Phytolacca: Use this remedy for any acute illness that involves extremely tender, swollen glands. Areas especially affected include the glands around the jaw and the throat. When this remedy is indicated the ears are likely to feel painful when swallowing. Cool drinks will feel soothing and warm drinks uncomfortable.
HERBALISM
W
There is a long list of herbs that are beneficial in helping to reduce fever, a measure that may help with the roseola rash. Below are some herbs that show the most promise in treating fever and that are considered safe for use by children. |

Moisturize your hair: Dry hair is not a medical illness as such and is usually a symptom of another condition. It can also be a result of hot dry conditions, exposure to environmental toxins, or chemical processing. In these cases, hair conditioners and moisture packs are appropriate. Also try to avoid exposing the hair to the conditions that cause dryness. |
| Pulsatilla: This remedy is often helpful in treating the later, more established stage of this illness, once a rash has fully developed. There may be symptoms of catarrh and a dry mouth and coated tongue due to nasal congestion at night. Any mucus present is characteristically thick, bland, and greenish-yellow in color. When ill a normally placid child tends to become weepy and clingy.
TIP: DO NOT FORCE A PATIENT TO EAT
Avoid forcing food on your child if he or she is in the feverish stage of measles and does not have an appetite. |

Some herbalists feel that hair loss which occurs because of illness or emotional stress is most amenable to treatment by herbal medicines. w
Topical lotions and creams: The following herbs are used either singly or in combination to address hair loss: nettle leaf, birch leaves, burdock root, gentian tincture, lavender oil, and essential oil from the rhizomes of calamus. The use of alcohol on the scalp may increase hair loss, so it is preferable to boil these plants in water, or olive or almond oil, and then apply the mixture to the scalp. |

According to TCM theory, illness occurs when a person's inner balance is disturbed. This balance inlcudes the body's Qi (the internal energy), blood, and body fluid. Good health also involves being in harmony with nature; for example the four seasons and the elements of heat, cold, dampness, dryness, and wind. As such, a red and inflamed rash is "hot" and is treated by using cooling remedies, while a phlegmy cough is "damp" and requires herbs that dispell dampness.
TCM treatment usually involves combining herbal remedies with acupuncture and/or acupressure. |

Nail abnormalities are a symptom of several diseases and treatment usually involves treating the underlying illness. Nail condition can change for a variety of reasons. Fungal infections of the nail manifesting as thick, yellow, flaking nails are common and generally require oral antifungals once the infection is fully established. If you catch an infection in the early stages, however, tea tree oil can be an effective antifungal.
If nails are lined: Many diseases cause changes in the nail. |

The Aboriginal concept of illness is complex beyond the scope of this chapter. Suffice to say that Aborigines traditionally recognize two main categories: illnesses due to understandable causes, which are normally treated with medicinal plants or other products found in nature, and illnesses due to unknown causes. The latter are generally ascribed to sorcery and require the help and skills of the medicine man or woman, who will apply complex treatments involving magical rituals.1 This second type of illness is discussed here. |

In many cases, effects are not immediate and may show up years later as unexplained illness.
However, due to their "protected" status (for financial reasons) and despite the extremely well-documented toxicity of many of them, inert substances don't have to be listed on a product's label. Furthermore, government officials are forbidden by law from revealing the inert ingredients in pesticide products. |
| Up to 30 percent of people sensitive to chemicals are deficient in vitamin Br Vitamin Bj appears to be particularly useful in the treatment of muscle disorders, indigestion, mental illness, diabetes, depression, fatigue, excessive chemical toxicity, and failure to detoxify chemicals. Food sources include potatoes, wheat germ, nutritional yeast, cooked beans and peas, collard greens, raisins, oranges, nuts, whole grains, milk, and milk products. |
| Today we are witnessing another medical anomaly—a unique pattern of illness involving chemically exposed people who subsequently report multisystem symptoms and new-onset chemical and food intolerances. These intolerances may be the hallmark for a new disease process, just as fever is a hallmark for infection. |

| Less than 5 percent of all patients examined have had a primary psychiatric or social cause for their illness"
Added to this is evidence for further abnormalities, such as widespread immune system damage. This diversity of damage readily accounts for the other numerous and seemingly disjointed symptoms commonly accompanying CFS. This injury appears to be caused by many factors, including infection (viral, fungal, and bacterial), various different mineral and vitamin deficiencies, and allergies or sensitivities to foods, pollutants, animal products, plant products, and chemicals. |

In other words, the DSM-IV is the result of "consensus" or agreement about the mental illness diagnosis.
The psychiatric diagnosis or mental disorder labels found in the manual are not based in science insomuch as there is no citation provided in the manual about any objective, confirmable abnormality in the brain to support a single psychiatric mental disorder. Rather, subjective criteria decided on by "consensus" are provided as a kind of checklist to assist the clinician in pinpointing the alleged mental disorder. |
| The bottom line appears to be, at least according to the deep thinkers at the APA, if you use, abuse or experience withdrawal from one of the above substances, with the exception of pot or glue, you are suffering from a mental illness. What gets lost in the APA's psychobabble is not whether these substances chemically alter the mind. Illegal substances, as well as the now socially acceptable prescription psychiatric mind-altering drugs the nation swallows everyday, alter the chemicals in the brain. |
| The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theoiy of Personal Conduct, exposing the fraud of modern-day psychiatry. While it has been more than 40 years since his classic work was first published, his insight remains timely. Dr. Szasz explains the difficulty the psychiatric community faces in order to gain legitimacy within the medical community. |
| But, as it is well-documented by the personal honor stories, Prozac and the other antidepressants in the SSRI class of drugs have been prescribed "off-label" (not approved by the FDA for effectiveness and safety in a particular population) to the pediatric population for more than a decade and for an ever-increasing number of psychiatric diagnoses other than the alleged mental illness of depression. |
| He died after a psychiatrist we did not know gave him three sample bottles of a pill we had never heard of for a perceived illness that his doctor could only guess at. We were advised with great authority that Matt was suffering from a chemical imbalance that could be helped by a new, wonderful medication called Zoloft. It was safe, effective, only two minor side effects were cautioned with us—insomnia and indigestion. Now, I don't know if Matt had a chemical imbalance. He became agitated on the pills. He did not sleep. He did not eat. He could not sit still. |
| Due to an alarming number of reports of violence and self-harm in Great Britain, the British CSM beat the FDA at protecting the British citizens by conducting its own in-depth review of clinical trial data on seven of the most popular psychotropic drugs, finding that "the risk of treating depressive illness in under 18-year-olds with certain SSRIs outweigh the benefits of treatment."
There are many who believe that it was only because of the British review that the FDA finally was forced to act on numerous similar claims here in the United States. |

Cathcart told a friend, "When you get an illness, start taking vitamin C until you get to bowel tolerance." Bowel tolerance is when you reach the level of vitamin C intake where you are sitting on the toilet and you have diarrhea.
What you find is -- and Dr. Cathcart repeatedly saw this -- if you have a minor illness, you can probably take three times the vitamin C that normally would cause you to hit bowel tolerance. If you have a major illness, you might not even be able to hit that level. Dr. |

Physicians are trained to properly diagnose the illness and to prescribe the drug therapy to treat the symptoms of the illness. Physicians are not educated about wellness or about how to help patients achieve their optimal health.
Drugs do not promote health. In most cases, they only modify the symptoms of a disease process. The drugs, via blocking receptors or poisoning enzymes, often have harmful side effects that cannot be predicted in the individual.
This book was written to educate the reader about the mechanism of how the most common drugs work in the body. |

If you have a major illness, you might not even be able to hit that level. Dr. Linus Pauling showed that there is a linear response between the amount of vitamin C in a macrophage and the activity of that macrophage.
The more you get in, the more active it is, the more it is able to kill what is needed. You begin to say, "Oh yes, macrophages are really doing a major job" when you get illness. So Dr. Cathcart told this friend -- he gave him the theory -- and so the friend went off to a conference with a couple of other friends of his for a weekend, and came home and he was not feeling well. |

Wjlth rising MSG-induced asthma, migraine headaches, ADD, childhood disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and possibly even cancer, we are witnessing enormous human illness caused by this drug. Is it worth it? Can society continue to pay for it? Perhaps litigation similar to the tobacco lawsuits will start to result in payment for the enormous; costs of MSG-induced illness and death.
There are similarities to asbestos, to lead-based paints, to mercury contaminations, and even to silicone breast implants. |

One problem is that when people get sick they may change the way they eat, so the diet they report may not be the diet responsible for their illness. Another problem is that these patients will typically report eating large amounts of whatever the evil nutrient of the moment is. These people read the newspaper too; it's only natural to search for the causes of one's misfortune and, perhaps, to link one's illness to one's behavior. |

Linus Pauling, who learned that when you have an illness, when you have an immune system challenge, your body could require 100 times the vitamin C it normally does. We have seen this with AIDS patients -- they keep them alive by putting them on 100 grams of vitamin C a day.
There is a true story related by Dr. Bob Cathcart in California -- he is the doctor who took over the vitamin C world when Dr. Linus Pauling left. Dr. Cathcart told a friend, "When you get an illness, start taking vitamin C until you get to bowel tolerance. |
