Because of its proven high toxicity, in August 2002 Belgium became the first country in the world to prohibit fluoride supplements.
"Fluoridation ... is the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated and it has been perpetrated on more people than any other fraud has," said Professor Albert Schatz, Ph.D. (Microbiology), discoverer of streptomycin and Nobel Prize winner. Fortunately, 98 percent of Western Europe has rejected water fluoridation. This includes Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. |

The risks associated with fluoridation of the public water supply have been the subject of vigorous and often heated debate since fluoridation began in 1945. Although much research has been done regarding the safety of fluoridation, a recent review found all prior studies to be of sub-optimal quality and far from definitive.6
Some,7,8 but not all,9,10 studies have found a correlation between the amount of fluoride intake and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures. |

Professor Foster concludes, "if the only significant gain from water fluoridation is reduced tooth decay in children, risks from fluoridation would seem to outweigh gains. However, if as suggested by the evidence presented in this article, because of its antagonism with both aluminum and calcium, moderate levels of drinking water fluoride are protective against Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and calcification of the arterial system, then the reverse may be true. Obviously, the great fluoridation debate can be expected to continue in earnest. |

I am really surprised that Medical News Today published the puff piece from the American Dental Association about their celebration of 60 years of fluoridation, but missed the real news from last week. This was the revelation carried by the Washington Post and the Associated Press (July 13, 2005) that a Harvard thesis has shown a connection between water fluoridation and a 700% increase in osteosarcoma in young men if they are exposed to fluoridated water during their 6th to 8th years. |

Aspartame, too, is a known toxic substance that's well documented as a neurotoxin. And fluoridation? Well, let's just say that once you realize where the "fluoride" really comes from (it's a toxic waste chemical scraped off the emissions scrubbers of coal-fired power plants), you start to understand the magnitude of the fluoridation scam.
Any genuine health care reform should start with one simple principle: stop poisoning the people. Sorta simple, isn't it? Too simple for politicians to grasp, of course, especially when they're confused by all the special interest groups screaming at them. |

Chlorine is a dangerous, caustic chemical. While it does provide societal benefits we should never forget that it is deadly as well. There is chlorine in our drinking water, in our showers, in our swimming pools, and in the water used to irrigate our crops. |

This beneficial action of fluoride became the basis for fluoridation of many water supplies in the United States beginning in the 1940s, occasioning some heated debates.
Fluoride used in water fluoridation was initially associated with the fluorides used to kill insects, mice and rats. These insecticides and rodenticides, however, used poisonous organic fluorides, not inorganic fluorides, which are significantly less toxic, and which are the forms used for water fluoridation. At one point, it was thought by a few that fluoridation of the U.S. |

Today it is a recognized fact that tooth decay is less prevalent in areas where fluoride occurs naturally or is added to the drinking water. The fluoridation of municipal water supplies, which began in the 1950s, now covers more than half of the United States population. Experts recommend one part per million of fluoride in water as a health-enhancing level. When fluoride levels are too high, harmless but unattractive brown stains can appear on the teeth. Levels of fluoride in excess of eight parts per million can result in the discoloration of teeth and, possibly, in bone abnormalities. |

By any honest measure of psychological health, these doctors, dentists and health authorities who promote mandatory vaccinations, water supply fluoridation and mercury fillings are nothing less than clinically insane. By any honest legal measure, they might be considered criminally negligent for their actions.
I think it is no exaggeration to label these people criminals and consider them to be a threat to public health. |
| Dentists, for example, still insist on the mass poisoning of children through the fluoridation of public water supplies with an EPA-regulated toxic industrial byproduct chemical they incorrectly call "fluoride." Those same dentists -- all of whom should have their dental licenses revoked, by the way -- continue to place mercury into the mouths of children through the use of "silver fillings" (which, in reality, contain more mercury than silver), inducing a lifetime of mercury poisoning. |

The United States is one of a very few countries that still promote water fluoridation. Most of Western Europe has outlawed it; even most of U.S. communities, when allowed to vote, have rejected fluoridation; this has happened in more than 50 communities since 1999. Conditions related to fluoridation of the water include the following:
¦ Hip and bone fractures. Residents of cities that fluoridate their water have double the fluoride in their hip bones compared to the rest of the population. Hip fractures are found to be nearly twice as frequent among people drinking 2.6 to 3.4 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, as compared to people drinking 1 ppm fluoride in the water. Evidence suggests that fluoridation alters the basic architecture of the bones.19

Opponents to fluoridation contend that when fluoridated water is consumed regularly, toxic levels of fluorine, the poisonous substance from which fluoride is derived, build up in the body, causing irreparable harm to the immune system. The Delaney Congressional Investigation Committee, the government body charged with monitoring additives and other substances in the food supply, has stated "fluoridation is mass medication without parallel in the history of medicine." Meanwhile, no convincing scientific proof has ever been generated that fluoridated water makes for stronger bones and teeth. |

Presently, both these sources are becoming more and more polluted as toxic chemicals, acid rain, raw sewage, agricultural herbicides, pesticide runoff, chlorination, fluoridation, sewage landfills, and radioactive wastes are either dumped into or seep into them. One of the best-known examples of toxic water pollution to date is the infamous Love Canal, where according to the New York Times in 1984, thousands of tons of toxic chemicals were dumped, including 60 pounds of the deadly poison dioxin. |

Thus, it brings us to this bizarre reality of fluoridation: this environmentally hazardous, toxic substance is illegal to dump into rivers and streams, unless it passes through the bodies of human beings first, in which case it's not only perfectly legal, it's actually demanded by ADA dentists. One of the greatest problems in convincing the public of the danger of adding fluoride to water is that those pushing for fluoridation have ignored studies showing the dangers of cumulative doses. Furthermore, most of their calculations leave out other sources of fluoride, such as toothpaste, mouth rinses, fluoride tablets, fluoride dental treatments, fluoride in foods, industrial airborne exposure, pesticides, and medications. Many antibiotics, anesthetics, and other medications also contain fluoride. |

When we combine the epidemiological evidence with the above-cited research we see strong evidence for a connection between hypothyroidism and fluoridation.
With the strong connection between early hypothyroidism and intelligence, it is obvious that the importance of this connection goes far beyond just not having energy to get through the day, or suffering from cold intolerance. The thyroid gland plays a major role in the formation of the brain during early development, and hypothyroidism during this stage can lead to severe mental retardation (cretinism). |

All have been used in the fluoridation of water. Fluorides cross the placental barrier and the effects on the fetus are unknown. New clinical evidence shows that kidney disturbance sometimes is due to the amount of fluoride it contributes to the blood. Fluorine containing compounds (sodium, potassium, or calcium fluoride) are illegal. A petition for extension in dietary supplements was terminated in 1973. Addition of fluorine compounds to food is limited to that from fluoridation of public water supplies and to that resulting from the fluoridation of bottled water within limits set by the FDA. |
