 Bart Classen, MD, a former researcher at the National Institutes of Health, reported a 60 percent increase in Type-1 diabetes following a massive campaign in New Zealand from 1988 to 1991 to vaccinate babies six weeks of age or older with hepatitis b vaccine.  In a study of 37 people who were carriers of the hepatitis b virus, treatment with Phyllanthus amarus for 30 days cleared the virus from the body (as documented by loss of hepatitis b surface antigen) in 59% of cases." In a later study this herb was not effective. However, patients in that study had harbored the virus for a longer period of time, and it was suggested that treatment fot up to a year might be necessary for patients who ate long-term carriers. Additional research is needed to determine whether Phyllanthus amarus is effective against hepatitis b. |

| As many as 60 percent of hepatitis b cases are sexually transmitted. HIV infection and AIDS (the most advanced stage of HIV infection) are sexually transmitted diseases as well. Less common STIs, such as lymphogranuloma venereum and chancroid, present as pimple-like or ulcerative genital lesions.
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss some of the alternative approaches and conventional therapies used in the treatment of chlamydia and gonorrhea. |
