Optional Brief Fast with Juice
I get a lot of questions about fasting, and how one can best reap the benefits of fasting for cleansing and detox purposes. You might not expect some of the reasoning behind being extremely careful about fasting, however.
Foods such as fatty meats, white flour, sugar, and dairy products can clog channels of elimination. There are also foods that build (make us stronger and more resilient), those that cleanse (relieve the toxic burden), and those that both cleanse and build. Proteins, such as meat and eggs, are the major builders. |

We put all those together, and that's live foods and fasting; fasting clears the brain. There was research done in Russia with schizophrenics, incurable schizophrenics, and they water fasted them. I don't do a lot of water fasting here, but they water fasted them for 28 days, and in Russia they don't have supplements.
Mike: You do juice fasting here, so people know.
Cousens: Yes, and what happened was that 65 percent of the incurable schizophrenics started functioning normally. The only time they relapsed was when they ate meat. |

To test the hypothesis that exposure to cadmium is associated with impaired fasting glucose and Type II diabetes, we examined the associations between urinary cadmium and the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes) and diabetes in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). In this large cross-sectional study, urinary cadmium levels are significantly and dose-dependently associated with both impaired fasting glucose and diabetes. |

When I speak on fasting at the Bragg Health Crusades worldwide, I ask my students how many of them have supervised their own fasts. I found that thousands of Bragg followers have fasted 20 and 30 days or more with great results!
But, I still feel that if a person is going to take a 30 day fast, it should be under the guidance of a health expert, who knows how to control long fasts. They are always ready to help you when the toxic poisons are being eliminated more heavily. |

In addition to chromium, which improves glucose tolerance, decreases fasting blood sugar, and has been shown to help insulin resistance in people with diabetes, two other supplements may be helpful. Though not normally thought of as the first nutrient you'd take for PCOS, biotin in high doses (8 to 16 mg) should be considered because it has the potential to be of great help in normalizing and lowering blood sugar.
And then there's fenugreek, an herb that also has a beneficial effect on blood sugar. It reduces fasting blood glucose (blood sugar) when used at the dosage of 1. |

That is the very reason why fasting is not popular. Humans are creatures of strong habits. Most people automatically eat 3 or more meals every day and not because they have earned their food with physical activity. They have been brainwashed to believe everyone should eat at certain hours for regular mealtimes.
Patricia and I had the pleasure of staying at the fabulous Mauna Kea Hotel, on the Island of Hawaii. It's an American-plan hotel, which means the cost per day for your room includes meals. Breakfast started at 7:30 am, luncheon began at 12:30 pm and dinner at 7 pm. |
| How to Gain Weight Using a Scientific fasting Program
Thin people fight frantically to gain and hold a few pounds. Gaining weight becomes an obsession with the underweight person and they are most susceptible to all kinds of weight-gaining diets. Underweight people have come to me in a frustrated and emotional condition, begging me to help them put a few pounds on their spare frames. Most of them were cold constantly ... even on the warmest summer days they wore sweaters and heavy garments! |

Does fasting cleanse the body?"
Fasting is also a "stress." Proponents claim that fasting cleanses the body. In one sense, they are quite right. fasting does cleanse the body, but it doesn't clean out all those unnamed toxins they've dreamed up. Instead, fasting cleans out all the amino acids. If you don't eat, the amino acid pool is diminished, robbing tissues of their ability to repair.
You may conclude from all this that you need to eat extra protein, but as the two prior chapters have pointed out, most diets have more than enough protein. |

There are two types of nondrug-related hypoglycemia: fasting and reactive. fasting hypoglycemia is usually related to an underlying disease or disorder. Reactive hypoglycemia is marked by symptoms that develop three to five hours after meals and are relieved by eating, and is not related to any undeilying disorder.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include one or more of the following: anxiety, irritability, headache, depression, trembling, excessive sweating, palpitations, confusion, double vision, weakness, bizarre behavior, incoherent speech, and convulsions. |

In fact, if I had only one blood test to choose to determine the best shot at longevity, a fasting insulin level is the one I would choose because insulin holds the key to most chronic diseases. As a growth hormone, if elevated, insulin stimulates the growth of cancer cells, thickening of the linings of blood vessels and joints, and acceleration of all aging processes, to say nothing of directing your body to manufacture fat. My advice: ask your doctor for a fasting insulin test, as recommended earlier; then follow my program to get it as low as possible. |

When traveling all over the world lecturing, I find that at times I can't get all the organic fruits and vegetables that I normally eat, so I put my faith in fasting for my internal purification.
The treatment of diseases should go to the root cause, and most often it is found in severe dehydration from lack of sufficient pure, distilled water, plus an unhealthy lifestyle!

A series of liver cleanses that releases all stones is one of the most thorough ways to deal with them. fasting with only water for 3-5 days has also been shown to pacify Candida overgrowth, but fasting this long may be difficult for many people, especially if they are Vata types. Once the food source (toxic waste) is reduced, the yeast bacteria will soon begin to withdraw to their original sites and diminish.
Along with liver flushing, a diet consisting of foods that cause the least amount of digestive trouble and toxicity is able to restore the intestinal flora. |

During fasting, it is also helpful to have an enema each day to remove toxins and prevent their resorption into the blood, organs, and tissues. The use of colonic irrigations would be even more effective. (SeeAppendix5: How to Use a Water Enema.)
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juices
Excellent results can be achieved by combining fasting with the consumption of raw, freshly made fruit and vegetable juices, while keeping citrus juices, except for lemon first thing in the morning, to a minimum. (See the section on juicing in chapter 21). |

Water from chemically treated public water systems and even from wells and springs is likely to be loaded with poisonous chemicals and toxic trace elements. Depending upon the kind of piping that the water has been run through, the water in our homes and offices, schools, hospitals, etc., is likely to be overloaded with zinc (from old-fashioned galvanized pipes) or with copper and cadmium (from copper pipes). |
| Take the Mucus Test
I feel that fasting has done a great deal to eliminate the mucus from my body. I faithfully live on a mucusless diet and always take my weekly 24 hour fast to help keep any mucus and toxins that I may have accumulated in my body flowing outward.
Take the test yourself! Eliminate all of the mucus-forming foods from your diet for several months. Fast 1 day a week and, if possible, take a 7 day fast. Watch your urine closely. See for yourself the amount of mucus you have concentrated in your body. |

In a recent study from Finland published in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research, coffee actually showed an inverse relationship with fasting insulin and with blood sugar markers, meaning it had a positive effect that the researchers believed "could reduce the risk of type II diabetes." Nonetheless, chronic coffee consumption may raise blood sugar slightly, though what that really means from a weight loss point of view is very much in doubt. |

According to Galen and his intellectual descendants, all illness resulted from an imbalance of the four humours, and it was the doctor's job to balance those fluids through fasting, purging, and bloodletting.
Volumes of old medical texts are devoted to how and how much blood should be drawn. An illustration from a 1506 book on medicine points to forty-three different places on the human body that should be used for bleeding—fourteen on the head alone.
For centuries in the West, the place to go for bloodletting was the barber shop. |

His insulin and fasting glucose levels also dropped significantly. When I asked him how he was doing, his reply was typical: "feeling well never tasted so good!" At six weeks, Beverly's weight was down 10 pounds and her Lp(a) had already dropped in half.
Eight months into Diet Evolution, Chip is now off all his medications and 45 pounds lighter. His triglycerides are now 40 and his HDL is higher than his LDL. Beverly is down 2? pounds. SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE
Penny wanted to take off only a dozen pesky pounds, but what if you want to lose a lot more than that? Some of my patients lose all the weight they need to in the first six weeks, but others stay in the Teardown phase for much longer. My philosophy is simple: do the best you can, with what you've got, wherever you are. |
| I drink only water, coffee, and tea, but if that's too hard for you, diluted lemon juice and/or vegetable juices (but not fruit juices) work as well. fasting also refers to simply eating a whole lot less than you normally would. þSkip a meal, starting with one day a week, and then work up to every other day. The more often you do it, the more of a hormesis response you activate. þOccasionally, skip breakfast and lunch and eat all of your calories at dinner or eat only one meal a day. |
