The gut of humans and mammals in particular is one such "hot spot" for gene transfer. Studies have confirmed that antibiotic resistance genes from soil organisms have transferred into the human and animal intestinal tracts, as well as the human mouth.19 Several characteristics of GM crops, however, may overcome the natural barriers to transfer, making gene exchanges between GM foods and gut bacteria much more frequent.
1. Antibiotics: Gene transfer among certain bacteria increases one-hundredfold in the presence of the antibiotic tetracycline. |

Another hot spot of biodiversity - and yet another World Heritage Site threatened by global warming - is the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. Covering a huge coastal arc inland from Cape Town, it is home to the greatest concentration of higher plant species in the world outside the tropical rainforests. Its inauspicious rocky soils and arid Mediterranean climate support 9,000 different plants, more than 6,000 of which are found nowhere else on the planet. The most iconic plants in the region are the proteas. |
| During the winter months, south-east Asia is a drought hot spot, whilst the Amazon, Siberia and part of West Africa suffer most during the summer. Even areas that get more average rainfall, such as the higher mid-latitudes, will see this extra wetness coming in winter, outside the main growing season when crops cannot benefit as much. The study sums it all up with an ominous phrase: 'worldwide agricultural drought'. |

He was at another hot spot on 9/11 when a terrorist-controlled jetliner crashed into the Pentagon. Haplea told me with evident pride that he was back at work by noon on the same day. The naval intelligence expert hadn't left active duty for long at all when Sidney J. Caspersen, New Jersey's brilliant director of the Office of Counter-Terrorism, offered him the assistant director's position. ("The kind of talented people we want here at homeland security," Caspersen tells me later when we're back at his office in West Trenton.) "We have to work with every aspect of the community," Haplea says. |

In other words, the crud was a hot spot of free-radical activity. The question that arose was: is this a late event, or did these free radicals play a part in the process itself? Examination of very early atherosclerotic lesions (fatty streaks) yielded the same findings.
One of the main culprits associated with hardening of the arteries is high levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol. It is impossible to overstate how important this concept is: high levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol are dangerous, but unoxidized LDL cholesterol appears to be harmless, even if levels are high. |

The interests of bioprospecting corporations are not the same as those of people who live in a biodiversity "hot spot," many of whom are barely eking out a living. As the search for wild species whose genes can yield new medicines and better crops gathers momentum, these rich habitats also sport more and more bioprospectors. Like the nineteenth-century California gold rush or its present-day counterpart in Brazil, this "gene rush" could wreak havoc on ecosystems and the people living in or near them. |

This was a powerful chorus of opinion that seemingly put American psychiatry on the hot spot. How could psychiatry possibly justify giving such drugs, denounced in a Senate hearing as instruments of mental torture, to the mentally ill? But then Bayh, in a most remarkable statement, carved out one exception to the general rule. "We are not concerned about those [medical] situations where those drugs are used appropriately after proper diagnosis."30
At that point, the mentally ill had been put neatly into a box separate from the rest of humanity. |

The discussion occurred following Gallo's presentation, "On the Origin of Human Acute Myeloblasts Leukemia: The Virus-'Hot Spot' Hypothesis." Gallo was joined by Dr. Wu, who presented two related papers as an emissary of Litton Bionetics.32
During the session's open discussion, Gallo questioned whether the genetic "Hot Spot" that caused cells to become cancerous was responding to an external or internal virus-like particle:
Gallo: Are there viral (type-C RNA tumor virus) genes in some normal cells? Everyone by now must believe that there are some virogenes in at least some normal cells. |

My beloved Lab, Jesse, came down with a nasty 'hot spot' on his back. I bathed the raw area, put triple antibiotic cream on the wound, and tried everything to help heal it. Unfortunately, Jesse managed to scratch it before a good solid scar could form and the 'hot spot' began to spread.
"I was researching the healing power of garlic during this time. I came across a testimonial from one pet owner who had applied liquid garlic from Japan topically to heal her pet's wound. And then I read about a Russian soldier who used garlic as a natural antibiotic to treat his gangrenous wounds with. |

The El Nino is a hot spot in the South Pacific which occasionally moves eastwards, spawning destructive weather patterns all over the world for months at a time. Intense storms become common during an El Nino, and local climates can go topsy-turvy. Cold places can become warm and warm places can become cold. Wet places can get dry and dry places can get wet. For example, one of the dryest spots on Earth, the Atacama Desert in Chile, can receive torrential El Nino rains. |

Scientists would have to carefully inspect the GM plant's entire DNA structure to be sure that the process of inserting the gene or the CaMV hot spot didn't disrupt any other sequence.
They obviously didn't do that since they had missed two fragments of foreign DNA and the mystery DNA sequence that no one had ever seen before.
5. The fact that the position effects of the foreign gene and other factors can cause gene silencing—accidentally turning off native genes—presents a particularly difficult challenge. |

To summarize:
Preservation involves a financial investment by those who could afford it to buy up and preserve our remaining forest and other identified "hot spot" natural habitats before it's too late. We must allow nature to run its course in those regions.
Restoration will involve investments of trillions of dollars, but create jobs in the areas they are needed most. Following the example of China is one way to do the job. Logging and farming interests suddenly become conservation and replanting interests. |

Liver cancer was second on the list of IARC priorities. To determine the relationship between aflatoxin, a toxic chemical produced by the fungus Aspergillus flavus, and liver cancer, IARC studied individuals in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. |

Gallo: Are there viral (type-C RNA tumor virus) genes in some normal cells? Everyone by now must believe that there are some virogenes in at least some normal cells. I would like to know where they came from—or which came first—are these virogenes in fact really cell genes which the virus utilizes? Duesberg should speculate on this.
Duesberg: That's too much for me. |

Rauscher further stated that there is clear evidence that New Jerseyans smoke more than the national average, thus accounting for their excess cancer rates. However, in response to a subsequent question by Congressman Andrew Maguire (D-N.J.), Rauscher admitted that he had no evidence to support his claim. |

Smooth fresh gel liberally on the hot spot. The clear gel inside the leaf of the aloe plant speeds up the rate of healing and reduces the risk of infection. Between treatments with the calendula tea, Dr. Childs suggests applying cooling aloe gel as needed.
You can grow your own household first-aid plant or purchase the gel already bottled at a drugstore. Look for products that contain at least 90 percent pure aloe vera gel. Do not use it on deep wounds, says Dr. Lemmon.

Radon may be a problem in virtually every state, but the Reading Prong is a definite hot spot of contamination. The Reading Prong is a 150-mile geological formation rich in uranium extending through eastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, and parts of New York. Of the 20,000-plus houses tested so far in Pennsylvania, more than 60 percent recorded unsafe levels of the radioactive gas.

A discarded window or door with lead paint or an old rat poison container can cause a lead hot spot in the garden. Also, the use of lead arsenate, a common pesticide for fruit trees, may have caused extensive and continuing contamination. The only way to really know how much lead is in your garden is to have the soil tested.
If you have high lead levels, the best thing to do is to bring in clean soil. Have the new soil tested first to make sure it is lead free. Be careful not to mix the new soil with the old. |

Also giving the afflicted pet daily doses of vitamin C (100 mg. for small sizes and double or triple that for larger sizes) helps as well. (For more ideas on detoxification see section under Cancer.)
