But new medical research is showing that fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids may be just as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs without any of the negative side effects. In this particular study, more than two thirds of study participants were able to stop using anti-inflammatory drugs and, instead, switch to fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids. Naturally, fish oils don't exhibit the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs such as increased death rates, increased risk of heart attacks, and serious neurological disorders.
Better yet, fish oils are far less expensive than prescription drugs. |

Of course, the pharmaceutical companies don't want consumers to learn the fact that fish oils can replace their expensive, patented drugs and be just as effective with none of the negative side effects. And that's partly why the public rarely hears the good news about prevention of arthritis pain with natural substances, foods, or nutritional supplements.
Had these study participants been given another powerful antioxidant -- astaxanthin -- they would likely have experienced even greater reductions in arthritis pain. |

If you have a bleeding disorder or if you are on aspirin or Coumadin or other drugs affecting your clotting, you should really only take fish oil under the close monitoring of a physician because fish oils do thin the blood. It takes several weeks to alter the fatty acid composition of the cell membranes in your brain, but some people feel the depression lift before that. Take vitamin E along with the fish oils to protect yourself from any peroxidized oils in the capsules."
Both alcoholics and chronic dieters often have depressive tendencies. Alcoholics often suffer from symptoms of low mood. |

REPPED: Interesting new research has been conducted on the health effects of fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids as alternative replacements for anti-inflammatory prescription drugs such as Vioxx and Bextra. Many people don't realize that anti-inflammatory drugs harm more than 100,000 people in the United States each year and kill 20,000 each year. According to the FDA, Vioxx alone is associated with heart attacks in more than 27,000 patients over the last several years. |

That includes people who don't get enough sunlight (or who have been brainwashed into using sunscreen all the time) and who eat atrocious diets lacking in vitamin D sources like fish oils. The problem with TB is not simply the person walking around with the bacteria, it's the people who are in such poor nutritional health that they're practically begging to be infected by something.
This is why TB is now an epidemic in the UK, by the way: There's very little sunlight at that latitude, and more than 80 percent of UK citizens are vitamin D deficient. |

Five Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids to Remember
LA: Linoleic acid. An omega-6 fatty acid found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. Given the proper conditions, the body converts LA to GLA and eventually into prostaglandin 1.
GLA: Gamma-linolenic acid. |
| Other research has shown that supplementation with fish oils is a good means of improving omega-3s in pregnant women95 and of improving the DHA status in breast milk.96
Trials on omega-3 fatty acids conducted in pregnant women have shown a significant reduction in the incidence of premature delivery.97 In one such study, fish oil was investigated for its effects on pregnancy duration, birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.98 Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation of 2.7 grams per day was compared to olive oil and/or no supplement. |
| Dietary supplementation with fish oils was tested in 42 adolescent girls with dysmenorrhea.11 The first group of 21 girls received fish oil (1,080 mg EPA and 720 mg DHA) and 1.5 mg vitamin E daily for two months, followed by a placebo for an additional two months. In the second group, 21 girls received a placebo for the first two months, followed by fish oil for two more months. At the conclusion of the study, on a 7-point scale, a score of 4 being moderately effective and a 7 meaning totally effective, 73 percent of the girls rated the supplementation greater than or equal to 4. |

| What was found was that the fish oils were able to reduce urinary calcium excretion. This work was preliminary and fundamental to understanding how EFAs and prostaglandin metabolism could affect calcium excretion and reabsorption. Although the work was undertaken in an effort to prevent kidney disease and kidney failure, it supports the idea that EFAs affect calcium metabolism and could be used to improve bone health and bone density.
The influence of dietary fats on mineral absorption is complex and only understood in part. |

These men, for example, are taking more nutritional supplements than ever before, and instead of pursuing the cheap, low-quality "bodybuilding" supplements that typify the past purchasing behavior of men, they're now consuming brain-enhancing nutrients (like bacopa, Lion's Mane, ginkgo and PS) and immune boosting nutrients (alkalizing greens, medicinal mushrooms, fish oils, etc.). They're turning away from over-processed, over-cooked and over-hyped brand-name foods and learning ways to eat more raw, organic and locally-grown produce. |

þ Consume 20 to 30 Grams of Fiber Per Day
A diet high in fiber helps prevent cancer in several ways. First, fiber-rich foods are generally low in fat and calories and are loaded with other valuable nutrients. Second, fiber has been shown to bind with cancer-causing substances in the colon, shuttling them harmlessly out of the body. |

That's why supplementing with fish oils is of huge benefit not only for heart health but also for depression, arthritis, and weight loss.8,1011 However, be aware that the content of EPA and DHA, the active ingredients in fish oil, vary widely in different brands. Look for fish oil capsules and bottled oil that is "molecularly distilled," meaning that the heavy metals that concentrate in fish fat (remember, you're what the thing you ate ate) have been removed. And stop wrinkling your nose! Modern fish oil, particularly Carlson's Norwegian Fish Oil, has absolutely no "fishy" taste. |

Studies of fish oils and fish-oil extracts in the form of pills and formulas for the prevention of heart disease have not been uniformly promising. Patients with a history of heart attack have had the best results. In the GISSI Prevenzione study, 11,000 Italian post-heart attack patients on standard medication therapy who took 850 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (present in fish oil) each day had a 45% reduction in negative cardiac-health outcomes. In another study, extracts of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids also led to a significant reduction in heart attacks in men with heart disease. |

Fish Oils
Despite the clinical utility of flaxseed oil, it is not biologically equivalent to other types of omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish.1? fish oils are preferable because they contain biologically more potent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These types of omega-3 EFAs have a wide spectrum of neurobehavioral effects,16 and might be more efficacious than flaxseed oil for the treatment of anxiety. |

We prefer fish oils to flaxseed oil, because although the body can convert alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil into the more potent molecules of EPA and DHA, it is much more efficient to use fish oils. While fish oils, rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids (omega 3 EFAs), improve insulin resistance in animal models, their effect in humans has been equivocal.145 Available human research has shown a range of outcomes regarding insulin metabolism ranging from some improvement to no change to deterioration of glycemic control in one study.
