CNN Health Story Promotes Pizza, ice cream, Burgers as "Great for Your Waist"

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
See article keywords and concepts
The story contained absolutely no recommendations about truly healthful foods except, perhaps, eggs. The ice cream suggestion was made without any thought whatsoever about all the diabetic readers who crucially need to avoid saturated animal fats as well as processed sugar (and those are the two main ingredients in ice cream). Contact CNN and Health Magazine using the links given above and let them know what you think about their lousy health journalism. And when you read health articles from any mainstream news source or magazine, keep your skeptical thinking cap on.
I challenge the author of this story (someone named Camille Noe Pagan) to spend her days eating burgers, ice cream, pizza and Canadian bacon, and see just how much weight she loses. Where are your super thin fitness photos, Camille? Mine are posted at www.HealthRanger.org and I got fit by avoiding all the things you're recommending! What does your waist line look like? Nutritional nonsense in the mainstream media Friends, this CNN story is just another example of nutritional nonsense appearing in the MSM.
Join other NewsTarget readers in telling Health Magazine what you think about their article that recommends people eat pizza, ice cream, burgers and processed meat to lose weight. (Maybe they should change their name to Bad Health Magazine, huh?) Here's the CNN comment box for their health section: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form1.html?13 The story in question here is posted at: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/diet.fitness/01/02/healthmag.bad.foods/index.

What I really do like, however, is their Chocolate Coated Wild ice cream & Apple Bananas. Now, before you go ape nuts crazy over how great this name sounds, please remember that there's no ice cream here. It's just part of the name of the banana species, which is called Wild ice cream & Apple Bananas because if you have a really good imagination, they sort of taste like ice cream and apples. Dip 'em in chocolate and, needless to say, they're extremely delicious. I enjoyed these so much that I went back to Empowered Foods and bought more!

CNN Health Story Promotes Pizza, ice cream, Burgers as "Great for Your Waist"

You certainly don't lose weight by eating pizza, ice cream and burgers. You do it by eating fresh produce and avoiding processed foods and animal products. The title of this article is completely nonsensical to begin with: "Bad foods that are actually great for your waist." How can foods that are bad somehow magically be great for your waist? This article implies that these junk foods will result in a reduction of your waist size. And yet any person with even an inkling of nutritional knowledge knows that the foods recommended in the article actually increase your waist size.
On January 2, 2008, CNN Health posted a story that claims pizza, burgers, Canadian bacon and ice cream are diet-friendly and good for your waist line! Did they mean it's good for watching your waist line grow to an ever-expanding size? No, they actually mean these foods are good for slimming your waist line! The article was brought to my attention by a concerned NewsTarget reader. When I first saw it on CNN's website, I thought was a hoax. But it's no hoax. Turns out it was written by Health Magazine!

The main problem with cravings arises when cravings for chocolate, sodas, sweets, and ice cream become substitutes for nutritious foods. Cravings often can also be clues about specific nutritional needs. A craving for ice cream may indicate an increased need for protein, fat, or calcium. A craving for acidic foods like pickles may be a clue to increased need for calcium or salt. A craving for sweets may indicate a need for more protein in the diet. Cravings for chips can indicate a need for more salt and fats.

Seventh Generation CEO Jeffrey Hollender and coauthor Stephen Fenichell reported in What Matters Most, their green business book, that three-quarters of the 160 McDonald's franchises in Sweden served organic ice cream. All served organic milk, and half ran on renewable energy. All newly built sites use piping made with recycled material. The McDonald's in Sweden recycled 97 percent of its solid waste.40 One McDonald's in that country sells biodiesel made from the cooking oil used for their fries. So why don't we get organic ice cream and all-natural beef at McDonald's in the United States?

Indeed, Peter Golbitz of Soyatech credits Tofutti, the first commercially successful soy ice cream substitute, as having "proved to Americans that a soybean-based food product could actually taste good."34 Calling the product "Tofutti," however, is a bit of a stretch. Indeed in the 1980s, muckraking reporters exposed the product as containing no tofu whatsoever.

Put down the ice cream, turn off the TV and go bicycling for goodness sake. No, your mommie isn't around to MAKE you do it, you have to do it all by yourself. Nutritional deficiencies The dirty-your-britches side effect isn't the only thing about Alli that makes me wonder what kind of desperate weight loss newbies are going to pop these pills: I'm also concerned about the fact that the drug interferes with the absorption of essential fatty acids.

This will make the drink have the texture and taste of ice cream, because when you're eating ice cream it's actually the fat combined with the sugars that makes it taste so good. By adding macadamia nut oil to a blended shake, you give it the taste and texture of a high fat ice cream shake without having to consume the saturated animal fats found in cows' milk and dairy products. In other words, it gives you all the taste experience of cream without the unhealthy consequences of cream. Remember that fat tastes great, so you're missing out if you take healthy oils as nutritional supplements.

Case study: fish protein in ice cream To improve the taste and texture of its lowfat ice cream, Unilever introduced GM ice-structuring protein (ISP), which lowers the temperature at which ice crystals grow. Although ISP is naturally found in an eel-like arctic fish called the ocean pout, isolating the protein from the fish is expensive. To make it affordable, the company inserted multiple copies of a fish gene into yeast DNA. After it produces ISP, the yeast is removed using mi-crofiltration.

Its presence in ice cream, however, vastly increases its exposure. A 160-pound young man in the United States who consumes a lot of ice cream would eat as much as 23 milligrams of ISP per day.44 That's certainly enough to warrant concerns about allergies. Unilever tested their protein with the stability and amino acid sequence evaluations that are used for GM crops (see part 3). They also went a step further and looked for reactions in the blood (sera) from 22 individuals known to be allergic to cod fish.
