Once you understand the economics and the motives of the parties involved here, the junk science con becomes quite obvious: Pushers of pharmaceuticals will always use dirty tricks to discredit nutritional supplements because it is in their financial interests to do so.
My own financial interests, by the way, are squeaky clean. I sell no supplements, I earn no money from supplement companies, and in fact I am not even paid by NewsTarget for my work on these articles. |

To avoid getting hoodwinked by questionable research on "vitamins," you have to strongly consider the financial interests of the source of this research. JAMA accepts millions of dollars in advertising from drug companies each year, and its pages are absolutely packed with drug ads. The American Medical Association, for its part, has long worked to discredit alternative medicine and has even been found guilty by U.S. federal courts of engaging in a conspiracy to destroy chiropractic medicine. |

Is it altruism or financial interests? Maybe it is both. Maybe this is a time in business history when being a good corporate citizen is profitable.
Amory B. Lovins writes in Scientific American that there is "more profit with less carbon." 33 He says Americans now use 47 percent less energy per dollar of economic output than they did thirty years ago, lowering our costs by $1 billion a day. This might not sound like much in today's world where our gas and electric bills are rising precipitously. |
| With financial interests in wild salmon and organic flaxseed, you might say the Barleans are trading in two of the hottest foods in America today. More and more doctors recommend that essential fatty acids be part of everybody's diet, and salmon and flax remain two of nature's richest sources of the all-important omega-3 fatty acids. Indeed, experts say that we need both salmon and flax, since each supplies a slighdy different member of the omega-3 fatty acid family, and each has its own unique health benefits. |

As it stands now, the FDA's "first and only concern" seems to be protecting the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry at seemingly any cost -- including the lives of the American citizens it is supposed to protect.
Grassley went on to say, "When the FDA approves a drug, it's considered a 'Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.' However, what's come to light about Vioxx since Sept. 30, 2006 (when Merck withdrew Vioxx from the worldwide market) makes people wonder if the FDA has lost its way when it comes to making sure drugs are safe ... |

The answer is obvious: Because the EPA mirrors the FDA in its kow-towing to the financial interests of powerful corporations, and it's far easier for the EPA to bury its head in medication-contaminated sand than to take meaningful action to protect the environment from Big Pharma.
Greenwashing is big business, and so is pushing more toxic products to consumers that they will spray on their lawns, shove down their throats, put in their cars or pee away into the sewer system. |

I believe the article you originally published in this study may have been based on an erroneous press release issued by the AMA which, in my opinion, distorted the findings of the study and presented a biased position that happens to coincide with the financial interests of drug companies - a primary source of revenue for the AMA.
By reprinting the AMA's conclusions without fact checking your article, you have made a classic journalism error and likely played into the hands of an organization that has a long history of discrediting natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. |

Senate sellout of the American public to the financial interests of powerful pharmaceutical companies.
Byron Richards, author of Fight For Your Health! The FDA's betrayal of America, has been closely monitoring events relevant to S.1082. NewsTarget has published his updates as they are made available. Here's the latest update from Richards based on events on the U.S. Senate floor from May 7th and May 8th.
S.1082 update from Byron Richards
The Senate finished debate Tuesday on S.1082. Dorgan offered a new Amendment to add true anti-counterfeit technology to the bill. |

I sell no supplements, I earn no money from supplement companies, and in fact I am not even paid by NewsTarget for my work on these articles. In terms of potential conflicts of interest, I have far more credibility than the AMA, a shady organization that remains mired in blatant conflicts of interest and a frightening agenda of pushing drugs, surgery and radiation onto as many Americans as possible.
Now, here's a common sense way to quickly realize the JAMA research is complete nonsense. |

Three, people have a habit of taking the path of least resistance, which is often the path of greatest convenience. When we're stressed and short of time—or just plain lazy—it's easier to buy and eat processed, packaged, and less nutritious foods than it is to shop for or make a healthier meal. Related to this, we also tend to be creatures of habit. |

The definition, diagnosis and treatment of illness are neutral and objective, unaffected by moral or subjective judgments, or by personal cultural or financial interests. Expertise takes on the highest value, which inevitably means that the physician knows best.
The medical model accounts for, defines, and treats various and sundry human conditions as disease. Over time, more of life's experiences come under medicine's attention. Excessive drinking, treated with powerful pharmaceuticals, is a good example of a behavior that has in recent years been defined as a disease that needs a cure. |

But that's not what you hear in this country, because that's a message that really doesn’t serve the financial interests of any company. It only helps individuals, and it's frankly not in the financial interests of large companies to make individuals healthier.
Public health isn't the goal of the pharmaceutical industry - the goal is to sell more drugs. And if that means hyping up drugs that are potentially dangerous while being simultaneously quite profitable, then that's exactly what they're going to do. Big Pharma has proven that time and time again, that that's exactly what they will do. |

And certainly few who know anything about health would trust the health judgment of the government where health policies are driven by the financial interests of Big Pharma and big business rather than legitimate public health concerns.
The libertarian argument has yet another important point to consider, and that is the effectiveness of government regulation on the sale of nicotine products. Suppose the government banned nicotine -- would that mean that nicotine products would vanish over night, and no one would have access to them? Of course not! |

It has largely been concealed to protect either the financial interests of certain corporations or the ego interests of certain individuals or scientific groups.
In the world of so-called "evidence-based medicine," the defenders of conventional medicine, which include the American Medical Association, medical schools and conventionally trained doctors, also want to protect their territory. They want to remain in control over all medical decisions and health-related interactions with patients. Yet, they have very few qualifications for actually doing so. |

The bottom line? This study was poorly designed, poor followed, and ultimately comes up as junk science. Yet it's being touted by pharmaceutical-funded newspapers and media outlets around the world as an "A-ha!" moment, proving that calcium supplements and vitamin D supplements are useless. Faced with this information, what should consumers do now? Take more drugs, no doubt. |

Perhaps more disconcerting, the majority of clinical trial research reported in the journals is funded by drug company money, and the financial interests of the researchers involved are not fully acknowledged.24
In the past couple of years there have been well-publicized scandals at major medical centers that confirm these charges. In one instance, a scientist's integrity was maligned in a variety of ways by both a drug company and her university administration after she found that a drug under study had strong side effects and it lost its effectiveness. |

The FDA routinely practices censorship to protect the financial interests of drug companies, for example. Because common knowledge of simple, non-patentable remedies would put Big Pharma out of business. (Sunlight prevents breast cancer, for example. Sea salt prevents arthritis. Blueberries lower cholesterol. Pomegranates and zinc prevent prostate cancer. Etc.)

And, of course, the tremendous financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry and the "sick care" industry (also known as the healthcare industry) all have a vested interest in making sure that doctors treat diseases with extremely expensive prescription drugs and high profit medical procedures rather than low-cost substances like water.
This is an important point: there's no money in the treatment of disease with water, so there's no motivation for any organization whatsoever to reveal the truth about the role of water in preventing chronic disease in human beings. |

At the top, there would be reform of the FDA, and we would create a true Department of Health that is actually interested in promoting health, and not just promoting the financial interests of politically powerful drug companies and food corporations.
We've got to sever the corrupt connection between government and industry, and create some honest regulatory agencies that are actually going to do something to protect the consumer. Today, we are far from that. In fact, it's nowhere in sight. |

Are they more interested, for example, in labeling and selling their product and making money, or are they more interested in the quality of the product? Katherine Eban: I really think the financial interests involved for years—from the middlemen, the wholesalers, the drug companies, and even the pharmacy chains—have conspired to keep this quiet. And patients as a result don't know. But my hope is that once patients really understand that nobody in their government can tell them where their medicine has been, they're going to want change. They're going to want legislation that's going to help track the medicine at every point in the supply chain. They're going to demand that. |

But over time, as with many regulatory bodies, the FDA gradually became the promoter of the industry it was supposed to regulate, and its original mission of protecting the public was replaced with a desire to promote and protect the financial interests of the nation's most powerful corporations: drug companies.
This shift was due in part to the 1992 introduction of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), which allowed the FDA to collect "user fees" from pharmaceutical companies in exchange for reviewing their drugs. |

It is not in the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry to prevent common diseases—the maintenance and expansion of disease is a precondition for the financial growth of this industry.
1. The pharmaceutical industry is an investment industry driven by the profits of its shareholders. Improving human health is not the driving force of this industry.
2. The pharmaceutical investment industry was artificially created and strategically developed over an entire century by the same investment groups that control the global petrochemical and chemical industries. |

It's yet more evidence backing up my long-standing condemnations of the FDA as a mob-like drug racket agency that distorts the truth, lies to the public, defends dangerous prescription drugs, works to promote the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies and essentially ends up killing hundreds of thousands of Americans each year because of its unwillingness to perform its regulatory mission. This survey also reveals that it is not entirely accurate to speak of the FDA as one single-minded organization. |
