You'd think that if you weren't eating you'd be hungry; I was not hungry. I couldn't eat; it was impossible. I just wanted to die. It was so strong and I felt so hopeless. That was my only hope of reaching her.
PC: You also had bulimia?
K: Later, I would go through periods where I would not eat and then I'd be so hungry, I'd eat a lot and I'd freak out so I'd throw up— I'd get rid of it. It just became so easy. It was so much easier than starving or exercising. If I had a test or something going on that was really stressful, I would eat and throw up and then I would eat and throw up again. |

Our brains are just hungry for connections, hungry to communicate, hungry to reach out and make new neuronal connections so that we can maintain our intelligence.
At his institute in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Khalsa offers the Brain Longevity program, which consists of four pillars:
1. Nutritional modification, including a 15 to 20 percent fat diet. Adding breast of chicken, fish, and nonanimal protein products such as tofu is helpful. Certain fish are especially good for the brain. These fish include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, and sardines.
2. Stress management. |

I can tell when I'm hungry and when I'm not hungry, and I'll catch myself eating and I'll be like, "K, you 're not hungry, you don't have to eat right now; you're upset because you just got in a fight with your dad," or whatever. But before I couldn't be in touch with that. I couldn't have been in touch with that because I wasn't thinking clearly; I was not using my knowledge. I was a victim of my feelings.

But the pot-smoking munchies are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential insight we can gain from studying cannabinoids. If we can understand how certain chemicals turn hunger signals on and off, we can understand how people can stop being hungry and lose weight.
Back to our swimming analogy, if you can train yourself to swim upstream or slow the current, you're going to have much better success in managing your waist long term. |

It's like taking a room full of a hundred hungry children, handing fifty of them a large sandwich, then declaring that sandwiches don't work as food because half the room is still hungry.
That these figures would even be quoted as something resembling "scientific medicine" is laughable. The defenders of pharmaceuticals have become so desperate to discredit antioxidants and nutrition in general that they have now resorted to quoting study results from people who didn't even take the vitamins! |

Your body is hungry because it's malnourished! And all the processed food you keep eating is devoid of real nutrition, which explains why you're still hungry even after eating an entire bag of cookies, chips, donuts or whatever.
Read my book Natural Appetite Suppressants for Safe, Effective Weight Loss to learn more about natural strategies that really work for reducing appetite and eliminating cravings, or you can start by consuming trace minerals and microalgae like spirulina, chlorella or blue-green algae.
Secondly, you've got to engage in regular exercise. |

If you get irritable when you're hungry, which is hypoglycemia, you need adrenal support. Our Adrenal Stress End is outstanding for that. Take one in the morning, maybe even one at noon, and it'll smooth your energy throughout the day and you won't feel like biting your spouse's throat out when you get hungry. It's going to make you feel a lot better. Also, for low thyroid, it's critical to know that the blood tests are horribly unreliable. If you're tired, achy, have weight gain and you're cold and intolerant, find a holistic doctor to give you a prescription to Armor Thyroid. |

Go to bed too hungry or too full. If you are hungry, a light carbohydrate snack (e.g., crackers with milk) may help.

Poor or decreased judgment
Those with dementia may dress inappropriately, or show poor judgment in various aspects of their lives that doesn't fit with previous behavior. A common warning sign that we see in our clinic is patients who give away large sums of money to telemarketers or pay for home repairs or superfluous products they don't need. |

If you're still hungry, you can always take it back out to eat at the restaurant, but chances are you won't want to. Feed the leftovers to Fido, or eat them yourself for lunch the next day. Save time, money, and your waistline!
• Downsize dinner. Many restaurants offer lunch-size or child-size dishes. These are smaller than full-size dinner entrees and resemble more closely what you would get in Okinawa. Tell your server you're dieting, and he or she will probably sympathize with you.
• Blow off the biggie size. |
| Eat as much as you want; you'll never be hungry and you'll never get fat. But for more variety, take three-fourths of your food from the featherweight category and then add small amounts of other foods. You'd end up in solid lightweight territory. That's where the lean Okinawan elders have always been. Remember, it's the balance that counts. If you choose too many foods from the top tiers and eat them too often—have too many American steak-and-egg breakfasts, for instance—you'll tip the scale into heavyweight, high-CD territory. |
| If you stick to a high-CD diet and just try to eat less, you will often feel hungry because a satisfying amount of 2.0 CD food is more than a few hundred calories. If you eat only a few hundred calories of your "diet" food, your stomach won't be very full. Remember, most of us need to eat two to three pounds of food per day, or we start feeling those hunger pangs. Once the hunger sets in, food becomes your obsession, and you fall into the classic pattern of guilty hinging—and before you know it, you've gained back all the weight you lost with such difficulty, and then some. Sound familiar? |
| If you feel hungry all the time, sooner or later your willpower will crumble; then there goes the diet, and back come the lost pounds. A much better approach is to eat the same amount of food but to reduce your caloric intake by reducing the caloric density of each mouthful of food. On the most basic level, that's really what the caloric density of your diet is—the amount of calories you put in your mouth. Not the amount of food; the amount of calories.
Caloric density (CD) is measured by the gram, so a food's CD number tells you how many calories are in 1 gram of that food. |
| You will be hungry later in the day and make up the calories anyway.
This fact was beautifully illustrated in a study done at our alma mater, the University of Toronto. In this study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. David Jenkins and colleagues fed two groups of volunteers the same food but in different increments throughout the day.84 One group got three meals a day; the other got seventeen smaller meals spread out through the day. |

Many chronic dieters have lost the ability to eat when they are truly hungry and to stop eating when they're comfortable.
Years of dieting have taught us to follow a certain plan to the letter and deprive ourselves until we can't stand it anymore. We are born with the ability to eat when hungry and stop when comfortable, but this is an easy thing to lose in an environment of fad dieting, with tempting food everywhere you go.
We have our work cut out for us, but it can be done. We have to start focusing on eating and exercising for the health of it and letting the pounds fall where they may. |

Although it's important not to go to bed too full, it's also important not to go to bed hungry. Like any other discomfort, this can make it harder to get to sleep or awaken you during the night. If you find you're hungry at bedtime, have a small, low-calorie snack. This is be especially important if you have issues with low blood sugar (or if you have a fast metabolism). |

I've tried every whole-grain, soy, and imitation pasta out there, but I have to thank the hungry Girl website (www.hungry-girl.com) for turning me onto an important breakthrough in noodle technology: shira-taki. And the amazing thing is that this ancient food has been used in China and Japan for more than 2,000 years. The noodles are derived from the root of a kind of yam, which is finely ground into the most water-soluble fiber known, glucomannan. Oat bran also contains some water-soluble fiber, giving it a limited ability to reduce cholesterol. |

This was an intriguing finding because we knew the Okinawans weren't malnourished, starving, or hungry. On the contrary, food and cooking have a tremendously important place in their cultural tradition, and traditional Okinawan cuisine is often touted as one of the last undiscovered gourmet pleasures.

In a "normal" year, one-third of the population was either hungry or very hungry for at least some part of the year. It was quite clear that Ireland was overpopulated, that the country could only survive if half of the population lived on potatoes and little else, that even then potato husbandry had to be successful, that the weather had to be benign, and that disease had to be avoided or contained.
These conditions were not often fulfilled. As already stated, the population of what is now Eire increased fivefold between 1801 and 1841. |

I could certainly eat more of this, but am I really still hungry?
Supposedly it takes twenty minutes before the brain gets the word that the belly is full; unfortunately most of us take considerably less than twenty minutes to finish a meal, with the result that the sensation of feeling full exerts little if any influence on how much we eat. What this suggests is that eating more slowly, and then consulting our sense of satiety, might help us to eat less. |

People are hungry for information about how to be healthier. I think to some degree conventional medicine has really hit its limit in the minds of most people. They now realize that you cannot treat the symptom and be a healthier person. They are ready for real solutions.
Dr. Liers: I think that they passed that a long time ago. To me, when I look at the PDR and all the reactions, I wonder, how can you be putting this in your body? How can you do this? We are a society that has been brainwashed, and we are robots. |

All the food, candy and sodas that are going to be consumed over the next several holidays have already been made in a factory, stored in a warehouse, shipped on a truck and loaded onto store shelves, just waiting for hungry, gullible consumers to come along and shovel down their own share of processed food additives and refined sugar derivatives.
There's a kind of sick beauty in the whole thing. I'm always struck by the idea that we must actually be the wealthiest people in the world, because we have so much "food" around here that people are actually just giving it away for free. |

99 slow down to compensate for not receiving any new calories. In addition, you'll be more likely to experience low energy and food cravings later in the day. Eat slowly. It takes twenty minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that it is full. Try putting your fork down between bites, and take a drink of water to help you slow down. |

Even the local Javelina don't eat aloe, and they're hungry little monsters who will eat practically anything. Once I tossed the rind of a canteloupe in my back yard, and a group of javelina came along and ate the whole thing. They also love carrots, by the way, and will destroy any sort of vegetable garden you try to plant in the desert. They're lovable little creatures, but they have poor table manners: They'll root out anything edible and leave you with nothing more than a mound of dirt.)

None of this is particularly helpful when you're up at the podium, but the body responds in essentially the same way whether you're staring down a hungry lion or a restless audience.
Two neurotransmitters put the brain on alert: norepinephrine arouses attention, then dopamine sharpens and focuses it. An imbalance of these neurotransmitters is why some people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) come across as stress junkies. They have to get stressed to focus. It's one of the primary factors in procrastination. |
| Running made me hungry to play tennis again, and then I got into squash with a couple of colleagues, including my good friend and longtime collaborator Ned Hallowell. We played three times a week for almost twenty-five years, competing, cajoling, and encouraging one other. We were all extremely busy, but our squash appointments were sacrosanct.
