The major growth inhibitory component in garlic extract is allicin, and garlic products that have the highest amount of allicin are the most desirable for treatment. Look specifically for products with high allicin and the stabilized form of allicin. Garlic is diverse in its uses for vaginitis because it is both antibacterial and antifungal.49'50 I recommend garlic vaginal suppositories for both Candida (yeast) vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis. A clove peeled carefully so as not to nick the garlic can be inserted into the vagina for 6 to 8 hours. |

Solid garlic extract - an extraction of the chopped bulbs with ethanol or methanol is allowed to evaporate.
Aqueous extract - fresh bulbs are macerated in cold water (1:1).
Fermented garlic - the minced drug is soaked over a long duration in a water-ethanol mixture, volatile agents escape and the garlic becomes odorless. Steam distillations and tinctures are also possible.
Daily Dosage: The average daily dose is 4 gm of fresh garlic or 8 mg of essential oil. One fresh garlic clove, 1 to 2 times daily.
Storage: Garlic should be hung in plaits in a dry place. |

Take 600 mg of an aged garlic extract twice a day. Passionflower, which can be taken at 250 mg in capsule form or 1 ml in tincture form, helps to decrease blood pressure associated with stress. Dandelion leaf, when taken at 300 mg or 2 ml three times a day, acts as a gentle, natural diuretic to lower blood pressure.
HOMEOPATHY
Due to its chronic nature, high blood pressure is best treated by a combination of complementary and conventional therapies. If mild symptoms have recently developed, consult a homeopathic practitioner as a first resort to bring blood pressure down to a desirable level. |

General Recommendations
Study
Researchers at UCLA Medical Center completed a one-year, double-blind, randomized clinical study with people taking aged garlic extract. Researchers found that people taking aged garlic extract had significantly less coronary plaque formation than did those in the placebo group. Also, the group supplementing the garlic tended to have lower blood homocysteine and cholesterol levels. |

Two types of commercial supplements (powdered Garlic and Aged garlic extract) were tested against each other and placebo. The Garlic failed to reduce LDL-C more than 10 mg/dL (0.26 mmol/L) when used for 6 months. In addition, no statistically significant effects were seen with Garlic in terms of HDL-C, triglyceride levels, or the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL-C. Based on various observations made, the authors conclude that Garlic in "reasonable" doses in any form is unlikely to generate lipid benefits (Gardner 2007). |
| Although additional studies are needed, the authors elucidate these possible links and suggest a possible anti-dementia benefit in tandem with heart disease benefits identified with Aged garlic extract (AGE) particularly (Borek 2006).
Hyperlipidemia
Note: There are contradicting results regarding the lipid-lowering effect of Garlic, which may be attributed to lack of manufacturing standardization of the products used in the studies. The fresh Garlic may contain higher amounts of the active ingredient, allicin, which is inactivated upon cooking. |
| The authors concluded that more in-depth and appropriate studies are needed before definitive conclusions or recommendations about garlic's cardio-protective powers in humans can be made (Rahman, 2006)
A small trial examining the effects of Aged garlic extract (AGE) on endothelial dysfunction in people with cardiovascular risk factors or established vascular disease generated mixed results. |
| Atherosclerosis
A pilot trial that evaluated the ability of Aged garlic extract (AGE) to retard the progression of calcification in the coronary arteries found incremental benefits for high-risk patients also on stable statin and aspirin therapy, for example. Nineteen of the 23 patients were enrolled in the placebo-controlled, double-blind, one-year trial. Nine were randomized to take 4 mL of AGE (1200 mg), and 10 to take the equivalent amount of placebo. |
| Regular ingestion of food products containing garlic should not pose a problem. If garlic extract is taken with concomitant use of antiplatelet agents, monitor bleeding time and signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding. Garlic supplements should be discontinued at least 10 days prior to elective surgery (German et al, 1995).
Coleus forskolii: Concurrent use may result in increased risk of bleeding. Clinical Management: Caution is advised in the concomitant use of garlic and Coleus forskolii (forskolin). Regular ingestion of food products containing garlic should not pose a problem. |
| Regular ingestion of food products containing garlic should not pose a problem. If garlic extract is taken with concomitant use of indomethacin, monitor for signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding. Garlic supplements should be discontinued at least 10 days prior to elective surgery.
Thrombolytic agents: Concurrent use may result in increased risk of bleeding. Clinical Management: Concomitant use of garlic and thrombolytic agents is not recommended. Regular ingestion of food products containing small amounts of garlic should not pose a problem. |

Caprylic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid found in coconut oil, has been shown to be an effective antifungal agent. In one study, patients taking 3.6 grams of caprylic acid daily for two weeks completely eliminated their Candida overgrowth. A typical dose is 1 to 2 grams daily, taken with meals. |

A cell study at the Philadelphia Biomedical Research Institute tested the effects of green tea extract and aged garlic extract on sickle-cell dehydration, which exacerbates blood-cell damage and may increase clotting. Epigallocatechin gallate, a major antioxidant component of green tea extract, almost completely inhibited sickle-cell dehydration. The garlic extract reduced dehydration by 30 percent.
Taken together, these studies show that people suffering from sickle-cell anemia risk multiple nutrient deficiencies and often have extremely high vitamin requirements. |

Garlic, in particular, seems exceptionally toxic to these cancer cells; even at a one part per thousand dilution, garlic extract succeeds in significantly slowing cancer cell growth (Figure 18).
To summarize, the lowest incidence of cancer in individuals eating the most fruits and vegetables is directly related to the content of these fruits and vegetables in anti-cancer compounds; the presence of these compounds restricts the development of the microtumours that occur spontaneously in our tissues. |

I have fresh garlic in huge amounts, as well as garlic extract, just in case anything happens, I have enough for not just myself, but enough for my staff and anyone involved in my life.
Mike: Wonderful. Wonderful advice, and there are products out there, aged garlic as well, and I think Kyolic has a product.
Wolfe: Kyolic has a great product out there.
Mike: So garlic is number one. What is your second?
Wolfe: The second would be echinacea, and echinacea is a flower. It's a traditional kind of Native American herb, very well renowned for its immune system supporting properties. |
