According to the National Center for Health Statistics, a 42 percent jump in fertility problems was reported between 1982 and 1995.
Women in the prime of their childbearingyears aren't the only ones having trouble with fertility. Studies are now pouring out of various institutions showing connections between exposure to toxins and male infertility as well. Sperm rates have fallen in much of the industrialized, Western world. They've declined more so in places where pesticides are prominent, and male infertility reports are mounting like never before. |

One well-documented example is the role of flavonoids in fertility: while a few flavonoid-deficient plants are able to germinate, grow, and set fertile seed,
239 most plants require flavonoids for fertility and normal pollen development. Another is flavonoid modulation of auxin transport as well as localized auxin accumulations observed during nodulation. |

HOMEOPATHY
>w The causes of infertility can be diverse and complex in nature, and are best ^^^^W treated by an experienced homeopathic practitioner. Ideally treatment ¦ 1 should begin for both partners after the appropriate medical tests have been carried out to determine if a mechanical impediment to conception exists. This will allow a homeopath to prescribe as appropriately as possible to treat individual situations. |

Stress can lead to infertility and affect the success of fertility treatments. Women who report high levels of stress at the outset of fertility treatments had fewer eggs retrieved and fertilized, compared with women who expressed optimism that they would become pregnant.9
Prenatal stress can cause learning problems and brain deficits. |

Sexual development and fertility are normal. Affected subjects are hyperphagic and have increased linear growth, similar to what occurs in heterozygous Mc4r-deficient mice. MC4/v-deficient humans also have increased lean mass and bone mineral density and mild central hypothyroidism. Female haploinsufficiency13 carriers are heavier then male carriers in their families, a pattern also seen in Mc4r-deficient mice. These data are strong evidence for dominantly inherited obesity, not associated with infertility, because of haploinsufficiency mutations in MC4R. |

For example, fertility specialists have demonstrated that in-vitro fertilization is not likely to work in the presence of high leptin, indicating a clear leptin resistance preventing pregnancy from occurring.556
These findings are consistent with other research showing that leptin in fluids reflecting ovarian status were high, even though blood levels were normal in unexplained fertility. There is a female organ leptin resistance that is central to the problem of infertility.557
In fact, a certain amount of leptin must exist, along with estrogen, in order for pregnancy to begin. |

How well do fertility treatments really work? (Probably not as well as fertility clinics advertise.) What's the most effective way to bring down skyrocketing rates of diabetes? New drugs? Screening people for high blood sugar? Sending patients to weight-loss clinics? Does fetal monitoring reduce the risk of a bad outcome during childbirth, or just increase the chances of a Caesarean section? Does screening for prostate cancer with the PSA test save lives? If prostate cancer is found, which treatment is best? |

Two basic types of problems can interfere with fertility: structural problems (e.g., damaged fal-lopian tubes) or functional problems (e.g., an H irregular menstrual cycle).
"By needling certain points on the meridians |jj you can influence and rebalance the endocrine and hormonal system," says Cindy Lawrence, LAc, a licensed acupuncturist who also holds a master's degree in oriental medicine. Andro can cause a loss of fertility and other side effects similar to those of the other anabolic steroids.
Testosterone and its precursors and derivatives are anabolic steroids that promote the buildup of muscle mass. Testosterone is used to treat decreased libido and to increase muscle mass in athletes. Taking testosterone supplements, however, can actually depress libido, and shuts off sperm production, causing infertility that can take months to recover from. In some cases recovery does not occur. Testosterone also leads to psychiatric side effects, including suicide. |

| It's the men who eat barbequed ribs, pizza, fried foods and processed foods that end up firing blanks at the fertility center or having prostate cancer surgery (which leaves you in a state that can hardly be called "manly," by the way). Processed foods devastate reproductive capacity in both men and women, and from a medical viewpoint, nothing takes away the manliness of men faster than following a diet of processed foods. Except, perhaps, surgical castration. But nutritional castration is the next quickest route. |

For all we know, Ritalin might stunt the size of the reproductive organs of these children, too, leading to future fertility problems. Perhaps the "Ritalin generation" won't be able to have babies. This is just a guess, but the important point here is that the psychiatric industry is guessing, too. Nobody knows. Long-term testing has not been done. It's all basically a "let's give these drugs to children and see what happens" experiment. |

Throughout history, the egg has been used to symbolize everything from fertility to nobility. Domesticated chickens can be traced back to 3200 b.c. in India. Full-blown egg production in the Middle East and Asia began as early as 3,500 years ago. Eggs were brought to the Western world in the fifth century a.d. Several hundred years later eggs were added to the list of foods not eaten during Lent because they were seen as luxurious. On Easter, people were allowed to begin eating eggs again, which explains their importance and popularity on that holiday.

But the biggest surprise was what they found in two-year-old Rowan: higher levels of flame retardant chemicals than had been found in nearly anyone else in the world — six times higher than the levels found in his parents, and twice the levels at which researchers start to see impaired fertility in male rats. "This is a very serious warning of very small children being heavily exposed," said Aake Bergman, professor of environmental chemistry at Stockholm University in Sweden, one of the world's foremost experts on human exposure to fire retardant chemicals. |
| There is an emerging pandemic of endocrine disorders in the Northern hemisphere," Colborn said at a recent conference about the links between chemical exposures and reproductive health and fertility.16

• Chemical exposure can impact the hormonal system and disrupt normal development at doses far lower than previously suspected.17
• Genes and chemicals can work together to cause disease. |

But some people do have one or more extra breasts—medically called polymastia. Also known as supernumerary breasts, they can come with or without nipples and areolae. (See Triple Nipples, below.) Most often these mammary marvels are not noticed until puberty, when they start to develop in response to sex hormones. |
