The best grain to get, by the way, is sprouted grains. You've seen this at the health food store, perhaps. Ezekiel bread is a great example of this. I'm currently eating a cereal that's made with nothing but sprouted grains: Ezekiel cereal by Food For Life. This is a fantastic product.
So, if you were to stack these boxes against each other, what would happen? Let's say you have your standard Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, and that's your refined white-flour product that the mass market is going to consume. Then, a little bit above that you have General Mills’ whole grain Total cereal. |

Some grain products contain significant amounts of bran. Bran provides fiber, which is important for health. However, products with added bran or bran alone (e.g., oat bran) are not necessarily whole-grain products.
On their website, www.wholegrainlife.com, General Mills offers excellent information regarding "What Is a Whole grain?" and "How to Find a Whole grain Product." The good news is that General Mills products are readily available in every grocery store across the nation.
Kashi (www.kashi.com ) is another of one of my favorite whole-grain brands. |

Choose whole grain products (whole grain breads, whole grain flour products, brown rice, etc.) over their processed counterparts (white bread, white flour products, white rice, etc.).
Whole grains provide substantially more nutrients and health-promoting properties than refined grains. Whole grains are a major source of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, minerals, and B-vitamins. The quality and content of protein in whole grains is greater than that in refined grains. |

Mike: Do you offer your grain in various physical formats such as flakes and whole grains?
Leventry: Yes, we do. It's kind of interesting. Here are the quinoa flakes that are produced from Bolivia -- Bolivian quinoa. You can see the difference between the whole grain and the higher fiber and then the polished, lighter color white grain.
Mike: I see that the whole grain is darker, more like a whole wheat bread, versus a white bread.
Leventry: Right. It's a good analogy. |

When wet, the pollen grain breaks open and releases even tinier particles that reach the air passages, and it is these that aggravate asthma. In dry weather the whole grain is more likely to be caught in the upper respiratory tract, the nose and throat, and cause hay fever instead of asthma.
Asthmatics will know that not all plant species release pollen that causes problems. Plants that are wind-pollinated generally produce a huge amount of tiny pollen grains, while insect-pollinated plants release much fewer, larger grains that do not float in the air in the same way. |

Generally, use one part grain to two or three parts water. Then cook until tender.
¦ If you're on a diet, keep quick-to-grab grain foods—even if they're whole grain—out of the house.
¦ If you want to have cereal for breakfast, try old-fashioned steel-cut oats, quinoa, or a whole-grain combination such as Kashi, the Breakfast Pilaf.

Ringworm on general areas of the body (arms, legs, trunk) is called tinea corporis; ringworm on the scalp is called tinea capitis; ringworm in the grain area is called tinea cruris (also called jock itch); and ringworm on the feet is called tinea pedis (or athlete's foot).
Ringworm typically appears as itchy, red, raised, scaly patches of skin that may blister and ooze. The patches often have sharply defined edges that are redder than in the center, which creates the appearance of a ring. The skin may also appear unusually dark or light. |

In recent times, since the introduction of factory farming, large cattle-raising operations have mainly fed grain to their livestock because it's cheaper and makes animals fatter and heavier. That means more profits for food companies. Consequently, most of the cuts of meat in supermarkets are from grain-fed animals.
However, the meat from grass-fed animals is more nutritious than the meat of grain-fed animals. It contains more conjugated linoleic acid (a component of fat that boosts fat-burning and the buildup of lean muscle mass), more omega-3 fats, and vitamin A. |

Basically, all you're getting when you eat white bread, white flour or breakfast cereals made with white flour is empty calories -- nothing but the carbohydrate, or technically the endosperm of the grain.
You also get some things you don't want in white flour. Sometimes you get pesticide, solvents or other contaminants. I don't want to be eating anything that says "bleached." If you look at the ingredients label on a lot of these boxes, it says, "enriched bleached flour." Do I want something bleached in my body? Gee, I don't think so. What's this "enriched" anyway? |

You know, I was so surprised when you told me I was overdoing those grain products! 'Specially since I was using whole grains—wheat, rye, rice, and oats. I thought they were really good for me and Jack, and that we could eat as much as we wanted—as long as we watched our weight, of course. I remember what you said: excessive intake of grains—even whole grains— and animal protein leads our bodies to lose calcium, even if we're taking a big calcium supplement, whereas vegetables and fruits help our bodies retain calcium. |

Additional specificity is suggested for the grain and vegetable groups. At least half of all grains consumed should be whole grains. Vegetables are divided into five subcategories, and the number of cups per weeks from each is specified as part of each food intake pattern (Fig. 2).
The recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables are higher than in the previous FGP. For example, 5 cups of fruits and vegetables are recommended for the 2200-calorie pattern, compared to 3.5 cups (seven half-cup servings) used for the FGP. |

Try the many different Middle Eastern, African, and Spanish grains and rice now available at most supermarkets. Each one has its own distinct texture and taste. Whole grains are best if used within a month, otherwise their natural oils may go rancid. On your Active Wellness eating plan, grains, rice, and pasta all fall into the whole grains/starches group.

It's actually an instant hot cereal that's made from quinoa, which is a grain that's native to the high plains of South America. It's actually a complete protein, so you don't have to combine it with other beans or grains to get a complete protein, and it's also high in fiber. We have flaked quinoa, so it absorbs water more easily, but it hasn't lost any of its nutritive value in the process. You're getting all the protein, all the fiber, all the other vitamins and minerals that you would with whole grain quinoa. |

Factory-farmed cattle eat grain, which causes the fats in their meat and milk to accumulate more inflammatory omega-6 fats. In the days when milk and meat came from pasture-raised cattle, that milk and meat were full of those wonderful omega-3s, which are made into anti-inflammatory chemicals in the body. Omega-3 oils are found most plentifully in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts; vegetables and algae also contain some omega-3s.
Think of omega-6 fats, sugars, and refined grains as slow-burning fires and omega-3 fats as cool, fresh, quenching water. |

In fact, it has more protein than any other natural product in the grain world. It also has a considerable amount of fiber, and again that makes for healthy digestive function. The protein and fiber content of Quinoa make it a fantastic all-around supergrain to use in your diet or to put into a food bar like this one. So, once again, thumbs up to the formulators of this product for choosing Quinoa. It's not something you typically find in food bars.
The next two ingredients in the bar are wheat grass juice powder and barley grass juice powder. These are cereal grain juices. |

Until then, please read everything from the USDA with a grain of (sea) salt. What follows is text published by the USDA:
1. What are phytonutrients and where are they found?
The term "phyto" originated from a Greek word meaning plant. Phytonutrients are certain organic components of plants, and these components are thought to promote human health. Fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and teas are rich sources of phytonutrients. Unlike the traditional nutrients (protein, fat, vitamins, minerals), phytonutrients are not "essential" for life, so some people prefer the term "phytochemical". |

Cut against the grain of the meat. (The direction of the grain will be obvious.) Spread some of the onion-garlic mix with the gravy over the meat.
You can also refrigerate the brisket overnight, which will firm up the meat and make it easier to cut. Slice it thinly and store it in a sealed container.
Tip: If you store the gravy, separate the onions and garlic and store them in a another container. When the gravy is refrigerated, the fat will rise to the top. You can discard this. |

| A great way to transition to grain coffee is to mix it with regular coffee as you scoop the dry grounds into your coffee filter. So if you normally use 4 scoops of ground coffee, then try 3 scoops of coffee with 1 scoop of grain coffee for the first week. Continue to transition gradually until you have eliminated your consumption of regular coffee altogether.
I don't recommend decaffeinated coffee or tea because known carcinogens are used in the decaf-feination process, and decaffeinated drinks are still highly acidic.

At that time, grain millers began to separate the wheat germ (seed) from its surrounding endosperm (consisting mostly of starch). With this change, whole-grain brown bread gave way to refined white flour and white bread. The more nutritious germ was often fed to livestock because they thrived on it, while people preferred the starchy portion.
Around the same time, millers also switched from stone to metal grinding wheels, enabling them to produce a finer and more powdery flour, resulting in a more sugarlike starch. |
