| Whole fish and fish oil supplements both contain EPA, but it would be very difficult to get the amounts used in this study just from eating fish. If you're considering fish oil supplements, take 1,000 milligrams (1 gram) of EPA each day since that's the amount that worked best in the study. More isn't necessarily better — larger doses were actually less helpful.
Remember to talk to your doctor before taking fish oil supplements. They're naturally rich in vitamins A and D which can be toxic in large doses. |

One group of researchers from the University of Guelph in Ontario tested the combination of garlic (900 milligrams a day) with fish oil supplements (12 grams) and each alone in 50 men with moderately high blood cholesterol. They concluded that taking in garlic with fish oil favorably lowered triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. The researchers suggested that the combination reversed the moderate increase in LDL cholesterol that normally results from fish oil supplements. Synergy at work, perhaps? |

After three months, the men taking the fish oil supplements had a significant decrease in anger, which is associated with aggressive behavior. Still other research indicates that omega-3 fish oils protect brain cells from toxins. Take omega-3 fish oil capsules or liquid to achieve approximately 2,000 mg of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) daily.

• Use cold-pressed seed oils in salad dressings.
• Drink at least two quarts (64 ounces) of water a day, either pure or in diluted juices, and herbal or fruit teas.
• Minimize your intake of tea, coffee, and alcohol.
• Eat lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables—at least five servings a day.
• Take these supplements daily: a high-potency multivitamin formula, 1-3 grams of vitamin C, 30 mg of CoQ10, a probiotic supplement containing 1 billion live bacteria per dose, an antioxidant formula, and 1 gram of fish oil, twice daily. |

Whether you take fish oil supplements daily or eat fish several times per week, try to average about 650 mg of EPA and DHA per day. Specific needs for DHA increase during pregnancy (see Chapter 16). Cold-pressed sunflower, safflower, linseed and soya oils, salmon, herring and mackerel or fish oil supplements and evening primrose oil are good dietary sources of EFAs. We recommend cold-pressed oils only, as oils not labelled as refined in this way will have been extracted from their source using chemicals and are not as healthy for you. Add a selection of haricot, kidney or soya beans to your diet, and nuts such as walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts (peanuts and cashews are not as useful), for a varied combination of EFAs in your diet. |

Omega-3 fish oil supplements improve glucose tolerance, and some research suggests that they may help the body to burn fat. In recent animal experiments, docosa-hexaenoic acid (DHA), one of the key omega-3 fats, blocked the formation of fat cells while promoting the breakdown of existing fat cells. Try 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily of omega-3 fish oils or 500 to 1,000 mg daily of DHA.
Vitamin C. People need this vitamin to make carnitine, a substance that helps to transport fat into cells, where it is burned for energy. Without enough vitamin C, carnitine production slows. |

Supplementing with fish oils should be done with purified fish oil supplements, which can reduce or practically eliminate exposure to mercury, PCBs, dioxins, and pesticides. Due to how we have contaminated our ocean waters and the wildlife that inhabits these waters, high-quality fish oils supplements may in fact be a safer alternative to fish in food form and enable us to gain the benefits of omega-3s while reducing the risk of toxicity. |

The assumption is that this is due to a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids, as few women took fish oil supplements. These fatty acids have been shown to have positive effects on neurodevel-opment [18, 19], as have other nutrients found in fish, such as choline, zinc, and copper [20]. Although protective effects of other dietary components were not considered in the Australian study, there is evidence to suggest that selenium plays a protective role by reducing the bioavailability of mercury [21].

High intake of the omega-6s increases the risk of depression, whereas many studies have found that omega-3 fish oil supplements are helpful in treating depression. They also function as a mild blood thinner and a regulator of heart rhythm.
Other studies have found that the omega-3 s can help to reduce impulsive behavior, hostility, and physical aggressiveness. In a double-blind study of forty middle-aged men and women, taking 1.5 grams of DHA daily led to significant reductions in aggressive behavior toward other people in just two months. |
| Several studies have found that fish oil supplements may help in depression. These oils are rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), members of a family of healthy and essential fats. The contemporary diet is very low in these fats; this allows less healthy fats to take their place and affect brain chemistry. Try 1 to 6 grams daily.

While eating fish (preferably fatty fish) a couple times a week is a great way to achieve half a gram a day, reaching a whole gram a day may require eating foods enriched with fish omega-3s or taking fish oil supplements. And there's the rub.
According to some omega-3 experts, vitamin E isn't as critical when you get your omega-3s from natural food sources like canola oil or ground flaxseed. "No need to add vitamin E to increasing fish intakes," says Richard Deckelbaum, MD, a lipid researcher and director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University in New York. |
| In fact, the fish oil supplements now add vitamin E. The incredible dynamic between omega-3s and vitamin E is a great illustration of food synergy at work. Just like any oil, omega-3s easily combine with oxygen molecules (the process of oxidizing), rendering the fats useless to the body. Antioxidants like vitamin E step in on behalf of the omega-3s, slowing down oxidation and allowing the omega-3 s to do their good deeds longer.
This example also illustrates how dietary supplements operate differently than natural foods in the body. |
