Mahatma Gandhi once stated that: "Wherever flax seed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health."48 Flax seeds are a rich source of essential fatty acids, lignans (known for their anti-cancer properties), all the amino acids essential to health, as well as soluble fiber and insoluble fiber, both of which are so important for colon health. They also contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals. However, in order to obtain the nutritional benefits that flax seeds offer, they must be ground before they are eaten because their tough outer shells are not digestible.

Flax Seeds I have been using flax seeds and flax seed oil for a dozen years with remarkable results. Dogs accept flax oil readily, while cats seem to prefer crushed flax seeds or powder. I have used flax seeds for a number of inflammatory conditions ranging from allergies, colitis, autoimmune diseases, kidney disease, and cancers. There are no magic bullets to good heath; however, essential fatty acids from a number of sources, especially flax seeds, play an important part. Other good sources are salmon (wild), sardines, trout, halibut, deer, elk, raw milk, and raw eggs. Figure 7.

Omega-3s are plentiful in flax seeds and in flax seed oil, in fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines, and can be found in lesser amounts in walnuts, hemp seeds, green leafy vegetables, and in canola oil. flax seed oil is widely used in Europe, though it is only recently starting to become popular in the United States. flax seed oil has many advantages over fish oil. It is high in a particular type of Omega-3, ALA, which the body needs. And unlike fish oil, flax seed oil can be used in salad dressings, which provides an easy way to ingest significant doses.

Dry flax seed is easily ground using a coffee grinder or a blender. Hemp—Seeds, Oil, and Protein First of all, let's clear the air about hemp. It is not marijuana! Although both are related to the plant Cannabis sativa, industrial hemp, from which food products are produced, is very different. It contains minute (less than 1%) amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (thc), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

She recommends all women going through menopause take magnesium supplements along with flax seed.19 Up to 80% of American women experience hot flashes during menopause while only 10% of Japanese women experience that symptom. Some researchers speculate that these differences may be due to differences in diet, lifestyle, and/or cultural attitudes toward aging.20 But these suggested differences are vague and global in scope. In all likelihood the big difference is magnesium.

Firm Action flax seed Styling Gel ($10.49 for 5-1 ounces) is a standard, firm-hold styling gel that feels lighter on the hair than you might expect based on the relatively thick texture of the product. This non-flaking formula leaves hair a bit stiff and sticky, but can be easily brushed through. One caution: The henna extract has the potential to make hair feel drier with repeated use. © Infinite Hold flax seed Finishing Spray ($13.19 for 10.2 ounces) is a standard, but workable, aerosol hairspray that, despite being described as "unscented," contains fragrance.

Ground flax seeds blended with water develop a texture akin to egg whites, and, as a result, they bind the ingredients in a batter to provide a modest amount of leavening. Grind 3 tablespoons flax seeds in a blender or spice mill. If using a spice mill, transfer to a food processor or continue by hand. Add V2 cup water and blend until the mixture is slightly gummy, about 30 seconds.

Amino Acids ACETYL-CARNITINE Another nutrient, acetyl-carnitine, has been found to improve peripheral nerve function by normalizing nerve conduction. It seems to restore myoinositol levels that are depleted by sorbitol buildup. L-ARGININE Arginine is another nutrient that seems to boost insulin sensitivity, as well as cardiovascular function. One study showed that insulin sensitivity was increased by 34 percent with the use of arginine, versus 4 percent for a control group.

The omega-3 essential fatty acids are present in fish oils and in flax seed. One of the best sources is linseed oil made from flax seed. Linseed oil used to be a very popular and widely consumed oil but now is mostly available in health food stores. It is very rich in omega-3 oils, up to 60 percent. One to four tablespoonfuls per day are used. Also one may use ground flax seed as a meal, though it should be stored cold as it goes rancid very quickly. This can be added to cereal in the morning or to any food, for that matter.

The fifth reason flax seed is more propitious is that high levels of fish oil are rich in vitamins A and D, which can be toxic in high doses. Please note that the provitamin carotene, which is converted by the body to utilizable vitamin A, cannot be toxic like animal-sourced vitamin A. ALPHA LIPOIC ACID (ALA) One of the most important antioxidants, although we need a variety of them, is alpha lipoic acid. ALA helps with a variety of problems, one of which is the cardiovascular complications of diabetes having to do with small-vessel damage from inflammation.

They include linolenic acid (LNA), found in high concentrations in purslane, a green, leafy vegetable, and flax seed. Eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) are the animal omega-3 fats in fish and fish oils and organ meat. DHA is your brain's dominant fatty acid; it makes up about 40 percent of the fat in your brain. In research studies, higher levels of DHA and EPA have been associated with a lower incidence of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression, attention deficit disorder, and dementia. Omega-3 fats also improve insulin sensitivity.

The seeds we are using can be ground in a spice mill or coffee grinder and used in many recipes, or they can simply be sprinkled on top of salads or granola or even fruit. When flax seed is soaked, the soaking water becomes thick and jelly-like, providing a versatile thickening and binding ingredient for many recipes. CELTIC AND HIMALAYAN SALT Light-gray Celtic sea salt consists primarily, but not completely, of sodium and chloride (33 percent sodium and 51 percent chloride).
It is equal to flax seed as a source of short-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, most hemp seeds are irradiated upon import; however, the Tree of Life is able to supply truly live, organic hemp seeds (see the Resources directory), which we call hemp nuts. Hemp seed is great with granola, sprinkled on salads, and is especially tasty in tomato-based sauces. Hemp seed is a delicious substitute for other nuts and seeds in most any recipe. OLIVES The healthiest olives are those that are water-cured or cured in Celtic sea salt.

Gelcaps are a useful method of ingesting oily nutrients like vitamin E or oil-based supplements such as borage seed oil, flax seed oil, or evening primrose seed oil. Gelcaps are easier to swallow than capsules or tablets, but the ingredients are subjected to considerable heat during processing and the possibility that the oils can become rancid is a substantial problem. Tablets often are difficult to digest, but greater amounts of herbs and herb extracts can be squeezed into this format. Uncoated tablets are harder to swallow but are more easily digested.

COFFEE GRINDER OR SPICE MILL A coffee grinder can be used to grind whole spices, and it works perfectly for grinding your daily flax seed. A quality spice mill may be more effective for grinding hard spices to a fine powder and will simultaneously provide air-tight storage for your whole spices. In this case, purchase a spice mill for each type of whole spice you use, such as black and white peppercorns, nutmeg, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, caraway, and anise.

I have given up coffee now and have turned my coffee grinder into my flax seed grinder. I also noticed that my colon was working better while I was doing the smoothies. So, that really helped me feel less toxic as well. Eating raw is something I KNOW is the right thing to do; I just have a hard time making it happen. I think that doing the smoothies makes it easier than ever to do the raw thing and to get the nutrients that I am lacking in. My digestion is gradually improving and I did lose 2# during the month study. Not a huge weight loss, but a loss nonetheless.
