The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century

The reaction so far has mostly come in the form of ballot measures to clarify and enforce entitlement distinctions between citizens and illegal immigrants. Californians have passed initiatives against the granting of driver's licenses and social services benefits to illegal immigrants and to terminate bilingual education. In 2004, voters in Arizona passed Proposition 200, requiring new voters to offer proof of citizenship and state and local governments to verify legal residency before extending "public benefits" to people who apply.

This, especially the River Grande, is carefully guarded, largely against illegal immigrants ("wetbacks"). Meanwhile, by air and sea, millions of dollars' worth of hard drugs are carefully transported north in small, valuable, illegal packets, the whole trade probably worth more than any legal import from Central or Sourh America such as coffee or crude oil. This South-North drug trade now includes a sizeable quantity of heroin, derived from opium, grown, not in Asia or the Middle East, but in Latin America.

What's in an apple? Buying organic, healthful produce becomes increasingly complicated

I believe to be a strange term, since in my opinion there's no such thing as an "illegal" human being). On one hand, U.S. consumers demand cheap produce that can only be grown and harvested with the help of illegal immigrant labor. On the other hand, Americans grumble about too many Mexicans migrating into California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, claiming they are stealing jobs and bankruptcing cities and states. And yet, not surprisingly, when most consumers have a choice between a $3 apple grown on a farm that pays legal wages to U.S.

How to survive a flu pandemic by strengthening your immune system now

Nearly 4,000 illegal immigrants cross the border from Mexico into the United States every 24 hours. If that many people enter the country in the midst of a global flu pandemic, chances are that at least one or two of them will be infected with the flu. It only takes one or two, since it will then spread from one person to the next in families and communities. It will be spread by people driving vehicles from one town to another. Soon, the whole country will be infected, even though our borders have been officially shut down. I think we no longer live in a world capable of being isolated.

This shadow economy allows nonstate groups access to a global smuggling network that handles everything from arms to illegal immigrants to drugs to knockoff products to money laundering. They have quickly learned to use this network to sustain their war with the world. The ongoing attacks in Nigeria are financed through the bunkering and export of stolen oil, and the 2004 Madrid train bombings were financed through the sale of the drug ecstasy.

Mexican immigrants in the United States out of a total of 8 million legal and illegal immigrants combined. Mexicans comprised almost a third of all 28 million Hispanic immigrants in the United States, and the proportion was increasing steadily. The Mexican immigrant population is highly concentrated, with 78 percent living in just four states, and nearly half living in California alone. The affluence created in the final decades of the cheap-oil blowout made the United States, and southern California in particular, an irresistible objective for Mexican immigration.
A state of violent anarchy may grip America's southwestern states as militias array themselves against illegal immigrants. And at some point, the immigrants could certainly arm themselves in kind. There is no shortage of small arms in the world, even among the most impoverished societies, as recent experience has shown. At what point does this border conflict turn into a de facto border war? The reconquista or Aztlan movement among Mexican nationals living in the United States cannot be dismissed as racist political paranoia, either.

Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology, and Bioterrorism

Many workers in meat and poultry processing plants are illegal immigrants with even less access than others to such benefits.16 These labor issues affect food safety because they lead to unsafe handling practices such as washing hands infrequently, staying on the job while sick, and failing to obtain treatment for intestinal infections. Education of employees would help, but education alone is not enough to ensure safe food.

Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About

The bottom line is everyone knows hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants come into America every year. Everyone knows this could be easily stopped if politicians wanted it stopped. But because of payoffs by big corporations it is allowed to happen and the politicians constantly insult us by lying about it. Politicians and government are responsible for the majority of wealth in this country because the majority of wealth has been generated through public corporations and government contracts.

Health Care Meltdown: Confronting The Myths and Fixing Our Failing System

Would the "pool" include illegal immigrants? A whole topic in itself. The short answer is "yes." These people do some of the most dangerous and difficult jobs in our society. They contribute more to our economy than they take out. And corporations that hire them often fail to provide them with health insurance, thus shifting the cost of their health care to taxpayers in general. The humanitarian answer is also "yes." Q. Is it fair that someone who doesn 't work and contribute to the trust fund gets a "free ride " ?
