HSV-2 can cause both herpes labialis and herpes genitalis, or genital herpes. Genital herpes is more of a concern because it can be spread by sexual contact and is potentially transmittable at childbirth. Genital herpes resides in a dormant state in nerve endings and periodically reactivates, forming lesions that are infectious. When the virus is dormant it is not infectious. A tingling sensation signifies that the virus is about to be expressed; this sensation can be used to predict upcoming periods of infectivity.
Herpes simplex is treated with acyclovir (Zovirax). |

SIGNIFICANT FACT promising relationship—or they may be the earliest signs of a cold sore—medically known as herpes simplex (aka oral herpes). If so, you should kiss—or rather tell— your date goodbye for a while because herpes is highly contagious.
þBesides eating, our mouths serve another important food function: they cool or warm food to the right temperature for swallowing. This helps prevent painful "pizza mouth" and "ice cream headaches."
If you have a weird pins-and-needles feeling on your lips that isn't herpes, it may be a sign of a calcium or vitamin D deficiency. |

As far as diseases influencing human sexual behavior, some researchers are examining the possibility that genital herpes may affect human sexual feeling in a way that could influence behavior. Two researchers at the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of California at Irvine, Carolyn G. Hatalski and W. Ian Lipkin, have speculated that the herpes virus may heighten sexual feeling because it is so intertwined with the nerves that carry those feelings. |

The cold sore is the most common sign of activity of one herpes virus, herpes simplex (HSV). The first infection usually occurs in childhood as a generalized viral illness with a fever, malaise, and achiness—the usual symptoms kids get. Although these symptoms quickly go away, the virus becomes latent in a branch of the nerve that carries feeling from around the mouth. Current understanding is that the body's immune system works effectively to hold the virus back from actively reproducing and causing symptoms of infection. |
| Herpes and Epstein-Barr Virus
Several of the herpes viruses are responsible for causing infectious mononucleosis, an illness usually seen in adolescents and characterized by a fever, a bad sore throat with swollen glands, and severe fatigue. Nearly 10 percent of people who get mono still have symptoms of "postinfectious fatigue" six months later. The relation between bad viral infection and long-lasting illness led to the idea that patients might have chronic mononucleosis. |

Used as a base of various juice blends, broccoli has long been advocated for relieving symptoms of herpes outbreaks. Now some scientists believe they may have found out why. Researchers at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio, tested human and monkey cells and found that a naturally occurring compound present in broccoli (and other vegetables like cabbage and brussels sprouts), called indole-3-carbinol (I3C), may inhibit the herpes virus from reproducing. |

| After someone has chicken pox, typically as a child, the virus that caused it—a type of herpes virus called varicella-zoster virus (VZV) or herpes zoster—retreats to nerve cells along the spinal cord, where it remains for life.
When immunity to VZV declines, either due to age or because the immune system has been weakened by a disease (such as cancer or AIDS) or medication (such as chemotherapy), the virus can suddenly flare up again as shingles.
SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR
One of the unique aspects of shingles is that it occurs only on one side of the body, along the affected nerve. |

Licorice also can be used topically to help heal herpes virus lesions (shingles, oral, or genital herpes).
Dosage and Safety
Tincture (1:5): 10-20 drops, three times per day.
Decoction: Add lh tsp. dried root to 8 oz. water, decoct 10-15 minutes, let steep 10-15 minutes. Take 4 oz. twice per day.
Tablets: A preparation known as DGL licorice has most of licorice's benefits without the risk of elevated blood pressure (see Safety Issues below). Chewable tablets are most effective. Take one 200-300 mg chewable tablet before meals (three times per day). |

The most common viral diseases are herpes simplex, herpes zoster (shingles), Cytomegalovirus, human papillomavirus (HPV), respiratory syncytial virus (colds), and influenza (flu).
The belief that vaccinations, like flu shots, have eliminated death from infectious disease in the twentieth century is widespread. In fact, much of the reduction in death from infectious disease is due to public-health measures, including improved nutrition and sanitation. And vaccinations are not without potential danger. We still don't know the potential long-term effects of vaccination. |

Genital herpes. Nearly 31 million people—one in six Americans—have genital herpes. herpes, caused by the virus herpes simplex type 2, is a lifelong infection that produces genital sores as often as once a month in some men. Other men never develop symptoms, although they are still infectious. Acyclovir (Zovirox), an oral prescription drug, can ease the symptoms but won't cure the disease. Sores from herpes or any other STD also increase your risk of contracting AIDS, since the virus can easily enter the body through these open blisters.

Researchers are attempting to temporarily use methylation inhibitors to uncloak hidden Epstein-Barr in tumor cells. Countering methylation will, however, raise homocysteine levels, which is also problematic. |
| For the present time, given the prevalence of herpes viruses in humans, it would be wise to incorporate foods and dietary supplements that inhibit herpes family viruses. Quer-cetin, found in red onions and red apple skin, and also available as a dietary supplement, is the most studied plant molecule that inhibits viral growth. [Journal Medical Virology 15:71-79, 1985] It has also been shown to inhibit the human papillomavirus. [Oncogene 22: 5504-14, 2003]

The leaves are used topically as a poultice in treatments for angina, burns, fever, headache, heatstroke, and herpes.
Edible Uses
Anise hyssop has a wonderful aniselike flavor, with a hint of sassafras, and it is often used as a flavoring agent. Plains Indians used anise hyssop tea as a liquid sweetener. The plant's leaves are wonderful in small amounts in salads. It also can be made into a liqueur.
Other Uses
The essential oil is used in perfumery. The herb's leaf and flower can be used as breath fresheners. |

In other words, sometimes the herpes virus may want you to get some action. host manipulation occurs when a parasite or disease affects our behavior for its own ends. But that's not the only way disease affects human behavior, of course—there are thousands of ways in which personal, cultural, and social standards have evolved in order to help us avoid or manage disease. Some behavior is instinctual, like the sense of disgust at certain sights and smells, which prompts us to avoid animal waste or spoiled food—things that are usually ripe with infectious material. |

Although one report published in a major immunology journal indicated that THC reduces resistance to the herpes simplex virus,44 a separate study has shown that THC binds to the herpes virus and thus inactivates it. Topical application of an isopropyl alcohol extract of cannabis has been used to provide symptomatic relief of herpes sores. It prevents blisters and makes sores disappear within a day. Cannabis also provides symptomatic relief from gonorrhea and syphillis.45

Taking 500-1,000 mg of vitamin C every hour or so as soon as symptoms begin will sometimes stop the bug in its tracks— even with really tough viral infections like herpes and shingles.
• For decades, scientists have investigated the use of vitamin C to prevent and even treat cancer. The higher the levels of vitamin C in your body, the lower your risk of gastrointestinal and cervical cancer. Benefit of high vitamin C levels has also been seen in prevention of bladder cancer.
Anyone taking a NSAID should include 1,000-3,000 mg of vitamin C per day in their multinutrient plan. |

That seemed to make sense— after all, by age forty 96 percent of people have been infected with Epstein-Barr, a member of the herpes family, while only a fraction develop autoimmune disease. In the world of autoimmune-disease research, the question of whether Epstein-Barr could cause lupus had been asked and answered and the answer was no.
But resuscitate it they did. Harley and James were applying much more sophisticated lab techniques than had been available to the scientists in the 1970s. They had actual amino acid sequences in hand to study and compare. Still, Harley was cautious. |

| It is effective when applied topically to the herpes lesions in the forms of lithium succinate (8%) or lithium chloride solutions. To speed the recovery from a herpes infection, lithium can also be supplemented at a dose of 5 to 10 mg, two to three times daily.
Other Conditions: Lithium also increases the uptake of vitamin B12, and enhances the transport of folic acid into cells. This is of interest due to the clinical usefulness of lithium therapy for depression.
Optimum Dose
There is no established RDA for lithium. The RDA for lithium would probably be in microgram doses. |
