According to Byron Bliss, Vice-President of Sales, Phoenix Motorcars plans to sell fleets of vehicles to school districts and businesses, government agencies and companies with large groups of outside representatives.
The 2007 market strategy of Phoenix Motorcars targets operators of fleet vehicles, such as public utilities, public transportation providers, and delivery services. This market presents a significant opportunity for an increasing number of fleet operators now seeking freeway-capable, zero-emission, all-electric vehicles. Some government agencies currently use plug-in hybrids. |

Well, in the past twelve years of asking for information from various government agencies in the United States and in Canada, I have grown accustomed to waiting. In some cases it has taken more than two years. (See the sodium pentobarbital controversy discussed in Chapter Three.) As of November 2002, I have never received a reply to my original question: Does the FDA/CVM test commercial pet foods to ascertain if they are indeed pure and wholesome and contain no harmful ingredients? |

Dietary recommendations have been made by numerous government agencies and health care organizations for SFA. All recommendations consistently advocate reductions in SFA. In 2005, the DRI Report [12] recommended that SFA be a low as possible within the context of a nutritionally adequate diet. Specific targets have been recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005 [22], the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) ATP III, and the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2006. The Dietary Guidelines Report recommends that SFA be less than 10% of energy. |

A legion of non-governmental organizations, scientists, and even government agencies has been devoted to advocating TSCA's reform. The Government Accountability Office concluded in 2005 that the agency has inadequate test data to make safety assessments, and has permitted the chemical industry too much leeway in keeping information from public view by indiscriminate assertion of proprietary information. |

From underreporting, distorting, or hiding inflation and money supply statistics, to implementing wage and price controls, to limiting access to one's own funds, lawmakers and government agencies will try every trick in the book—except to decrease the supply of worthless currency—to turn things around. But the measures will prove as fruitless as those introduced in the early 1970s. Then, the Nixon administration implemented economy-wide wage and price controls that lasted for two years to stem apparent rampant inflation. |
| Amid overstretched budgets, squandered resources, and fierce resistance against rising taxes, federal, state, and local government agencies will be under continuing pressure to dilute or eliminate programs for all but the neediest individuals and families. Private charities, meanwhile, will see donations drop precipitously, as economic strains force those who might once have underwritten their efforts to scale back philanthropy. Numerous nonprofit organizations will likely go bankrupt trying to meet increased demands for assistance in anticipation of donations that never arrive. |

Now, with the USDA backing this fraudulent labeling decision by the Almond Board of California, we have two dominant government agencies (the FDA and USDA) who are both in favor of the blatant mislabeling of food products in order to keep consumers ignorant of how their foods are really being processed and degraded. |

Keep your eyes open for the reports of consumer advocate groups who often sound the alarm way in advance of government agencies (a good place to start is with the Environmental Defense Networks' Oceans Alive Web site, www.oceansalive.org). | The real failure is on the part of government agencies, such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Medical journals and academic researchers have become dependent on drug company money and/or are vulnerable to drug company lobbying. Doctors and the public still trust these institutions to independently oversee the integrity of the knowledge that informs our medical care, when they simply are not able to do this anymore.

These vaccines are being unleashed on us with the blessings and sanctioning of many government agencies. Docile, silent, and uninformed, we will be at great risk of harm. To clarify this point I contacted various government agencies. Stephen Sundlof, DVM, Director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, referred me to Linda Grassie, FDA's Public Information Specialist. (In the past, Grassie and I had communicated on several other issues.) Grassie clarified that when sodium pentobarbital was approved in 1980 it was approved for euthanasia in dogs. Therefore, the FDA believes that at the time of approval the phrase, "Do not use in animals intended for food," applied to non-human food use of these animals since dogs were not considered food animals. |
| In 1994 I contacted the Food and Drug Administration/ Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA/CVM) and posed this question: Are government agencies aware that euthanized pets are being used in commercial pet foods? The reply I received from Christine Richmond, spokesperson for the FDA, Division of Animal Feeds, reads in part, "In recognizing the need for disposal of a large number of unwanted pets in this country, CVM has not acted to specifically prohibit the rendering of pers. However, that is not to say that the practice of using this material in pet food is condoned by CVM. |
| Limited Regulations Internationally
It is clear that there are no government agencies in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Japan that actually regulate the raw ingredienrs used in commercial pet foods. The voluntary organizations, AAFCO, and CVMA that set standards for the industry, have no hard and fast enforcement standards. The logos of these organizations, which are displayed on pet food labels, simply mean that the products meet the minimum standard for nutrition, nothing more. |
| There were other times when I was extremely frustrated with the run-around I received from government agencies, organizations involved with the pet food industry, the rendering industry, and at times, veterinary research centers. What has kept me going is the hope that pet owners will read my findings and be convinced that their pets' health is directly related to what they eat—and that most commercial pet foods are garbage. |
| Since the vast majority of pet food sold in Canada is imported from the United States, I then turned to the United States to find out about regulations and what government agencies are involved. At first, I assumed that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (USDA/APHIS) is involved. I found out that this agency only administers the Animal Welfare Act that deals with minimum standards of humane care and treatment of animals sold into the pet trade, transported commercially, exhibited to the public, and used in research. |

One more thing: government agencies don't recommend high levels of folic acid supplementation, but the reason has nothing to do with the safety of folic acid. Doses of up to 20 mg (20,000 meg!) have been used safely with humans, plus it's a water-soluble vitamin, which means you'll get rid of any you don't need.
So the problem isn't with taking a lot of folic acid. The problem is that folic acid can mask the symptoms of B12 deficiency. With folic acid supplementation, you'll get rid of the symptoms of B1 2 anemia, but not the nerve damage that might ensue. |

The idea that some individuals might be more immune to the effects of environmental contaminants—while others, given their genetic codes, are the proverbial canaries in the mine—is rarely taken into account when government agencies examine environmental exposures to chemical agents and establish safety rules about their use. In the case of human insulin, the process —not the product—was the patentable feature, since no one had synthesized a human hormone from DNA modified E. coli bacteria. In the case of new analogs (hormones) of human insulin, the chemical (hormone) produced by E. coli gene technology is patentable.

They reacted most favorably to independent experts — a female epidemiologist went over especially well — and to government agencies. "People were willing to believe FDA," Lexie said.
