Many (if not all) of these medicines can cause GI ulcers and heart problems. The newest generation of NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib (Celebrex), lumiracoxib (Prexige), valdecoxib (Bextra) are now the most widely used for arthritis. Many of the adverse effects seen with older NSAIDs are also seen with the COX-2 inhibitors—with the likely exception of increased risk of heart problems.
Actions: All NSAIDs block the production of hormone-like substances in the body that produce inflammation and pain. |

Heart Problems
A narrowing of the arteries as a result of deposits of minerals or fat, respectively called arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis, causes most of the heart problems that lead to heart attacks. These problems are diet related, and along with genetic predisposition and stress, they comprise the major causes of heart disease.
Bypassing the Bypass Operation
The present-day medical treatment for occluded arteries is a bypass operation. However, there is a natural remedy which has been reported by many to be very effective for clearing arteries. |

In fact, heart attack survivors that don't have an intimate relationship for emotional support or social interaction are twice as likely to suffer major heart problems within one year of their initial heart attack.
The Healing Power of "Loving Touch"
Every time someone touches us with loving care or we do the same for someone else, an emotional exchange takes place that profoundly nourishes the heart. |
| You may have excessive protein in your blood or blood vessels and the bleeding may be just the thing to cause thinning of the blood and to prevent heart problems. This self-regulating mechanism is very powerful and keeps you healthier than any immunization program or mega-doses of vitamin and mineral supplements. This unspecified form of immunization may be necessary from time to time in order to maintain a strong and healthy intestinal flora (two thirds of our immune system is located in the intestinal tract). To remain healthy and immune, we need the daily fight with bacteria and viruses. |

SELENIUM AND CANCER
Excesses of selenium create methylated selenium in the body. This methylated form of selenium has been found to reduce tumor risk. Conversely, populations in areas with low selenium in the soil have been found to have higher cancer incidence. Supplementation with selenium has been found to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the risk of one type of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) was found to be increased by selenium supplementation. Further research is needed to clarify selenium's role in cancer prevention. |

Only one in twenty patients arrive at the emergency room with that most fearsome symptom—chest pain—as their primary symptom, though heart problems are the most common ED physician diagnosis among those over age 45. Although the number of patients is relatively small, the potential consequences of chest pain are life or death.
Sudden cardiac arrest is the number one killer of adults in the United States. Each year, about one-quarter million die suddenly, often with no symptom onset. |
| The underlying cause of most heart problems is coronary artery disease, the most common treatment for which is catheterization or stent. In each case, the surgery involves a small incision in the leg or groin. Catheterization is diagnostic. Its utility cannot be assessed separately from those surgeries which may follow it.
So we begin our consideration of cardiac procedures with the "insertion of stent," a wire mesh tube used to prop open an artery. The stent is collapsed to a small diameter and put over a balloon catheter, which is then moved to the area of blockage. |
| On February 18, 2005, an advisory panel for the FDA voted unanimously that Vioxx and Celebrex can lead to serious heart problems. Most of the panel also recommended warning labels that detailed the drug's danger and also a ban on consumer advertising. The panel then voted 31-1 that Pfizer should be allowed to continue selling Celebrex, and 17-15 that Merck could sell Vioxx.47
"At least the pharmaceutical lawyers must be happy," I said. "The panel's endorsement of both drugs will definitely help Merck and Pfizer fend off the hundreds of lawsuits already filed by patients and their survivors. |

Even the targeted therapies like Avastin and Erbitux cause heart problems. Side effects must be addressed. Patients often take antioxidant supplements to reduce unnecessary side effects, but their use is often discouraged by oncologists. They say it interferes with treatment.
Chemotherapy: over-promoted
One of the problems in sorting out the effectiveness of cancer therapies is ascertaining exactly how much treatment itself contributes to survival. There are now approximately 10 million Americans living with cancer. |
| Researchers concluded that" vitamin E could improve the effectiveness of this drug while having a protective effect against side effects caused by the drug, such as heart problems." [Journal Urology 136:529-31, 1996]
One of the most toxic cancer drugs is cisplatin. In a laboratory study, mice were administered vitamin E concurrently with cisplatin. Survival was not affected. In mice who had melanoma cancer cells implanted and were then given high-dose cisplatin, vitamin E prolonged survival. |
| High doses of radiation used in the 1970s and 1980s produced long-term increased risk for heart problems. Radiation dosage has been reduced after doctors recognized that the radiation itself resulted in an increased risk for heart disease and cancer in the opposing breast.
Frankly, the latest data does show that reduced-dose radiation doesn't appear to increase the risk for heart disease. |
| Patients undergoing radiation treatment have to endure more than the long-term risk for heart problems.
—? For example, about 25% of radiation-treated, breast cancer patients experience immediate lung damage. [Acta Oncologica 45:16-22, 2006]

Recent reports demonstrate a dramatically increased rate of secondary leukemia for breast cancer patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy (anthracycline) with radiation treatment, with radiation being an independent factor for the development of leukemia. Alpha-blockers should not be taken under any circumstances; these drugs cause more heart problems than do conventional diuretic treatments. Potassium-sparing diuretics are dangerous and should be avoided.
If you can't control your blood pressure with a diuretic, you may need to add another medication. This means going to a beta-blocker, ACE inhibitor, or calcium channel blocker. I do not recommend atenolol; use another beta-blocker like metoprolol. Women should not take a calcium channel blocker. ACE inhibitors or ARB drugs can help Caucasians with left ventricular (heart pump) failure. |

Stress alters the variability of our heart rates, which leads to arrhythmias and even fatal heart problems.
In general, life's stressors can be grouped into three categories, which all have different implications for your life and for your health.
Ongoing Low-level Stress. You work, you have a family, you interact with people who sometimes sneeze without covering their mouths. Life generates a constant hum of stress, no matter who you are or what you do. |

Now it has become well-known in the industry that Huma-log can deposit and clog the canula in the tubing of some insulin pumps. A friend recently contacted me with this very problem, and included internet pictures for me to observe. These clogs are usually not noted by the alarm system of the pump. The resulting high blood sugar, which undoubtedly will be unnoticed for a period of time, demands that the complete set (paraphernalia that attaches the pump to the user) be changed. |

Instead, use behavior and mental techniques that have been shown to reduce anger and anxiety, as well as the chronic heart problems associated with them. If you're one of the sixteen million Americans who have anger issues, try these techniques to make a change that we'll all be thankful for:
Do the Opposite. Research has found that "letting it rip" with anger actually escalates anger and aggression and does nothing to help you (or the person you're angry with) resolve the situation. In general, to cope with an emotion, you have to do the opposite. |

Beta-blockers are often used to treat heart problems such as high blood pressure, angina, and arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms). They function by interfering with specific cell receptors called beta-adrenergic receptors, which results in relaxed heart rate and lowered blood pressure, but also suspension of normal nighttime melatonin production. The beta-blockers propranolol and atenolol are particularly damaging to melatonin levels. Calcium-channel blockers also seriously impair nighttime melatonin levels. |

| Cardiogenic shock is associated with heart problems; hypovolemic shock is caused by an inadequate volume of blood in the body; anaphylactic shock is triggered by an allergic reaction; septic shock is associated with an infection; and neurogenic shock is caused by damage to the nervous system. Symptoms of shock typically include anxiety or agitation; confusion; cool, clammy skin; chest pain; shallow breathing; and unconsciousness. Shock is also associated with very low blood pressure.
DANGER: Shock is life-threatening and requires immediate emergency assistance. |

CHOLESTIN
Cholestin is an ancient remedy that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries for the treatment of heart problems. Derived from yeast on red rice, it is called red rice yeast extract. It has eight statin compounds that are HMG coenzymeA reductase inhibitors, just like statins, that have been shown to reduce cholesterol. Because they are chemically identical to statins, they therefore have the same risks as the statins.

The researchers believe the reason is that millions of women abandoned hormone replacement therapy after a large federally funded study reported that women who regularly took the menopause drug Prempro (a combination of estrogen and progestins) were more likely to develop heart problems and breast cancer. Soon after the findings emerged, many women stopped using the hormones and breast cancer rates began falling, the statistics show.6 The findings raise the question: could reducing exposure to other sources of external synthetic estrogens further reduce breast cancer rates? |

This is where the ripple effects of the body's stress response can lead to full-blown mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as high blood pressure, heart problems, and cancer. Chronic stress can even tear at the architecture of the brain.
But how to make sense of such a woolly concept as stress? By keeping in mind its biological definition. Above all, stress is a threat to the body's equilibrium. It's a challenge to react, a call to adapt. In the brain, anything that causes cellular activity is a form of stress. |
| The letter noted that cardiologists are interested in anxiety as a risk factor for heart problems, and then pointed out, "Exercise training has been shown to lead to reductions of more than 50 percent in the prevalence of the symptoms of anxiety. This supports exercise training as an additional method to reduce chronic anxiety."
The letter was a polite way of saying that the original article missed the boat. Lavie has written more than seventy papers on exercise and the heart, eleven of which focus on anxiety. |

You might know that this antiinflammatory pain medicine was removed from the market in 2004 because studies found an unacceptable increase in risk of heart problems. In its short lifetime as a blockbuster drug, it's believed that some 20 million Americans used it at some point to treat pain, usually from arthritis. A one percent increase in risk for heart attack and stroke in users of this medicine led safety officials at the FDA to calculate that about 55,000 people may have died from heart attacks and strokes as a direct result of their use of Vioxx. |
