Compact fluorescent light bulbs contaminate the environment with 30,000 pounds of mercury each year

Alternatives to mercury-containing compact fluorescent lights Fortunately, consumers no longer have to bring mercury into their homes through the use of fluorescent lights. There are now sensible alternatives. One of the most eco-friendly options is LED light bulbs which are not only mercury free, they're also 300% more energy efficient than fluorescent lights (and about 1000% more efficient than incandescent lights). Unlike incandescent light bulbs, which light up regardless of the electrical polarity, LEDs will only light with positive electrical polarity.

LED lights will make incandescent and fluorescent lights obsolete I will offer a prediction right here: LED lights will render both incandescent light bulbs AND compact fluorescent lights obsolete. Many countries are already banning incandescent lights, and four U.S. states are considering their ban. Compact fluorescent lights will eventually be abandoned as the public learns the truth about their mercury content. Only LED lights offer energy efficiency and environmental friendliness at the same time.

Many state governing agencies have even adopted their own regulations regarding fluorescent lights. In California, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, it is unlawful for anyone to dispose of fluorescent bulbs as universal waste, according to LightBulbRecycling.com. So far, BanTheBulb.org fails to offer mercury-free alternative to fluorescent lights, such as my own company's high-efficiency LED lighting products found at www.BetterLifeGoods.

DOCTOR'S NOTE: Researchers have found that exposure to fluorescent lights at night disrupts the body's circadian rhythm and a study conducted in 1986found that fluorescent lighting can increase the likelihood of developing certain cancers."7 This is especially troubling for anyone (such as employees of most offices, hospitals, retail stores, and restaurants) that have to work for extended periods every day under this type of lighting. Exposure to fluorescent lights has also been linked to an increase in stress hormones.

Why light bulbs are accelerating global warming and mercury contamination

All fluorescent lights contain mercury, period. It's the dirty little secret of the CFL industry. This is mercury brought into your home, and if you break a fluorescent light in your home, you are releasing a powerful neurotoxic heavy metal in your home! Birth defects, neurodegenerative diseases, developmental disorders, dementia... these have all been linked to mercury exposure. It's not even debated in the scientific literature. Even doctors readily admit that mercury is extremely toxic to the human body.
I hope The Home Depot stops giving away toxic fluorescent lights and starts selling LED lights instead. Isn't it interesting how the U.S. government requires Energy Saver statistics to be printed on washing machines, dryers and other household appliances, but NOT on incandescent light bulbs (which are, by any measure, the least efficient household appliances of all)? I think we should start with mandated labeling that shows the lifetime cost of each bulb sold at retail so that consumers can start to see the different in the total cost of ownership right there at the point of purchase.

LED lighting products found at www.BetterLifeGoods.com These LED lights are completely free of mercury, and they generate clean white light using 1/10th the electricity of incandescent light bulbs. They're more expensive up front (due to the use of high quality components), but they last 50,000 hours and pay for themselves within 1 - 2 years of use due to electricity savings. Promoting the use of compact fluorescent lights is, I believe, creating a serious threat to the health of our environment. Most consumers do not properly recycle fluorescent lamps.
It also supports a higher tax on incandescent light bulbs to make fluorescent lights more cost competitive. The EU has recently announced its intention to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Energy saving is an essential part of the EU's strategy to reduce CO2 emissions, but 80 percent of home lighting today uses highly inefficient incandescent bulbs that convert only five percent of the energy they consume into light.
While the widespread consumption of fluorescent lights may save our nation from wasting electricity on incandescent lights, it may also lead to a mercury contamination catastrophe. Never before in the history of our world has so much mercury been so widely distributed across the environment. The long-term effects of this contamination are currently unknown, but they can only be negative. The only unknown concerns the degree of harm that will emerge.

Controlling the waste Many state governing agencies have adopted their own regulations regarding the disposal of fluorescent lights. In California, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, it is unlawful for anyone to dispose of fluorescent bulbs as universal waste. These laws are based on the well-documented toxicity of the heavy metal mercury. Mercury (also called 'quicksilver') is a heavy, silvery transition metal most commonly found in thermometers, barometers, and other scientific apparatus.

They represent a new era in environmentally friendly lighting, and they make incandescent lights and fluorescent lights virtually obsolete." Currently, about twenty percent of the electricity used in the United States is used to power lights. About ninety percent of that electricity is wasted by the extremely inefficient lighting technology still used today in homes, businesses and schools across the country.

First, the price issue: LED lights are, indeed, far more expensive up front than incandescent lights or fluorescent lights. Our high-end 10-watt LED light bulb, for example, currently costs just under $100. It replaces an incandescent 100-watt light bulb that typically costs around $1. So at first, the 10-watt LED light seems to be $99 more expensive. However, lights do not actually work unless they also consume electricity, and thus the real question about the cost of light bulbs must take into account the Total Cost of Ownership, or TCO.

Many Americans spend up to 90% of their day indoors, in buildings with fluorescent lights. This lack of exposure to bright sunlight or its artificial cousin, full-spectrum light, is a major contributor to disrupted circadian rhythms and resulting reduced melatonin levels. Lack of regular exercise, structural imbalances, and chronic stress are also common factors. So, too, is a poor diet, often marked by overconsumption of stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, and sugar. Over-the-counter medications can also play a role.
Ordinary fluorescent lights may emit 400 lux, while a room lit by sunlight can be up to 3,000 lux. On a clear summer day, the light outside can be up to 100,000 lux, and even on gloomy, stormy days, outdoor light is rarely below 500 lux.13 The lack of exposure to bright sunlight—or at least high-intensity artificial (full-spectrum) light—is associated with diminished nocturnal melatonin production. This may be due to reduced daytime levels of serotonin. Studies indicate that people subject to typical amounts of indoor light have lower serotonin levels than those exposed to bright sunlight.
EMFs, a type of low-level radiation generated by computer monitors, televisions, fluorescent lights, electronic devices, and sometimes wiring, are generated when electric currents flow through wire coils, so every time you turn on an electric current, EMFs are produced. Although you can't see, hear, or feel them, they're very real, and they do have impacts on the body. They can pass through almost anything except lead barriers, but their strength does diminish with distance.
Additionally, you may consider using a light box; these specially designed devices use full-spectrum fluorescent lights to simulate early-morning sunlight. Light boxes typically cost $100 to $450 and are widely available in various sizes and styles, from wall units to desk lamps to visors. They usually come in values of 5,000 to 10,000 lux.

It's a plastic tub that holds water, combined with a very small water pump that dribbles water (sort of like a tabletop fountain pump) through a series of plastic channels, a set of fluorescent lights with an auto-timer, a few nutrient tablets and herb seeds. $150 seems like a steep price to pay for such things. If the unit actually produced a fine mist using spray nozzles and a high-pressure pump, that would be different. But it for a device that simply dribbles water over plant roots, $150 seems like a steep price to pay. The lights are good, though.

Power lines, cellphones, computers, transformers, fluorescent lights, clock radios, and even hair dryers are just a few of the modern devices that 248 c u emit dangerous electromagnetic waves. In addition to artificial sources of radiation, fault lines under the ground are natural sources of potentially harmful radiation as well. When electromagnetic radiation comes into contact with living matter, it causes ionization—the loss of electrons from atoms. This process negatively affects DNA, and can result in chromosomal mutation or even cellular damage and death.

Similar controlled studies were conducted at the New York University School of Medicine, which confirmed and substantiated Dr. Shaw's research results.

Prevent prostate cancer with sunlight As we see more research on this, I suspect we’ll receive more evidence proving that the sun protects us from a long list of chronic diseases. This research in particular was about Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), but I expect to see a lot more research about prostate cancer especially.
