Corrected a chemical imbalance, or something, as the Zoloft commercial had said. "Zoloft, a prescription medicine, can help. It works to correct chemical imbalances in the brain," the voiceover on the ad had intoned. Julie didn't know she had a chemical imbalance and doesn't actually know what one is, and it had never really occurred to her that she could have a mental illness (could she?), but she does hope, fervendy, that her life will become a little easier, a little less stressed, and more smoothed out—soon. |

The imbalance in the consumption of these essential fatty acids is the main reason for the imbalance in our body's production of these hormones. That is why many individuals in the industrialized world need to take flaxseed oil and fish oil in supplementation in an attempt to bring these back into balance.
Here is another unknown fact: essential fats also have the ability to actually decrease our total cholesterol levels and our LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. This means that not all fats are created equal. |

My doctor said that this could be caused by an imbalance in my brain related to epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. Of all things, my doctor decided that he should give me a free sample of Effexor, a drug that affects serotonin and norepinephrine, which are two chemicals in the brain linked to depression. Correcting the imbalance of these two chemicals is said to relieve symptoms of depression.
During my visit with the doctor, I didn't mention anything about being depressed. How did he come up with this drug as the solution? |

• Eating too many man-made carbohydrates is the number one reason for hormonal imbalances.
• Poor eating and lifestyle habits—not genetics—cause diseases of aging.
The actual eating plan depends on where you fit in a matrix of four metabolic types. What type you are depends on the operating health of two of the major hormonal systems in your body: your insulin metabolism and your adrenal metabolism. Most people reading Living the Low-Carb Life understand by now the concept of insulin resistance and the role elevated insulin levels play in weight gain. |

The concept behind the use of probiotics is that due to modern-day diets, industrialization of the food-production process, and overuse of antibiotics, many of us have developed an imbalance of the bacterial flora in our colon and intestines. It follows that this imbalance causes constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, and disturbances in digestion. The addition of probiotics is designed to reduce pathological bacteria like Clostridium difficile and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
Studies of probiotics for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders have not shown consistent results. |

Gallstone formation is thought to be due to an imbalance of bile salts and minerals, dehydration, toxins, and excess cholesterol in the bile. In addition, a high-fat, low-fiber diet and pregnancy have been associated with gallstone production. When the delicate ratio that keeps bile in liquid form is imbalanced, crystals ("stones") form from some of those bile components. They can be a real medical problem, blocking the flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder, and sometimes obstructing the pancreas and intestines as well. These situations often constitute a surgical emergency. |

It is a symptom of an underlying imbalance in the patient. Unless you treat and reverse the underlying imbalances, you will never eliminate the underlying cause of the cancer. You will continue to see more tumors and complications, even if you are able to treat the first tumors.
Think of it like this: suppose you have a dam holding up a body of water such as a lake. One day, due to poor maintenance, the dam begins to crack and water starts leaking through. In the world of conventional cancer treatment, they would say the problem is the water, and they would begin treating the water. |

So how does this imbalance happen in the first place? Let's start with Candida's favorite food: sugar. Yeast thrives on sugar. Loves the stuff. Processed carbohydrates like breads and cereal are like "Miracle-Gro" for yeasty bugs.
Next, there are antibiotics, also known as Candida's best friend. Why? Because, like a powerful weed killer that also kills your roses, antibiotics kill everything, making it even easier for Candida to pop back up and overtake the farm. (Just like in your garden, it's easier for the weeds to come back than the roses. |
| Many things in the environment that we're exposed to daily—such as substances in our food or breakdown products from plastics—can act as "hormone mimics," behaving like estrogens in the body and aggravating the imbalance further. (For an excellent discussion of this phenomenon, see the book Hormone Deception: How Everyday Foods and Products Are Disturbing Your Health by D. Lindsey Berkson.)
Then there's the little matter of the fat cells, tiny hormone factories that can make matters even worse when you've got too many of them. |
| People who are given antibiotics a lot tend to have a much greater tendency to have an imbalance in their gut ecology—it's easier to grow more weeds than it is roses. Probiotics will help offset that unhealthy balance.
Probiotic supplementation is especially critical if a lot of yeast is present, and will help restore a healthy balance of microbes in the digestive tract. |

During my visit with the doctor, I didn't mention anything about being depressed. How did he come up with this drug as the solution? As discussed, physicians frequently prescribe "off label use" following their own judgment and prescribe drugs made for one condition to treat another. Since this was long before I was critical of prescription drugs, I assumed my doctor knew what he was recommending. I took one pill and immediately realized how incredibly wrong Effexor was for me. |
| Conversely, we are constantly introducing external chemicals, often through our food choices, into our bodies that trick our nervous systems and brains, creating imbalance. According to Dr. Cass:
Our brains operate optimally when they are fueled properly and often. We need to feed our bodies with high-quality complex carbohydrates for a consistent supply of blood sugar — its fuel. We need "good" fats (as in fish or flax oils) to make brain cells, and provide a healthy milieu in which to produce neurotransmitters, which are made from good quality protein (fish, fowl, meat or soy). |

For any type of thyroid imbalance, I recommend removing canola oil, safflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil and margarine, along with inorganic salt (table salt), as well as all conventionally-grown pesticide-sprayed food from the diet. Seed oils slow thyroid function. Excess inorganic sodium is positively charged, and is attracted to the negatively-charged thyroid gland and leads to dysfunctions. Pesticides and heavy metals are also attracted to the thyroid and cause endocrine imbalances. |

The right proportion and mixture of these results in health, while disease is caused by an imbalance. This theory was taken up by Galen, a Greek born about AD 130, who expanded it by adding the notion that humors, diseases, and the drugs to cure disease could also be hot or cold, and moist or dry. Blood, for instance, is hot and moist, while phlegm is cold and moist.
Galen achieved great fame as a physician, and even doctored Roman emperors, including Marcus Aurelius and his dreadful son Commodus. His main principle was curing by contraries, so that a "hot" fever called for a "cold" drug. |
