient household appliances of all)?

Defenders of CFLs claim these lights are good for the environment because even though they contain toxic mercury, they use less energy than incandescent lights. And since coal-fired power plants release mercury into the atmosphere, the use of less energy means less overall mercury is being introduced to the environment. While this sounds sensible at first, it's still junk logic: How does harming the planet slightly less than before deserve a "green" claim of any kind?

One of the most eco-friendly options is LED light bulbs which are not only mercury free, they're also 300% more energy efficient than fluorescent lights (and about 1000% more efficient than incandescent lights). Unlike incandescent light bulbs, which light up regardless of the electrical polarity, LEDs will only light with positive electrical polarity. LEDs produce more light per watt than do incandescent bulbs, and have an extremely long life span (usually about 50,000 hours).

This raised the question could there be a connection between the high red content of ordinary incandescent lights and the high frequency of coronary disorders. No one followed up on this information. In a study of fish breeding, fish hatched under pink light were almost all females. Rats born under full spectrum ultraviolet light had a high survival rate, whereas, those under pink fluorescent light had only 61% survivors. Mice left under a pink fluorescent light for 6 months developed rotting of their tails, which fell off.
