Then about 150 years ago, as people found that they could use wood fibers, and the technology came along to use soft wood fibers or hard wood fibers, it kind of disappeared for a while because of the economics. Now, especially in Southeast Asia and China, it's coming back very strong. China has enacted laws against what they call "light pollution" of products such as styrofoam. Manufacturers go out and find alternate products. This is one of them. This product has been on the market in Asia and in Europe for about 12 years. |
| Normally, this fiber was just burned in the fields, but now we source in Southeast Asia, where they are using this as a replacement for regular wood fibers and styrofoam.
We make it into a molded product, for disposable paper plates, bowls, pizza containers, and supermarket trays. It's very easily renewable; sugar cane is a tropical grass that renews itself about every 12 months for harvest, so we use zero wood pulp. So the trees that are in use can be diverted to more traditional uses, such as for forest or for long-term use like lumber products instead of easily disposed products. |

Collagen fibers are composed of collagen fibrils, assemblies of molecules secreted outside of specialized connective tissue cells, called fibroblasts. Taken as a whole, the connective tissue system is the largest organ of the body.
Below the skin and superficial fascia are the ligaments (white areas)
Yet the simplicity and ubiquity of the connective tissue system masks an important characteristic: connective tissue fibers are arranged in highly regular arrays. There is a name for a highly regular parallel array of molecules, whether it's in liquid or solid form: it's called a crystal. |

| But there can be great differences between fibers within those families. Some fibers are soluble, some insoluble— insoluble fiber is believed to have the protective effect—and studies generally do not distinguish between the two, he explains.
"Doing research in this area is difficult, and part of the problem has been people making too-optimistic or too-rapid decisions based on studies that have not been definitive," he adds.
Fiber is just a word. It's such a broad term that it is not helpful.

In the 1930s it was known that inhaling asbestos fibers leaves telltale scars that could be seen on primitive x-rays as strangely scarred, a grayed matter within the lungs that looked very different from normal lung tissue. Years later, electron microscopes would provide stunning images, showing this dull, fibrous material to be the accumulated residues of asbestos dust. Asbestos fibers inflame the lung, sending white blood cells called macrophages to try to get rid of the unwelcome foreign bodies. |

There are many companies that offer bedding products made without toxic flame-retardant chemicals, using naturally flame-retardant fibers instead. Hastens is one such company, but they may be too expensive for some. You can start by purchasing a natural mattress cover that fits snugly over your current mattress and that will help prevent the off-gassing from passing through. Use hypoallergenic pillows filled with natural fibers like cotton, wool, and feathers.

Take inventory of your closet and clear out clothes made of unnatural fibers. Make a mental note to avoid buying clothes that require dry cleaning. Choose natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, and hemp. When you do choose to dry-clean certain pieces, let them aerate outside for a day before placing them in your closet or wearing them. (And be sure to remove any plastic covering from the cleaners!)

Spun soy protein fibers are not much different from plastic fibers; both are difficult to digest, have a "scouring effect" on the GI tract and cause marked amounts of flatulence.39
For chunkier, less well-defined fibers, processors prefer the textured soy protein (TSP) extrusion process discussed earlier. The synthetic meat business has cooked up many variations on these basic processes and can turn out soy protein in sheets, strings, chunks, granules, and gels. SPI products work well functionally, and so are used heavily by food processors to improve texture, retain moist-

They found that the brains of the patients who had taken anticholinergic drugs for two years or longer had more than twice the level of abnormal clumps of amyloid plaque and tangled bundles of fibers as those who had not taken the drugs or had taken them for a short time. Such plaque and tangled fibers in the brain are considered the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.
Doctors have found that this medication-induced dementia often reverses if it is found and the patient stops taking the offending drug. But how many people never learn that it was their medicine that took their minds away? |

Using medical imaging equipment and an elaborate system of fiber classification, they were able to catalog and name over two hundred types of microscopic fibers found in the canvas. With this knowledge, the doctors were certain they now understood art. They knew the fiber structure of the canvas and the chemical composition of the inks. What more could art be made of?
Armed with this new scientific knowledge of art, they gathered enormous samples of all the fibers, chemicals and inks now known and combined them in a giant mass of ink colors and canvas fibers.
Only it still wasn't art. |

Plant fiber can be divided into three different types: cereal fibers, vegetable fibers, and fruit fibers. A person consuming whole foods need not worry very much about adding additional fiber to the diet, but a person living primarily on overly processed foods will probably experience health problems due to fiber deficiency.
Constipation
Constipation, sometimes alternating with diarrhea, is the hallmark of a low-fiber diet. In constipation, bowel movements occur less frequently than one per day with stools that are hard, small in volume, and require much effort to expel. |

The result is a buildup of fast-twitch muscle fibers, which adds power to their movements. Also, recruiting new muscle fibers enhances your metabolism overall, and your body retains the improved ability to burn fat and carbohydrates after the interval training.
Normally HGH stays in the bloodstream only a few minutes, but a session of sprinting can keep the level elevated for up to four hours. In the brain, HGH balances neurotransmitter levels and boosts the production of all the growth factors I've mentioned. |

This progressive, degenerative disease involves the gradual loss of the myelin sheath that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers in the body. With the loss of the myelin, the nerve fibers become scarred, disrupting communication between the brain and other parts of the body. While the cause of MS is not known, some researchers believe that it is an autoimmune disorder. |

Insoluble fiber such as wheat bran, corn bran, and vegetable fibers increases the volume and viscosity of foods and moderately reduces the glycemic impact of carbohydrates. Soluble fibers such as oat bran, psyllium, and legume fiber, on the other hand, absorb more water and tend to have a greater influence on a food's volume, viscosity, and glycemic impact. Eating an abundance of fiber-rich foods, especially those high in soluble fiber, is central to the success of the Hunger Free Forever program. |

We must consider another aspect of air pollution: the occupational exposure to mineral dust such as asbestos fibers. The addition of iron-containing fibers in asbestos can generate even more free radicals. Long-term exposure has been shown to cause lung cancer and interstitial fibrosis (a serious scarring of the lung). There are many other occupational hazards: Farmers are exposed to the fine dust in their barns and grain bins. Industrial workers are exposed to various chemicals and fine dust in their work.
Needless to say, the quality of the air we breathe is a major health consideration. |

What they have found is that certain fibers, when combined, actually synergize and multiply each others effects. Thus, specific fiber combinations, gram for gram, may exert health effects equivalent to larger gram quantities of similar fibers when consumed alone.
Although there are many varieties of soluble fiber, a completely novel blend known as PolyGlycopleX (PGX) is the most viscous and soluble fiber ever discovered. |

The projection of the lower level nerve fibers from the thalamus, limbic, and brainstem areas could connect up at the prefrontal areas. The message of pain/feeling was then spread to both sides of the brain.
One reason for the evolution of the left frontal cortex was to produce a brain system that could distance itself from the other areas of the nervous system where painful feelings lie—a way of not being overwhelmed by what lay below so that we can get on with life and deal with daily problems. It is a system that can bolster defenses and keep us out of inordinate pain. |

SPINNING DOPE
SPI is often spun into protein fibers using technology borrowed from the textile industry. The only difference is that fat, flavor, color and fiber-binding agents are incorporated into the fibers during processing. This process—introduced in 1957—involves preparing a protein solution with a soy protein content of 10 to 50 percent at a very alkaline pH that is above 10. The solution is aged at about 121 degrees F until it becomes as viscous as honey at which point it is called "spinning dope. |

The brain, "knowing" that connection is overwhelming, seems to retrench, pulling back its nerve fibers from locking in. The distance between experience and its awareness becomes more distant, and we have a wider "Janovian Gap."
Lack of connection and/or integration ultimately means a disintegration of mental and physical systems. If the energy of early trauma is powerful enough, its spread is broad, and the symptoms more serious. When the pain is early and catastrophic, chances are it will lead to symptoms that are equally catastrophic. |
| When cognitive therapists treat depression as something about wrong ideas, they do not see the long fibers from the depths of the brain reaching up from the brainstem to shape current attitudes and moods. They do not see the memory of early lack of love and traumas stored in pristine, crystal form, cloistered together behind a barrier of neuroinhibitors, terrified of leaving the cloister and venturing into a world of awareness, unchanged despite all of our later experience. They do not see desperate need pleading for fulfillment and the agony of the lack of that fulfillment. |
| With early trauma, the corpus callosum suffers, and its fibers are thinned out and rendered less efficient by fewer connecting nerve cells. With fewer nerve cells, this bridge impedes the right brain and left brain from interacting normally. For instance, premature birth can enfeeble the corpus callosum so that later there is effectively a disconnect. Other early trauma tends to prune the cells literally, creating a bad connection; one side can't hear the other and has no idea what it is trying to say. |

It blocks the transmission of impulses in nerve fibers that carry pain signals, and it decreases pain by changing collagen linkages, which reduces scar tissue. Studies in laboratory animals showed less degenerative change of knee joints in those whose diet included MSM. MSM also increases the effectiveness, but not the amount, of Cortisol, the body's anti-inflammatory hormone, and inhibits the production of fibroblasts, compounds which cause swelling. And finally, MSM also binds to fluid in swollen tissue and helps to remove it. |
