Only when excessive amounts of cholesterol-based stones (85-95 percent cholesterol), or other clumps of fat, block the bile ducts of the liver may an ultrasound test reveal what is generally referred to as "fatty liver." In such a case, the ultrasound pictures reveal a liver that is almost completely white (instead of black). A fatty liver can gather up to 20,000 stones before it succumbs to suffocation and ceases to function.
If you had a fatty liver and went to the doctor, she would tell you that you had excessive fatty tissue in your liver. |

A person who has fat in the liver but no inflammation or liver damage is said to have a "fatty liver"; this condition can progress to cirrhosis, which is characterized by a liver that is permanently damaged, scarred, and no longer able to work properly.)

NASH affects 2 to 5 percent of Americans. An additional 10 to 20 percent of Americans have fat in their liver, but no inflammation or liver damage, a condition called "fatty liver. |

Being overweight or obese in childhood increases a person's risk of developing allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, and fatty liver. In fact, fatty liver, in which fat deposits on the liver impair its function and blood-sugar regulation, has become the most common physical abnormality in children and adolescents.
Researchers have projected that one of every three people born since the year 2000 will eventually develop diabetes. |

OBESITY AND FATTY LIVER: A study using mice fed high-fat diets and varying amounts of raspberries discovered that raspberries helped prevent and improve fatty liver and also reduced obesity.
Tips on Using Raspberries
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• Avoid spoilage by making sure there are no signs of moisture and that they are not packed too tightly.
• Remove any berries that are spoiled or moldy, and place the unwashed berries back into their original container.
• Raspberries will keep fresh in the refrigerator for about two days. |

RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH INSULIN RESISTANCE
The risks associated with insulin resistance are considerable and include diabetes, heart disease, stroke, polycystic ovary syndrome, fatty liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatosis (fatty inflammation of the liver), and sleep apnea. The risk of developing these conditions can be significantly reduced if you take the steps outlined in part II of this book. Compared with people who do not have insulin resistance, people with this problem are exposed to increased cardiovascular risk. |

Even if the early stages of a fatty liver or gallstone formation in the bile ducts were easily recognized and diagnosed, today's medical facilities offer no treatments to relieve this vital organ of the heavy burden it has to carry.
The presence of gallstones in the liver can easily be verified by anyone suffering from a chronic illness, including those whose gallbladder has been removed. By performing a liver flush, the body will release plenty of non-calcified, bile-coated stones. These stones are identical to the green non-calcified stones found in a surgically removed gallbladder. |

The condition known as fatty liver (Steatosis), usually due to alcohol consumption, can increase liver weight, as can hepatitis. Unfortunately, since no detailed analysis of the liver and no follow-up studies were conducted, the cause of the weight gain remains speculative.
That researchers did not undertake additional studies to verify the cause of the rats' heavier livers is a dangerous omission. If the condition had been created by a fat-soluble compound that is present in canola oil, it might adversely affect liver function in humans.

This can lead to a condition known as "fatty liver." Choline is needed for liver health and liver damage results from deficiency.
Some choline is oxidized in the body to a metabolite known as betaine. Betaine supplies methyl groups for various methylation reactions. One of these methylation reactions results in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine.
No RDA has been set for choline, but the adequate daily intake (AI) has been set at 550 mg for men and 425 mg for women. Average dietary intake is thought to be adequate. |

We live in a drug-oriented society, where pills are routinely sold, prescribed, and assumed to solve our problems, from heartburn to erectile dysfunction. Little wonder, then, that many people are easily lured into abusing alcohol, street drugs, and prescription medicines. |

Many overweight individuals develop what is known as a fatty liver or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and as a result show signs of a sluggish liver resulting in a sluggish metabolism.
As you lose weight, it is very important to support liver function. The best way to support the liver is to avoid putting undue stress on it while simultaneously providing the key nutritional building blocks that it needs to function properly. |

Human dietary requirements for choline have been studied in subjects fed low choline diets under controlled conditions; they develop reversible fatty liver as well as liver and muscle damage [58, 59]. These clinical outcomes are associated with increased apoptosis in lymphocytes [60]. Premenopausal women were less likely to develop organ dysfunction when fed a low-choline diet than were men or postmenopausal women, because estrogen induces the gene that makes endogenous synthesis of choline possible (phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase gene [PEMT]). |

Blood sugar problems (both hypoglycemia and adult-onset diabetes) are common in those with a fatty liver; so are depression, brain fog, indigestion, constipation, bloating, recurrent infections, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and more.
Since the liver is our central line of defense against toxins, when it is overworked, an extra load is placed upon our other organs of detoxification. That extra load is passed from one organ system to another until either detoxification occurs, enabling the body to regain balance, or degeneration sets in. |

Additional medical and psychosocial concerns associated with childhood overweight include asthma, sleep-disordered breathing, fatty liver disease, depression, low self-esteem, and social stigma [34, 35].
Obesity and overweight are multidetermined chronic problems resulting from complex interactions between genes and an environment characterized by energy imbalance due to sedentary lifestyles and ready access to an abundance of food [36]. Research suggests that obesity runs in families and that some individuals are more vulnerable than others to weight gain and developing obesity [37]. |

An additional 10 to 20 percent of Americans have fat in their liver, but no inflammation or liver damage, a condition called "fatty liver." NASH ranks as one of the major causes of cirrhosis in America, behind hepatitis C and alcoholic liver disease.
"Doc, I don't drink alcohol. I don't even smoke." And some of these patients are children—about one in ten kids are showing signs of being an alcoholic. But clearly they aren't drinkers. After careful examination, the doctor has a diagnosis: nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH. |
| About one in ten children today show signs of a fatty liver, which is also attributed to rising levels of obesity. This condition is reversible through diet and lifestyle changes.
CHAPTER 10
DETOXIFICATION AND YOUR HEALTH
It's no surprise that detoxification has become a prominent treatment as people have become more aware of pollution, both in the general environment and from things like consumer products and common householdcleaning agents. It is estimated that one in every four Americans suffers from some level of heavy metal poisoning. |

Even if the early stages of a fatty liver or gallstone formation in the bile ducts were easily recognized and diagnosed, today's medical facilities offer no treatments to relieve this vital organ of the heavy burden it has to carry.
Most people in the developed world have accumulated hundreds and, in many cases, thousands of hardened bile and fat deposits in the liver. These stones continuously block the liver's bile ducts, which greatly stresses this vital organ and the rest of the body. |

The body's final attempt to stay alive consists of accommodating more and more cholesterol in the bile ducts and tissue of the liver, which leads to an enlarged, fatty liver, and of sticking as much cholesterol as possible on the damaged walls of the arteries.
In many cases, the liver's sinusoids become so congested with proteins that they do not even allow enough water and sugar to reach the liver cells. As a result, many of the liver cells simply die off. The dead liver cells are replaced with fibrous tissue, leading to portal hypertension, diabetes and, possibly, liver failure. |
