The coming financial collapse of the U.S. government: Fed papers reveal what's in store for Americans

The result of this is not in question: The United States government is already running on fumes, and in a few more years, it will suffer financial collapse. "Countries can and do go bankrupt," says Kotlikoff, and the U.S. is no exception to the laws of economic reality. Oblivious to what's coming The American people, as usual, remain oblivious to the financial future that awaits them. Even as the housing bubble is now beginning to burst in the nation's most overpriced real estate markets, most people don't have a clue what "hard times" really means.

Also check out the book Empire of Debt, which earns my top recommendation for the best book available on the coming financial collapse of America. I haven't even mentioned peak oil yet, by the way. Uncontrolled federal spending, encouraged by voters, to drive U.S. government into bankruptcy

This is why I honestly believe -- and this is not an exaggeration by any means -- that every democracy is ultimately doomed to financial collapse. When you put the recipients of the spending in charge of voting on spending decisions, the long-term result can only be catastrophe. This is especially true when you consider that most people tend to think in terms of what's in it for them rather than what's good in the long-term for the country, or the fiscal health of the next generation.
In fact, for decades, Republicans and Democrats alike have been competing with each other just to see who can create the most voter entitlements while accelerating the nation toward financial collapse. So far, the Republicans are winning by a long shot. President Bush has put the nation in deeper debt than any president in history, and there always seems to be another excuse to justify even more deficit spending. There are all sorts of crises that can be sold to the voters as a reason for more spending.

Fiscal sanity and financial stability are always preferred over financial collapse and radical reforms. But an honest assessment of current behavior by lawmakers and bureaucrats leaves little hope that this solution will emerge. In fact, current behavior indicates that our nation is going to spend itself into oblivion and then dump the whole mess onto the lap of taxpayers who will, of course, lose everything. It's yet another con being perpetrated on the American people, mostly without their knowledge.

United States fails national IQ test

In time, that void will be matched by the financial collapse of a government so deeply in debt that no candidate dare mention the issue. No voter wants to hear the cold fact that every man, woman and child in the U.S. owes more than $25,000 to foreign investors who keep the U.S. economy running on financial fumes. The national debt has become the black sheep issue that both candidates agreed to avoid. Thus, the debate topics like Iraq served primarily as diversions to prevent the population from realizing that our own nation's financial foundation is rapidly deteriorating.
