If problem-solving skills are being impaired in America and Mexico, they are certainly also being impaired in society today. Maybe a little dust doesn't gum up the clockworks, but too much will. If we're busy dusting the IQ off our kids for a few dollars more and they can't apply intelligence to solving tomorrow's problems, then what's the point of having kids? It is likely that more violence will be substituted instead, thanks to the chemical dusting. |

Some new research from the University of Western Ontario tested a Mediterranean diet and exercise program on 38 people with high-normal blood pressure or prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance). They noticed a big improvement in the elasticity of subjects' carotid arteries—an increase of about 16 percent (the thicker and less elastic the arteries, the greater the load on the heart). Improving the health of blood vessels might not sound like it would have a big payoff, but boy, does it. |

Lab animals tested with GM foods had stunted growth, impaired immune systems, bleeding stomachs, abnormal and potentially precancerous cell growth in the intestines, impaired blood cell development, misshapen cell structures in the liver, pancreas, and testicles, altered gene expression and cell metabolism, liver and kidney lesions, partially atrophied livers, inflamed kidneys, less developed brains and testicles, enlarged livers, pancreases, and intestines, reduced digestive enzymes, higher blood sugar, inflamed lung tissue, increased death rates, and higher offspring mortality. |

Understanding Glucose Tolerance and Intolerance
People often talk about glucose tolerance and glucose intolerance, and it's important to understand what these terms mean. If you have been called glucose tolerant, your body can deal with large amounts of sugars and carbohydrates, at least for now. (That could change in the next few years.) If you have glucose intolerance or have been called glucose intolerant, you are actually prediabetic. |

Alcoholics are at increased risk of zinc deficiency both from impaired absorption and increased urinary losses. One-third to one-half of alcoholics have been found to have low zinc levels.
Keeping alcohol consumption to moderate levels will limit the health-depleting effects. Moderate levels are often defined as one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Drinking alcoholic beverages with food and water can also reduce some of the deleterious effects. Special supplementation may be warranted for alcoholics who do not eat enough nutrients. |

Specifically, the zinc-treated children had significantly greater improvement in scores on hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and impaired socialization scales than the children given the placebo. At the twelve-week evaluation, the improvement in the zinc group was even more pronounced.
Let's stop overmedicating our kids and start looking for the root causes of conditions like ADHD. Maybe then—with a little help from zinc and other nutrients—we can start to reduce the number of school-age children in the United States who are currently diagnosed with this disorder. |
| The researchers theorized that the deficiency probably caused impaired central nervous system reactions (specifically a chemical reaction called methylation, impairment of which is a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's). They also believe that there might be a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's, and that some individuals are actually born unable to properly absorb B12.
Keep in mind that supplementation results in less improvement for those who have had fullblown Alzheimer's symptoms for more than six months. |
| Autism, a spectrum of developmental disorders of the brain that appears in early childhood, can be mild to severe and is usually accompanied by symptoms of impaired social interaction and diminished or absent communication skills, as well as unusual behaviors. Though we don't know exactly how, neurotransmitters are undoubtedly involved. Our brains need B6 to perform some of the operations necessary to make those neurotransmitters; if we don't have enough B6, we simply can't make them.

People whose digestive functions have been impaired do not suddenly make better use of certain foods or nutrients simply because they begin to eat more of them.
Just because fish has good things in it does not mean that the body can actually absorb and make use of them. (One must, of course, ignore the mercury or other metals they absorb from the sea, lakes and rivers, or the antibiotics, coloring agents and other food additives that farmed fish are fed.) Fish has to be rich in nutrients otherwise we wouldn't have whales, dolphins and bears, or any life at all on this planet. |
| Furthermore, a University of Rochester study reported that women who took HRT suffered from impaired hearing. If all of this does not deter a woman from using HRT, a recent study from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, showed a sharply increased risk of asthma for women taking either estrogen alone or combined HRT. Arguably, none of these health problems is as significant as the 2002 revelation that HRT increases the risk of heart disease, the one disease that kills more women than any other. |
| Blood flow and lymph drainage become impaired. Blood congestion, which is characterized by thickening of the blood, prevents hormones from reaching their target places in the body in sufficient amounts and on time. Consequently, the glands go into hypersecretion (overproduction) of hormones. If the thyroid moves into a hyperactive mode, the overall metabolic rate of the body increases. The body's cells become hyperactive and demand an ever-increasing amount of nutrients. |

A deficiency of CoQIO has been described in aging and cancer and when statin cholesterol-lowering drugs are employed. [J Am Coll Nutr 20: 591-98, 2001]
For example, CoQIO levels in tissue of breast cancer patients are significantly decreased compared to surrounding tissues. |

Whenever Vata's functions in the body are impaired, the organs of elimination become overtaxed and must be relieved by passing harmful, foul waste into the skin for excretion. Once all excretory organs have been restored to normal and regeneration has been achieved, previously ugly, pimply, coarse, puffy and gross-looking skin will once again assume its natural luster and beauty. Rashes or other eruptions will fade away, and even coarsening and wrinkling of the skin will smooth out and vanish. |

Whether in the inner part of the arteries (endothelium) or in the sex organs, poor circulation and impaired blood flow show up as dysfunction—and both are helped greatly by getting your heart pumping and your tissues flooded with blood and nutrients. Plus the improved mood, outlook, and physical appearance that go with regular exercise never hurt anyone in the bedroom department. It's hard to feel sexy (and to perform) if you're feeling crummy all the time. And exercise is one of the best ways we know to feel good. |

Severe, prolonged vitamin E deficiency can cause neurological problems including impaired vision and poor muscle coordination.
Food Sources of Vitamin E
Average dietary intake of vitamin E in the United States is not enough to meet the RDAs. The average daily intake is about 14 IU (9 mg) for men and 9 IU (6 mg) for women. This is well below the RDA of 22.5 IU (15 mg) for adults. It is not easy to get sufficient vitamin E in a typical American diet without excessive fat intake.
Summary for Vitamin E
Main functions: antioxidant protection of cell membranes and LDL. |
| Iron transportation is impaired in copper deficiency.
COPPER AND NEUROTRANSMITTERS
A copper-containing enzyme converts the neurotransmitter dopamine to the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Copper-dependant enzymes are also involved in the metabolism of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is well-known for influencing mood.
COPPER AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY
One of the most powerful antioxidants in the body is superoxide dismutase (SOD). Two forms of SOD contain copper. One is copper/zinc SOD that protects red blood cells. The other is an extracellular SOD found in high amounts in the lungs. |
| A decreased response to insulin can result in impaired glucose tolerance. A more serious insulin resistance is known as type 2 diabetes. The clinical signs of type 2 diabetes include elevated blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.
Cell membranes have insulin receptors. The sensitivity of this receptor to insulin can be improved by chromium. Insulin binds to the insulin receptor in the cell membrane to activate the receptor, as seen in Figure 13-4. The activation of the insulin receptor enables glucose and chromium to enter the cell. |
| Chromium deficiency may be a contributing factor in both type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance. Heavy exercise may increase the amount of chromium needed.
Summary for Chromium
Main function: assists insulin in controlling blood sugar. Adequate Intakes: adults, 20 meg to 35 meg. Toxicity: no reports of toxicity from trivalent chromium. CM] Hexavalent chromium is highly toxic.
Tolerable upper intake level has not been set. Deficiency may interfere with the control of blood sugar. Sources: whole grain products, broccoli, green beans, grape juice, and spices. |
| To avoid impaired immune system functioning, older adults should be sure to maintain adequate zinc intake. There are some indications that adequate zinc intake may reduce the risk of macular degeneration, common in older populations.
Appendix E: Alcoholism
Alcoholics have special needs for vitamins and minerals. Alcoholics often get smaller amounts of nutrients because they consume less food. Many alcoholic beverages can be seen as "empty calories" because they supply energy without the nutrients needed to burn that energy.
Alcoholics may be more sensitive to excesses of certain nutrients. |

Cognitive and insight therapists are at a disadvantage because they don't recognize that they are dealing with an impaired brain that will not respond to ordinary reason. The traumatized brain has different cognitive capacities.
The true meaning of optimum mental health is harmony and balance. It is also the meaning of emotional-intelligence, which allows our feelings to guide us toward a sane, intelligent life, and not one filled with broken loves, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and esoteric intellectual pursuits. |

With their immune systems impaired by large amounts of these man-made, acid-forming foods and the chemical additives they contain, children barely stand a chance of fighting off the normally harmless germs that are part of our natural environment.
The situation is worsened if children haven't been breastfed long enough to build up their natural immunity. Many infants are still being fed commercial formulas, and these contain rancid (oxidized) cholesterol which results from the milk-drying process. |

The results were quite clear: those suffering from artery disease and thus impaired circulation in the brain performed less well on the tests than did those whose arteries were clean. Age made no difference. Arterial health was the variable that counted.
This should come as no surprise. Clogged arteries serving the brain and clogged arteries serving the heart are part and parcel of the same disease. The cause is the same: a buildup of fat and cholesterol and lethal damage to the delicate endothelial lining of the blood vessels. |

So long as the connection is poor and access impaired, the therapist is open to any kind of ideas that appeal to him intellectually. And what appeals to him intellectually is what is dictated by his unconscious. And that means that he might choose a therapy that operates on denial, such as the cognitive, because he operates on denial. He makes therapeutic choices that obey this dictum.
If a therapist, unconsciously, has a need for power, he is apt to dictate to the patient; it may be directions for living, relationships, choices, and, above all, insights. |
