So at any rate, there we had that occurrence about a year ago with health canada taking Adderall off the market and our FDA not taking Adderall off the market. Subsequently, we learned our FDA lobbied health canada behind-the-scenes not to take it off the market.
Mike: That is unbelievable. The FDA applied pressure to foreign nations to protect dangerous drugs in our own market.
Dr. Baughman: Yes, it's just that. Then about three or four months ago, health canada put Adderall back on the market. It wasn't because they had any good evidence of its safety or effectiveness. |

| Why isn't the FDA joining health canada and the other countries in banning the placement [of mercury fillings] in expectant mothers?" he asks. "FDA silence over mercury is the same kind of silence our government once had for tobacco."
Still, any ban could have consequences. A study by dentist Howard Bailit and colleagues at the University of Connecticut found that a ban on amalgam fillings would raise costs, cut down on the number of cavities filled and hurt the oral health of most Americans.

It has a history of safe use in Canada. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that this e-mail warning is a hoax. |

According to health canada and the Canadian Cancer Society, about 40% of Canadian men and 35% of women will develop cancer during their lifetimes.3 Indeed, 25% of all Canadian men and 20% of women will die from it.
Role of Vitamin B-3
There can be no doubt that nutrition plays an important role in determining who develops cancer.4-7 Many nutrients, including calcium and selenium, appear to protect against specific malignant neoplasms.8"9 This also appears to be true of vitamin B-3, which has anti-cancer properties. But according to CBC TV news, health canada "abandoned that research less than a year later saying it was 'too difficult to put an effective surveillance system in place.'" The news anchor added, "So at this point, there is little research into the health effects of genetically modified food. So will we ever know for sure if it's safe?"8
Not with the biotech companies in charge. Consider the following statement in a report submitted to county officials in California, by pro-GM members of a task force. |
| Monsanto Canada's NewLeaf-Y potatoes (Shepody)
This variety was approved without any animal testing whatsoever. health canada offered the following assumptions instead. "Amino acid sequence of the CrylllA protein ... closely related to the sequence of the same proteins that are present in strains of B. thuringiensis ... used for over 30 years ... did not show homologies with known mammalian protein toxins...not judged to have any potential for human toxicity ... history of known safe consumption. |
| Monsanto Canada's Roundup Ready Canola (GT73)
This variety, as well as other canola and cotton crops, were approved without tests. health canada wrote: "Since only the processed oil from transgenic GT73, or lines derived therefrom, will be available for human consumption and the processing removes proteinaceous material, there are no additional toxicity or allergenicity concerns with this product."
In reality, some cold pressed oils may contain GM protein and a fat soluble toxin produced from the GM transformation process may be found in the oil. |

Officials of the World Health Organization, health canada, Japan, and Sweden, recommend a 1:4 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 for oil consumption. Hemp oil is closest to this range among naturally occurring oils with a ratio of at least 1:3. Udo Erasmus indicated that "one can use it for a lifetime without ever suffering efa deficiency."34
For therapeutic purposes, Erasmus suggests using a ratio that is higher in omega-3 for correcting degenerative conditions. He has found that flax oil, with a ratio of 4:1, produces good results. |

Monsanto Canada's insect resistant corn, MON 810
As part of this variety's 1997 approval, documents from health canada state:
1. "The human safety assessment of the CrylA(b) protein was confirmed in experiments, which included protein characterization, digestive fate in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, and acute oral toxicity in mice. Data were generated that demonstrated that the active CrylA(b) protein product in MON 810 was equivalent to that produced in the naturally occurring B.T.K."
This statement is incorrect. |
| Ann Clark, "People who assume that there is actual testing, and more specifically, actual testing involving actual grain from transgenic crops, will be amazed to learn that risk assessment of GM crops is largely heuristic or assumptions-based, as is disturbingly clear from the summary statements that accompany Health Canada's assessment of GM submissions." The organization Common Ground says, "The Canadian GM regulatory process is a ruse, claiming to safeguard human and environmental health, but actually intended to facilitate commercialization of GM crops. |
| Ann Clark "Evidence accepted by health canada for approval varies inconsistently among submissions, with 10 of 15 GM corn crops and one of four potato crops presenting lab and purified protein feeding trial evidence, while the other five corn and three potato crops did not. Actual livestock feeding trial evidence, however limited, is provided for only one of five cotton crops and for one soybean, but not for other crops destined largely for livestock feed. |

"Significant dose-response relationships indicate that the concentration of methionyl-rBST in milk of cows treated with methionyl-rBST is raised progressively above the zero concentration of methionyl-rbST in milk of untreated cows." This fact has been obscured by comparison of the wide ranges of total BGH in the blood and milk of normal and rBGH-treated cows. |

| The Food and Nutrition Board partnered with health canada, the Canadian government agency responsible for nutrition policy, and the two groups jointly appointed the Standing Committee on the Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board.
As a result, not only did the definition of RDAs change, but three new values were also created: the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), the Adequate Intake (AI), and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL). All four values are collectively known as Dietary Reference Intakes, or DRIs. |

It was the first growing license. And health canada said, "What? Hemp?" But they granted the license and then they started looking at it. More and more people showed them how they could distinguish between hemp and marijuana. They said, "Okay, that's possible. There's no harm in doing this. There's a market that might be created, and it's good for the environment. So let's do it." They made a regime where you do have to have a license to grow hemp in Canada, but it's actually easier to get than a driver's license. But they do want to know who's growing it. |

Baughman: I mentioned before that health canada found that there were roughly 20 to 30 cases of strokes in young children, roughly 10 or 12 sudden deaths, heart abnormalities. Just before the Feb. 9 FDA hearing, there were 51 reported cases of complications, deaths, strokes and heart attacks reported to the FDA MedWatch program. I have written testimony on the record for the Feb. 9 FDA conference. In fact, back in the 1990s, I testified in a Kansas City case for Mr. Gary Bell on behalf of his daughter Stephanie. |

Then about three or four months ago, health canada put Adderall back on the market. It wasn't because they had any good evidence of its safety or effectiveness. Adderall is a mixture of the two salts of amphetamine, so it's a pure amphetamine. The fascinating thing about Adderall is that it was a weight reduction drug for adults called Obetrol. It's was so extremely addictive that Obetrol was taken off the market for that reason. Now we have the FDA bringing this extraordinarily addictive drug to market for little children.
Mike: So it was too dangerous for adults but not unsafe for children. |

In July 2001, health canada, the FDA's Canadian counterpart, issued a warning about the antidepressant nefazodone, marketed under the trade name Serzone by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. health canada said the drug was causing liver damage that "resulted in hospitalization, liver transplantation, or death." It took the FDA another six months to come to the same conclusion and issue an order requiring a similar warning when the drug was prescribed in the United States. It stated in part: "Cases of life-threatening hepatic failure have been reported in patients treated with SERZONE . . . |
