Compact fluorescent light bulbs contaminate the environment with 30,000 pounds of mercury each year

LEDs mostly fail by dimming over time, rather than with the abrupt burnout of incandescent bulbs. One great advantage about LEDs is that they are difficult to damage with external shock. Fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, on the other hand, are easily broken if dropped on the ground. LED lights contain absolutely no mercury or toxic chemicals, and conventional LEDs are made from a variety of inorganic semiconductor materials. They don't generate RF wavelengths that cause radio interference, or emit ultraviolet (UV) light -- so LEDs will not readily attract bugs and other insects.

There is a growing worldwide move to ban incandescent bulbs in such diverse places as Cuba (May '06), Venezuela (Nov '06), Australia (Feb '07) and Ontario, Canada (Feb '07). Five U.S. states, including California, are also considering legislation to ban incandescent bulbs. One section from the website sums up the ambition behind this project: "Let's just hope that more politicians start to mention how they intend to decide which light bulbs should be banned (and by when!
According to the website, their goal is to ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by specific dates, starting with 60W and 100W incandescent bulbs. The organization promotes energy efficiency and conservation by explaining the benefits of greater energy efficiency while encouraging the adoption of available technologies. It also supports a higher tax on incandescent light bulbs to make fluorescent lights more cost competitive. The EU has recently announced its intention to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020.

LEDs produce more light per watt than do incandescent bulbs, and have an extremely long life span (usually about 50,000 hours). One manufacturer has calculated the ETTF (Estimated Time To Failure) for their LEDs to be between 100,000 and 1,000,000 hours, mostly depending on the operating temperature (the cooler the environment, the longer LEDs last). Fluorescent tubes, in contrast, are typically rated at about 10,000 hours, but in practical application, they only last about 2,000 - 3,000 hours. Incandescent light bulbs typically burn out every 1,000 hours.

LED lights contain absolutely no mercury or toxic chemicals, and conventional LEDs are made from a variety of inorganic semiconductor materials. For these reasons (very high energy efficient and the absence of toxic materials), I launched www.EcoLEDs.

Energy saving is an essential part of the EU's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions, but 80 percent of home lighting today uses highly inefficient incandescent bulbs that convert only five percent of the energy they consume into light. This month, "at an EU conference hosted by Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, the European Union's leaders announced their intention to ban incandescent light bulbs, for the 490 million people living within the EU's 27 countries, by 2010," according to the website.
California, are also considering legislation to ban incandescent bulbs. One section from the website sums up the ambition behind this project: "Let's just hope that more politicians start to mention how they intend to decide which light bulbs should be banned (and by when!
CFLs are responsibly recycled, how they are going to help the poor to change their lighting, whether any heavily-taxed incandescent bulbs are going to remain available for specialist purposes, which other wasteful technologies they would like to get banned and/or which other energy-efficient technologies they would like to help get established..." Alternatives to the light bulb As consumers and nations move away from highly inefficient incandescent lights, most are considering using compact fluorescent light bulbs.

That's because LED lights will use only 1/10th the electricity of incandescent bulbs, saving you big dollars on electricity. Even our 3-watt LED light is sufficient for nighttime use where you just want to "leave the light on" around your property. All of our LED lights produce no UV radiation or IR radiation, making them perfect for use in museums, hospitals, offices or areas where UV radiation might degrade the surroundings (such as illuminating valuable artwork or photographs).

McConnell also reduced his energy consumption using basic home-efficiency techniques: installing motion-sensor switches in high-traffic areas, replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, and replacing old appliances with newer, energy-efficient models. This experiment has both reduced the house's footprint and increased its value (every dollar saved on annual utility costs increases home value by an estimated twenty dollars).

There are incandescent bulbs from Europe that are advertised as full spectrum, and although they are superior to regular incandescent bulbs, and do not pose the radiation problem of "Vitalites," to my knowledge they are not as effective simulators of natural light as the Ott light or Vitalite. There is also dichromatic green light, which, according to one source, is particularly healing for stress disorders and adrenal exhaustion (par 38 dichromatic 150-watt spot or floodlights made by both Sylvania and General Electric).

Incandescent bulbs are not acceptable or suitable for this use, says Dr. Rosenthal.) Look for a unit that delivers 2,500 to 10,000 lux (a measurement of intensity). The most effective units cost $300 to $500, which is an amount that many people with the winter blues have found to be well worth the investment, he says. It's necessary to customize the amount of light you use to your symptoms and the time of year. "If you are starting light therapy at the beginning of the winter season, just when you're having your first symptoms, 10 minutes a day may be sufficient," Dr. Rosenthal advises.

An eighteen-watt compact fluorescent gives the same light as a seventy-five watt incandescent bulb and lasts thitteen times longer Although these bulbs cost ten dollars to twenty-eight dollars, they ate about half as expensive over their lifetime as incandescent bulbs because of the greatly reduced enetgy use. Halogen bulbs also use less energy and last longer. About 15 percent of the energy used is converted to light, and they last about 2,000 hours. Best used for "spot" lights, because they give a bright white light.

Replace the fluorescent lighting at your desk with a lamp which uses incandescent bulbs, and use the natural full-spectrum light-bulbs which we described earlier. It's best to have an office with a window or skylight for true natural lighting; if you don't and can't arrange it, it's especially important to have natural—and sufficiendy bright—lighting. Stay away from the photocopier at the office as much as possible; it uses very volatile chemicals. Don't leave typewriter ink or corrector ribbons lying around open; put them in a sealed plastic bag when not in use.

No potentially irritating wood, fabrics, plastic, or rubber here, no fluorescent lights with their flicker and strong electromagnetic fields — the lighting in the rooms is from incandescent bulbs. The unit receives its own filtered water and filtered air. As in the center, each room's TV set is encased in a glass-front cabinet that blocks electromagnetic and vapor emissions. All clothing, bedding, and towels are made of cotton, silk, or linen. Artificial light lacks many segments of the natural range, and it delivers an entirely different mix of spectral ingredients. incandescent bulbs, for example, provide light primarily from the red part of the spectrum while minimizing or leaving out others. Cool-white fluorescent lamps, found in offices, factories, and schools, emphasize the yellow-green portion. Neither is a good source of ultraviolet or infrared wavelengths found in natural daylight. Artificial light is quite literally not the same as natural light. We can even see the difference.

However, some very sensitive individuals may not even tolerate full-spectrum tubes and must use the incandescent bulbs. With the use of computers so widespread in this technological age, I am concerned about the effects of sitting at a video display terminal (VDT) for eight hours; people I see in my practice who spend much of their time working at VDTs often have a variety of symptoms. I still write primarily longhand on yellow pads because I do not want excessive exposure to the electricity, noise, or other hazards of VDTs.

Deluxe incandescent bulbs produce the most flattering light. Because incandescents produce more heat, they are not as efficient as fluorescent bulbs, but they cost less. Fluorescent light provides good general room lighting as well as excellent task lighting, but before bringing them into your healthy home, consider the fact that the health effects of fluorescent lighting are still in question. Steer Lighting Rules of Thumb Keep these rules of thumb in mind when choosing lighting for your home: ¦ Every room should have good, overall background lighting with a switch right inside the door.
