• flax oil is sold in liquid and gelatin capsules. Your greatest health benefit is from ground flaxseeds.
• Look for flax-enriched breads and cereals.
• flax oil should be kept refrigerated. Milled flax may be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 90 days, and whole flaxseed may be stored at room temperature for up to one year.
PREPARATION AND SERVING SUGGESTIONS:
• Grind flaxseeds fresh in a coffee grinder whenever possible.
• Do not cook with flax oil as it burns easily. |

Flax oil & meal
You are probably already aware that flax oil is very high in omega-3 fatty acids and is a healthy addition to any diet. You may not be aware, however, of all the ways you can use flax oil.
Blend it in with drinks or shakes. Add it to soups and sauces. Mix it in as part of virtually any recipe. Try to get at least 1 tbsp. of flax oil each day as part of your diet, and your heart and entire cardiovascular system will thank you for it.
You may also enjoy using flax meal, which has a sort of nutty flavor and can be sprinkled on top of practically any food. |

He has found that flax oil, with a ratio of 4:1, produces good results. After improvement is evident, a lower omega-3 content is recommended for the long term, since the extended use of high omega-3 oil can lead to an omega-6 deficiency. Omega-6 deficiency can produce symptoms such as, dry eyes, skipped heartbeats, painful finger joints, and fragile, thin skin. Erasmus recommends a 2:1 (omega-3 to omega-6) ratio for maintenance after the condition has been corrected or reversed.35 This can be achieved by mixing approximately three parts flax oil to one part hemp oil. |

It is known that omega-3 polyunsaturated fish or flax oil can selectively kill tumor cells by increasing oxidation while causing little or no harm to normal cells. This has been demonstrated in the laboratory many times. However, if vitamin E is added to the tumor cells after the fish or flaxseed oil is administered, it will completely block the cancer-killing effect of the oil. [Cancer Letters 98: 207-11, 1996] The addition of vitamin E to mice with tumors that are fed a fish oil diet will result in an increase in tumor growth! |

This can be achieved by mixing approximately three parts flax oil to one part hemp oil. Readers should do further research to determine the best ratio for their own situations.
Oil Supplementation
A good indicator of the need for oil supplementation is when the skin is dry. If it is dry or flaky when scratched, the body is in need of oil supplementation. Several tablespoons per day may be taken until a smooth skin is achieved again. Good oils for this use may be purchased from health-food stores. They must be kept in the refrigerator and used before their expiry dates. |

• Alcohol consumption (even moderate consumption is troublesome)
• Red meat consumption
• Lack of whole grains in the diet
• Diets containing corn oil (omega-6 oils) rather than fish oil or flax oil (omega-3 oils)
• Overconsumption of fatty foods
• Smoking tobacco
• Lack of sunshine (vitamin D)
• Environmental carcinogens

Flax provides more than oil. Flaxseed is loaded with weak estrogen-like molecules called lignans (about 1/1000th the strength of natural estrogen produced in the body). Phytoestrogens (estrogens obtained from plants) have a dual nature. Phytoestrogens normalize hormone levels. If estrogen levels are low, soy and flax molecules can act as substitutes. |

You can also use flax oil as a form of bio-diesel fuel. Right now there are diesel engines that run on vegetable oil. With a little modification, you could run them on flax oil, too. In this way, a Flax Tax could slash the cost of fuels for vehicles, drastically reduce air pollution from combustion engines, and end our dependence on foreign oil. You could just grow your own fuel in fields across the country instead of having to assault foreign nations who are obviously coveting OUR oil under THEIR sand. (The bastards...)
You see, there are many uses for the Flax Tax. |

Unrefined extra virgin olive oil is the best choice. flax oil is also good in a salad dressing, but don't cook with it because it is very heat-sensitive.
Go Wild
When choosing fresh fish, opt for wild-caught rather than farm-raised. Wild fish will have lower levels of contaminants, especially mercury, and be richer in healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids. The nonprofit Environmental Defense Organization has listed its "eco-worst" fish to eat: blue and striped marlin, swordfish, shark, Atlantic salmon, orange roughy, grouper, Chilean sea bass, and bluefin tuna. |

Dietary principles emphasizing good nutritional habits—eliminating junk foods, saturated fats, and trans fats; increasing omega-3 oils from fish, hemp oil, and flax oil; and increasing whole grains, fruits, and vegetables—provide a range of nutrients needed to prevent and treat menstrual cramps. Stress reduction can help relieve tension in the lower back and pelvic area that can worsen cramps. The flaxseed conundrum and prostate cancer
Flaxseed, flax oil and flax lignans sound like major cancer fighters, except there has been a pause in the enthusiasm for flax when it comes to prostate cancer. So much so that Harvard Men's Health Watch published a report in 2002 entitled: "Good for the heart but not for the prostate? The alpha linolenic acid dilemma. |

• You can sprinkle milled flax on cereal, salads, soups, casseroles, baked breads, and other cooked foods.
• Replace high-saturated-fat ingredients like butter with milled flax. Three tablespoons milled flax equals 1 tablespoon butter, margarine, shortening, or vegetable oil.
• Replace eggs, too! For every egg, mix 1 tablespoon milled flax with three tablespoons water in a small bowl and let sit for one or two minutes. |

Supplementation with flax oil (high in omega-3 fatty acids), hemp oil, borage oil, black current oil, and evening primrose oil (all high in linoleic acid and GLA) is one way of favorably altering the synthesis of the beneficial prostaglandins; the end result likely will be fewer uterine contractions and less menstrual pain.
As mentioned earlier, after the rise of progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle followed by its decline right before menstruation, omega-6 fatty acids, particularly arachidonic acid, are released. |

Or have oatmeal for breakfast several times a week and change the flavor each time: try adding flaxseeds (don't cook with flaxseeds or flax oil, because the high heat can damage their delicate essential fats), cinnamon (this spice actually offers great benefits for blood sugar regulation—more on this in chapter 8), berries, or chopped figs. Increasing the amount of fiber in your diet with foods and soluble fiber supplements until you reach your target should take several weeks or longer, depending on how quickly you adapt to the increase and what your current intake is. |

When I was at a discount warehouse club recently, I was looking at all these supplements – calcium, vitamin D, flax oil, cod liver oil and so on – and reading the ingredient labels, and I could only find one product that I would personally consume. Only one! I saw people buying these vitamins by the basket-load, thinking they were doing themselves some good. The only one I found that didn't have any artificial ingredients or other garbage in it was organic flax oil. Every other product offered was garbage, in my view. Nutritionally, it was a disaster. |

The best foods to get your essential fatty acids from are fish such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies as well as some plant oils such as flax oil.
There are three types of omega-3. The two you may be most familiar with are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are found primarily in oily coldwater fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel. Other than fresh-picked seaweed, which is not a staple of the American diet, plant foods rarely contain EPA or DHA. |

Take 2,000-3,000 mg of an oil that includes omega-3 fatty acids such as flax oil or fish oil. Calcium may be beneficial for women with premenstrual cramps and moodiness. Take 500 mg of calcium citrate, the most easily absorbed form of the supplement, twice a day. Also take 15 mg of zinc a day as part of a multivitamin, as it has been shown to be low in women with PMS. Take 400 IU of vitamin E mixed tocopherol, which may reduce breast tenderness and relieve PMS. |
