Flu is a perfect example: the peak of the flu season follows the summer solstice by six months, and its global spread alternates between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, in keeping with hemispheric seasonal changes.
Vitamin D levels reach their seasonal low in about February and into March and April as you move farther from the equator, which extends the flu season. Older people and children, who are most susceptible to severe influenza infection, often are the very people with vitamin D and dietary deficiencies.

Babies born during winter and spring (those exposed to influenza during the fall to winter flu season) are at greater risk of eventually developing schizophrenia.19
• Babies born in southern hemisphere locations where the flu season is opposite the flu season in the northern hemisphere also have increased risk patterns that are opposite those of the northern hemisphere.20
• Mothers who report having had influenza during their pregnancy are more likely to have children who will eventually develop schizophrenia. |

Indeed flu season mortality for older people declined from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Since then it has remained constant.21
Thus, what we expected was not what actually happened. Were a standard medical practice such as influenza vaccines to disappear, the effect on mortality among the elderly would be negligible. The example seemed to illustrate our thesis. Perhaps we actually could assess medicine's performance with a thought experiment.

In other words, the CDC and vaccine manufacturers cooperate, with the primary stated purpose of boosting vaccination numbers by spreading fear. |

| Flu vaccines are manufactured several months before flu season actually begins, so they may not be accurate at all for the incoming influenza strain. With a pandemic influenza virus, there is a sudden change in the structure of the virus, making the manufacture of a vaccine nearly impossible.
According to a Department of Health and Human Services press release, "Pandemic virus will likely be unaffected by currently available flu vaccines that are modified each year to match the strains of the virus that are known to be in circulation among humans around the world. |
| Every flu season, the government and much of the medical community promote flu vaccinations for millions of Americans. Should you get the vaccine? Here's what you need to know to make your decision... There are two types of vaccines... The flu shot contains inactive (killed) virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that it can be given to anyone older than six months of age, including healthy people, pregnant and nursing women and those who have chronic medical conditions.
The other form is a nasal-spray vaccine called FluMist. |

The death rate in and out of the flu season is actually about the same. But then, as we have seen with AIDS, statistics can be manipulated in ways that support theories which have only one objective, to keep the medical business going. For instance, when a person who is about to die anyway also catches the flu, he will be listed as a flu victim.
Instead of giving the elderly population vaccines, in the misguided belief that this would take care of them, we could help them much more by improving their general resistance to disease through good diet, social engagements and exercise programs. |

| For those who catch every cold going around and when simple colds tend to become bronchitis, sinusitis, or other more serious complications that can linger for many weeks, I use adaptogens for three to six months, especially prior to the winter cold and flu season.
For those who find it hard to concentrate, complain of a loss of mental focus, and are easily flustered by everyday little stressors, I use adaptogens for several months, expecting to see improvements in under a month. |

Herbs: Some herbs with natural viral suppression properties can be taken during the flu season. One that has had some success is larch (found in a Thorne product called Larix®). Elderberry extract can be used in the same way. These herbs can also be used at the onset of flu symptoms.
Tamiflu®: Upon exposure to flu, high-risk patients (the elderly, debilitated, immune compromised, asthmatics, and chemotherapy patients) are encouraged to take the drug Tamiflu® within the first 72 hours. It can sometimes lessen the severity and duration of symptoms if taken on the day of exposure. |

So reach for zinc lozenges during cold and flu season.
Nixing the Naysayers
Of course, like most natural treatments, zinc has its naysayers. One study in particular is widely touted by the antisupplement brigade as evidence that zinc has no effect on the common cold. But let's go to the videotape. Three dosages of zinc were given to subjects with colds—5 mg, 11.5 mg, and 13.3 mg. These amounts are pretty paltry; 5 mg isn't even 65 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for women, and it's less than half of what's recommended for healthy men. |

• When fighting infections you may need to take 2,000 to 3,000 mg of NAC daily. These higher dosages work best when started on the first day of the cold or flu.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Alpha-lipoic acid, which plays key roles in the production of cellular energy (see chapter 4), is also a potent and versatile antioxidant. Like NAC, it contains sulfur and is a precursor to glutathione compounds. |
| Silvio De Flora of the University of Genoa asked 262 elderly subjects to take either 600 mg of NAC or a placebo daily for six months over the wintertime cold and flu season. Although NAC did not prevent them from contracting the flu, it had a striking effect on symptoms. Of the subjects who had a laboratory-confirmed flu, only 25 percent of those taking NAC developed symptoms. In contrast, 79 percent of those taking the placebo had obvious and uncomfortable flu symptoms, according to De Flora's article in the European Respiratory Journal. |

We're also seeing research on ginseng and how ginseng extracts prevent colds and flus during the flu season. The list goes on and on.
Research is finally starting to show that diseases are not only prevented, but in many cases reversed, by consuming foods as medicine. And that's good news, because that's the kind of research that empowers people. It gives people options to taking prescription drugs and undergoing radical therapies such as chemotherapy.
So the big news in all of this is that it's all coming out, but it's just taking time. |

For reasons never stated, and with no response to Elashoff's damning analysis, the FDA approved Relenza in time for flu season in 1999. Almost immediately Elashoff's FDA career plunged. "I was told I wouldn't be doing any more advisory committee meetings, I wouldn't be working on any drugs that were quote unquote controversial. And there was the suggestion, it's probably better if you leave the division." A few months later he left the FDA for a position in a genetic research company. |

A foot-care nurse in Richmond, Massachusetts, alerted us to the potential of using Vicks to treat nail fungus. Many years ago, when
Jane Kelley, RN, first told us about using a dilute vinegar soak for nail fungus, she also mentioned that she'd heard about applying Vicks to the affected nails and the cuticle around them twice daily. If Vicks is used, it must be applied consistently, every day, until the infection clears. This may take 6 months or even longer. |

Q There are many over-the-counter cold medications available. None of them can actually cure a cold, although they can be helpful for alleviating symptoms.
Q It is unlikely that a vaccine will ever be developed to prevent the common cold because the viruses responsible have the ability to change in size and shape, and have hundreds of different forms. However, research being conducted in Britain may provide hope for cold sufferers. |

| If you can stop the virus from entering cells, it can't get to the DNA to replicate
Every fall Americans are put through the annual flu season vaccination ritual. The ritual goes like this: You go to your physician, he or she tells you that the flu can be deadly and that a flu shot will prevent it. You get the shot, feel terrible for a week, and a couple of months later, you get the flu along with everyone else. The next year rolls around and you ask yourself, should I or shouldn't I get a flu shot? |

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES
One of the great success stories of homeopathic medicine concerns its superb treatment of epidemic influenza during the 1917-18 flu season. Records maintained by government medical officers at the time show that proportionally, far fewer patients treated homeopathically died from the flu or its complications than those who received conventional medical treatment.
To decide on a homeopathic medicine when flu symptoms strike, review the remedies described in this chapter as well as those discussed in chapter 4 on colds and coughs. |

Here we were at the end of one flu season with time to try to do something before the next flu season. The obvious thing to do was to immunize everybody. But if we tried to do that, guide it, help it along, we might have to interrupt a hell of a lot of work on other diseases."
Suppose there was an influenza pandemic, the meeting participant said. An immunization program was an almost certain invitation to disaster. Those who had been unable to get the flu shots in time would be angry because they would be vulnerable. |

And when flu season rolls around we stock up on cough syrups, decongestants, or sinus-flu medications.
The pharmaceutical industry has provided us with an abundance of effective medications, and the use of these drugs saves and significantly changes many lives. In tandem with physicians who are willing to readily prescribe drugs to their patients, however, we have developed an exaggerated dependence on the use of medications. Pharmaceuticals are a booming industry, and our reliance on their medications guarantees repeat business—it's the name of the game. |
