Results of the 6 week randomized controlled OmniHeart trial, found that a high protein diet (25% energy (12 servings of plant protein/ day)) reduced HDL-C (-2.6 mg/dal) over a six week period compared to a high carbohydrate (58% energy (5.5 servings of plant protein/day)) diet (-1.4 mg/dl) and a high unsaturated fat (31% energy (5.5 servings of plant protein/day)) diet (-0.3 mg/dl)) [51]. A reevaluation of the prior scientific evidence of soy protein effects on lipids and lipoproteins, as well as soy isoflavones, was conducted by Sacks et al. and published as an AHA Science Advisory [180].

Even though proteins important to supplement if you are not already eating a high protein diet, it is far more important to supplement trace minerals, macro minerals like magnesium, zinc and calcium; various vitamins including all the B vitamins; plus vitamins C, D and K. In addition, you need to supplement numerous phytonutrients, which means the medicine that comes from plants. Those include various carotenoids like beta keratin or zeaxanthin, lutein, anthocyanidins, Proanthocyanidins like those found in grape seeds or even Resveratrol found in grape skin.

Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation: Unleash The Natural Healing Power That Lies Dormant Within You

When I went on the high protein diet (very similar to the type O diet plan) at age five, I felt great for about 18 months, as do so many others who go on the popular Atkins diet. Then I started developing stones in my liver, a dangerous arrhythmia and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, among other diseases. I had no idea that these ailments were due to protein poisoning. Ten years later I switched to a balanced vegan diet, and most of my illnesses went away within a matter of weeks.
I, therefore, have come to the conclusion that eating a high protein diet, which is among the most acid-forming diets anyone can eat, greatly upsets the apo ratio and induces an inflammatory response in the coronary arteries. Both factors go hand in hand and, as we now know, pose the greatest physical risks to the health of the heart. 7. Kidney Disease While many people live with stones obstructing the liver's bile ducts and the gallbladder, many people also live with undetected chronic kidney disease. When symptoms finally begin to appear, it is often too late to reverse the damage.
President Bill Clinton, a keen follower of the South Beach Diet and recipient of a quadruple bypass, suffered the consequences of the high protein diet (for details, see next section). Millions of Americans are following in their footsteps. A study by Scottish researchers, published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, examined the prolonged use of exceptionally low-carbohydrate weight-loss diets on gut health.
You won't notice the effects of a high protein diet until the blood vessel walls are well-thickened with excessive protein. Eating lots of animal protein triggers a powerful immune response in order to get rid of the foreign DNA and the dead, coagulated and damaged protein of meat, fish, eggs, poultry and dairy products. This immune response involves a powerful release of energy, thereby cleaning out impurities, improving skin functions and making you feel more grounded.

One controlled study found that people with some features of IRS lost more weight on a high protein diet than on a high-carbohydrate diet, although both diets produced similar improvements in a measurement of insulin sensitivity.27 Preliminary and controlled trials in people without IRS have also shown that substituting protein for carbohydrate in a low-fat diet can improve blood lipids (cholesterol [page 223], triglycerides [page 235], and HDL) towards reduced heart disease risk.28'29 More research is needed on the effects of high protein diets in people with IRS.

And a third study in the International Journal of Obesity compared a high-protein with a low-protein weight loss diet and concluded that healthy kidneys adapted to protein intake and that the high protein diet caused no adverse effects. If you don't currendy have kidney disease, a low-carbohydrate diet is actually an ideal way to help control the blood sugar levels that can eventually lead to kidney disease.

A high protein diet increases the demand for calcium and thus may be one of the factors leading to osteoporosis. ® PUBLIC MALNUTRITION Areport in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, reviewed in a syndicated newspaper article in 1993, described life inside Biosphere 2, an experimental environmental project. The residents lived there for 2 years, sealed so that only sunlight, electrical energy, and heat were exchanged with the outside environment. This was a model of a closed ecosystem.

I am not a vegan, but because of a blood sugar issue, I had a high protein diet. I tried to balance meats with soy because of the risks of too much meat. So I wasn't even in the high soy intake levels. But even after the banning of soy from my diet, I would feel bad. Mayo was one of the things that slipped my scrutiny. I remember when Best Foods made their mayo with some other oil but now they use soy oil. Well, I have been fine for several months until the other day, when I ate a snack that contained soy (labeled as "latticing"). It was within 24 hours and I was down for 3 days!

A high protein diet leads to severe Calcium and Magnesium deficiencies; the aging process triggered by amyloid by-product of Protein metabolism deposited in all connective tissue (tissue and organ damage). Meat counteracts healing in severe crushing accidents; doctors often recommend eating no meat. A high Protein, low Carbohydrate diet exacerbates excretion of Calcium, Phosphorus, Zinc, and Iron. Excess Protein foods may cause sinuses, head colds, catarrh, bronchitis, flu, or pneumonia.

What about a low carbohydrate, high protein diet? Such questions, having to do mainly with caloric content, are fine for a later stage of our journey, but more basic questions are, Is this food adulterated in any way? Is it denatured? Is it highly processed? Denatured foods are more likely to be concentrated in their sugars. They have no vital life energy. They have little or no enzymatic activity. They lack antioxidants. Eating some of them is practically like eating paper! For instance, processed cheese may be a combination of water, vegetable oil, powdered casein, and milk protein.

Too much phosphorus, such as is provided by a high protein diet, will decrease retention of calcium by bones and is a main factor in osteoporosis. Magnesium The adult body contains about 25 grams of magnesium, half in the bones. Normally we eat 300 mg daily and absorb about one third from the small intestine. Blood levels are regulated by the amount absorbed, losses in sweat and in the urine. Absorption is controlled by the same factors which control calcium absorption. It is essential in about 100 different reactions. Large doses are narcotic and anticonvulsant.
Lactic acid and a high protein diet increases absorption. Vitamin D-3 is essential for normal absorption and counteracts the effect of phytic acid. Blood plasma levels range from 8.5 to 11.5 mg 100 ml, while phosphorus levels range between 3 to 3.5 mg per 100 ml. Vitamins A, D-3, and C are all essential in the metabolism of bones. Adults require 1 to 1.5 G of phosphorus daily and about 1 to 1.5 grams of calcium. The need increases to 1.5 G for nursing and pregnant women. Milk and dairy products are good sources if the individual is not allergic to them.
I then placed him on a sugar-free, high protein diet. In March 1968 he was nearly well and negative for KP. In June 1967 he was depressed after he gone off the vitamin again. I started him on niacin, 2 grams, and ascorbic acid, 1 gram, after each meal, adding valium 10 mg at bedtime and neuleptil 5 mg in the morning. One month later he was well and I decreased the niacin to 4 grams daily and the vitamin C to 1.5 grams daily. In October 1972 he was married but the couple were having marital problem. The following year, still on his vitamins, he was normal.

Too many of us shuttle between two extremes, the high protein diet on one hand, and the high carbohydrate/low fat diet on the other. Although in some instances they may help you lose weight, they also tax the body's immune system, cause chemical imbalances that lead to high levels of inflammatory products, and cause hormonal imbalances as well as a variety of diseases. You might be thinner but now you're sicker. We also see that a strictly medical approach is not working either. Instead of using diet, allopathic medicine has chosen to treat pain and inflammation with drugs.

If you have below-normal renal function, you should talk to your health care professional prior to trying a high protein diet. Another danger of excessive protein in the diet has to do with insulin levels. One of the arguments for a high-protein diet is a claim that too many carbs raise the blood insulin level, which in turn causes weight gain by forcing the calories into fat cells rather than allowing these same calories to be burned as energy. A recent Michigan State University study seems to disprove this argument.

If you experience an increase in low back pain or a substantial weight gain during your menstrual period, we recommend that you eat a high protein diet for approximately ten days, commencing five days before the start of your period. A diet high in protein tends to lessen fluid retention. To minimize the level of stress placed on your lower back by your heavier-than-normal stomach, it is important that you develop very strong abdominal muscles. There is additional nutritional evidence that your diet at this time should also include foodstuffs high in iron and roughage.

If you're on a high protein diet, you're probably eating lots of meat, fish, and dairy products — all foods low in magnesium. To avoid becoming deficient, talk to your doctor about taking supplements. According to Reiter, nutritionists aren't sure what amounts of these nutrients will help combat insomnia. He suggests you start by taking 500 milligrams of magnesium and 1000 milligrams of calcium just before bedtime. "But first," he says, "ask your physician if there is any reason you should not be taking these supplements in these amounts." B vitamins.

I have seen patients go through antidepressant withdrawal, do very well for some time and then try the Atkins high protein diet (which I thought had killed enough people in the 70's for us to learn how dangerous this diet is). It was as though they were ripped out of time and placed right back into the worst stages of their withdrawal with many thinking they needed to go back on SSRIs. I believe this reaction is due to the protein binding effect of these drugs.
