The stomach is a courageous organ, both for what it does (breaks down nutrients in preparation for processing by the rest of the intestinal tract and then the liver) and for what it puts up with in the process (fast food, the stress of modern work culture, and gas, gas, gas!). As such, the modern gut is the martyr of the contemporary corpus, Saint Gastronomica with arrows. It is hardly surprising, then, that this same organ suffers from increasing use of pharmaceuticals.
One of the great innovations of the new pharma era was gastrointestinal medication, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors. |

Disconnect your automatic gas stove pilot light—a constant source of gas seepage—and keep gas use to a minimum. In just one hour cooking at 180°C a gas oven emits enough carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide fumes to trigger an allergic attack. Use lead-free paint and petrol.
Wash your clothes (and your dishes) in detergent-free biodegradable washing soda or soap. Chemicals in washing powders cling to garments and then penetrate your skin.
Buy clothes made from natural fibres like cotton or wool, not synthetics. |

American gas stations in the summer of 1979, most people believed they were caused by a shortage of fuel. In reality, notes John Sterman, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and author of Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World, "The total inventory of gas in the system remained nearly constant. But the actions of nervous drivers moved the gas from below-ground tanks at the corner gas stations to above-ground rolling storage"—vehicle fuel tanks, in other words. The amount in question: two-and-a-half days' supply. |

Holy basil can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and is a carminative (relieves digestive upset) that is useful for relieving gas, nausea, and vomiting.
• Licorice offers significant benefit for irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It is a good choice for irritation, inflammation, or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a prominent remedy for gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, ileitis, and leaky gut syndrome, and it is an excellent digestive tonic. |

If they are not given enough gas, the spark plugs will still burn what they are given, but the explosion will be inefficient and may not be powerful enough to move the car. The engine will sputter, and, if there is not enough gas to keep it going, it will die. The amount of substrate (gasoline) provided to the enzymes (spark plugs) is key to efficient operation.
While your car has a fuel gauge telling you how much energy you have left in the tank, your cells do not. |

American gas stations now make more money selling food (and cigarettes) than gasoline, but consider what kind of food this is: except perhaps for the milk and water, it's all highly processed nonperishable snack foods and extravagantly sweetened soft drinks in hefty twenty-ounce bottles. gas stations have become processed-corn stations: ethanol outside for your car and high-fructose corn syrup inside for you.
« TRY NOT TO EAT ALONE. Americans are increasingly eating in solitude. |

| A similar situation might occur if American auto manufacturers decided to omit a gas gauge from new automobiles. The American Automobile Association could step up to sell flexible sticks for determining the fuel level in your gas tank. But ultimately, if you ran out of gas, the problem was yours alone.
The Damages of "Tight Control"

It's like this: If you drove up to a gas station selling the exact same gas at two pumps, but the pump on the left was two cents per gallon and the pump on the right was two dollars per gallon, which gas would you buy for your car?
It's a no-brainer, right? You'd fill up at two cents per gallon. That's what NiMH rechargeable batteries offer you: super cheap power, plus the ability to refill the battery 1,000 times before needing to toss it. |

Any physicist is at a loss to tell you why water doesn't just evaporate into gas or why atoms in a chair or a tree stay that way, particularly if they are only supposed to communicate with their most immediate neighbor and be held together by short-range forces.12
Water is among the most mysterious of substances, because it is a compound formed from two gases, yet it is liquid at normal temperatures and pressures. |

In 2002, tegaserod (Zelnorm) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the short-term treatment of IBS in women who experienced constipation. Since then, it has been prescribed for 68% of IBS cases in the US, according to the drug's manufacturer, Novartis.
Is Zelnorm the drug that women who have IBS have been waiting for? |

When it was time for the return journey home I pulled into a gas station and filled up the gas tank. Other than that, 1 could do little else to check the serviceability of my vehicle, as the hood of my car was so thoroughly crumpled and mangled that I doubted it would ever open again. Trusting that divine intervention was working well so far, I drove home to Bozeman, silently entreating the class of angels who doubled as car mechanics to hold the car together just a little while longer. |

I had to stop in a small town to fill up the car with gas. When I walked into the station to pay for the gas, six local residents were sitting around a small table, all smoking cigarettes as they sipped coffee. I could hardly take a breath without coughing. I actually began to feel sick. For those who are not accustomed to cigarette smoke, its effects are more clearly recognizable. I am sure there are times and situations that you've had similar experiences. |

Fruits produce ethylene gas as they ripen. This gas will decrease the storage life of the carrots.
PREPARATION AND SERVING SUGGESTIONS:
• Peeling carrots may make them look pretty but generally it is unnecessary. Besides, peeled carrots lose some of their vitamins.
• Steaming, braising, roasting, and grilling are the preferred methods of preparing carrots. There is more nutrient loss when carrots are boiled. And though cooking carrots in a microwave may be a time-saver, there is a reduction in beta-carotene content when you do so. |

Because Germany lacked narural gas fields, the more efficient process was not commercialized until 1929 when Shell Chemical Company opened a plant at Pittsburg, California to convert cheap natural gas into cheap fertilizer. The technology for making ammonia synthesis the dominant means of fixing atmospheric nitrogen arrived just in time for the industrial stagnation of the Depression.
Ammonia plant construction began again in earnest in the run-up to the Second World War. |

Cardiac pacemaker: a common application of an electromagnetic field in medicine
A common application of piezoelectricity is the lighter in your home barbecue, or a modern gas grill. When you click the "light" button on your stove, you hear a clicking sound. That sound is a ceramic element being struck. The ceramic material is piezoelectric; in response to mechanical stress, it produces an electric spark that ignites the gas used in the burners.
The first documented use of piezoelectricity was by the Ute Indians, who lived in what is now the American state of Colorado. |

Fluorescent lights are filled with a gas containing low-pressure mercury vapor and argon. The inner surface of the bulb is coated with a fluorescent coating made of varying blends of metallic and rare earth phosphor salts. When a high-voltage current is passed through this vapor, the electricity causes the gasses to "fluoresce" or emit light.
Fluorescent light bulbs are more efficient than incandescent light bulbs of an equivalent brightness, but they flicker, hum and burn out more quickly when cycled frequently. |

But in 1973, in the grip of America's first oil crisis, getting your car filled up with gas depended upon two things: the day of the week and the last number of your license plate. Those whose plates ended in an odd number were allowed to fill up on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays; even numbers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with Sunday a gas-free day of rest. Bill had an odd number and the day was Tuesday. That meant that no matter where he had to go, no matter how important his meetings, he was stuck at home, held hostage by a few Middle Eastern potentates and OPEC. |

The amount in question: two-and-a-half days' supply. Thus, while many Americans blamed OPEC and President Carter, the fear and panic that arose when drivers saw cars queuing to fill up and prices moving higher at the pump actually played a major role in stoking the crisis.
No doubt a systemic meltdown will provoke a similar response. |

It's going to show you a different side of society, where the interdependence that we take for granted might not remain viable. |
