After deflating the cuffs, he used the ultrasound to see how fast the arteries sprang back to their normal condition.
One group of students then ate a fast-food breakfast that contained 900 calories and 50 grams of fat. A second group ate 900-calorie breakfasts containing no fat at all. After they ate, Dr. Vogel again constricted their brachial arteries for five minutes and watched to see the result. It was dramatic. Among those who consumed no fat, there was simply no problem: their arteries bounced back to normal just as they had in the prebreakfast test. |

The more popular the fast food chain, the faster their food packs on the body fat, it seems. (Maybe that's what the "fast" in "fast food" really means...)
If you were to eat in fast food restaurants at least once a day, you would easily be able to meet your weight gain goal within one year and cash that $10,000,000 check. Be sure to order the largest quantities of soft drinks, fries and hamburgers, because it's quantity that counts here. Aided by menu items from fast food chains, you can pack in as much as 2,000 calories in a single meal! |

I say we ban fast food restaurants in hospitals and public schools across the nation. No hospital and no public school with any degree of ethics should support the financial success of food and beverage companies that serve disease-promoting products. This behavior has gone on for far too long. Hospitals have sold out to fast food restaurants in order to make a buck on a lease. They have, in a sense, exploited the health of their patients in order to earn some extra money. |

Breakfast really does "break your fast" from the night before: Your body actually requires some fuel after a night's sleep. For another, when you skip breakfast, you tend to rebound at lunch and dinner and consume more calories than you might otherwise. It's much harder to control your food intake when you're truly starving. One study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association* found that women who ate breakfast regularly tended to eat fewer calories overall throughout the day. |

REPPED: One of the most ridiculous things about many hospitals and surgical centers is that they host fast food restaurants like McDonald's and Pizza Hut. Now making headlines is the heated debate between the Cleveland Clinic and McDonald's restaurants. Toby Cosgrove, director of the Cleveland Clinic and a cardiovascular surgeon, wants McDonald's out of the hospital. He says (paraphrased) it is ridiculous to offer foods that are inconsistent with the heart healthy advice doctors are attempting to give their patients.
I couldn't agree more. |
| It's time to boot fast food restaurants and soft drink companies from all our institutions of learning and health. |
| In a sane world, none of these institutions would have ever agreed to let fast food restaurants and soft drink companies onto their premises in the first place, but it seems like sanity is sometimes late to the party, especially here in the United States where free market greed tends to be the number one priority regardless of who gets hurt in the process. |
| Hospitals have sold out to fast food restaurants in order to make a buck on a lease. They have, in a sense, exploited the health of their patients in order to earn some extra money. And then those very same hospitals and clinics turn around and charge patients a couple of hundred thousand dollars to perform cardiovascular surgery that was caused by the very same type of foods those patients ate in the lobbies of those clinics in the first place.

In 1970 Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000 they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music combined.5

This heart surgeon, Toby Cosgrove, is certainly an exception; he's apparently a trim man, 63 years of age, and is one of the few to have the courage to stand up against the fast food industry. And he's probably very healthy. But his colleagues, nurses and support staff, on average, are likely less healthy than Dr. Cosgrove, and they actually want restaurants like McDonald's in the hospital so that they can eat those foods any time they feel hungry. |

If the body experiences a fast infusion of sugars, a lot of insulin is required. If the sugars are metabolized more slowly, the insulin is released gradually.
This is a crucial difference, as far as obesity is concerned: fast sugar is worse for you; slower is better.
Here's why. When the sugars are absorbed slowly, the rise in blood sugar is gradual, and so is its descent once the insulin begins to do its work. The slow decline in blood sugar translates into less insistent cravings for more carbs later. |

The Dark Ages of organized medicine are fast coming to an end. What you're witnessing today with Codex, the FDA, drug companies and legislators around the world is simply the last desperate wave of convulsions from an industry that will soon follow in the footsteps of Big Tobacco to a well-deserved fall from power. Remember: for decades, doctors and the American Medical Association actually promoted tobacco as good for your health. Times change. And changes sweep through society faster now than ever before. |

The FPG measures glucose in blood that is drawn after a ten- to twelve-hour overnight fast; the OGTT measures glucose after a similar fast and then again two hours after drinking a glucose drink.
In addition to these two tests, there are two other equally easy-to-administer tests that check for the level of glycation that is occurring in the body and identify those individuals at high risk for the damaging consequences of excess glycation. We discuss these often-overlooked tests in depth in chapter 4. |

As the days and weeks rolled into months, I gave him one 7 day and one 10 day fast. In one year you would hardly have recognized this man! His family and friends were amazed at his transformation. His joints became flexible and, although he hadn't been swimming for years, he joined the YMCA and swam 3 days a week. He hadn't ridden a bicycle for years, yet he purchased one and rode for miles at a time. He and his wife took up dancing and in a year he was winning contests. The stiffness left him. He even took up the piano and became a good piano player. |

With an expression of resigned and good-natured exhaustion, Mark threw himself on the bed and was soon fast asleep. The next morning when I came downstairs for breakfast, I found him already at the kitchen table, fully recovered and apparently no worse for wear. He laughed when I sat down at the table. "Let's not go there ever again," he said. Just another ordinary day at the office!

I make it a hard and fast rule to always eat my salad first. I do this for several reasons. First I think we must educate our 260 taste buds to accept only natural foods. Therefore when you have raw foods, either a raw vegetable salad or a fruit salad to start the meal, you educate your taste buds to enjoy and want clean, live, healthy foods.
Most people start a meal with a broth or soup with sandwiches or bread. This is wrong in my opinion! |
| When the fast is over and you eat meals that are well-balanced in bulk, moisture and lubrication, your bowels will move better than ever! You should try to eat 60% to 70% of your foods in their raw state in the form of organic salads, sprouts, fruits, veggies and fresh juices.
Living The Bragg Healthy Lifestyle will promote a healthier colon and regular elimination. You can also add 1 to 3 teaspoons of this cleansing mixture (mix Vi oat bran and V2 psyllium husk powder) to your liquids and foods 2 to 3 times daily. This mixture works wonders!

When children fast all night, then miss a good-quality breakfast, their thought processes are slower. They make more mistakes, and have more difficulty remembering details. Part of the problem comes from lower blood-sugar levels; part may also come from inadequate supplies of mi-cronutrients that produce brain energy.15

Researchers found while children of all ages are bombarded with promotions for fast food, junk food and soda, 8- to 12-year-olds see the most food advertisements. This market, the "tweens," is especially important to advertisers because it encompasses the ages at which youngsters typically begin to make some of their own buying decisions.
According to Linn, "We know that marketing is a factor in the childhood obesity epidemic. It is unconscionable that 8-12-year-olds see, on average, more than 7,600 food commercials a year -- the vast majority for candy, snacks, cereals, and fast food. |

Canned and frozen foods, fast foods, and processed/packaged foods are all suspect for high amounts of salt. Read the labels carefully. You may be surprised to find that some of the things you thought were healthy, such as certain salad dressings, are actually loaded with salt. Even a bean burrito at a fast-food restaurant will be high in salt. Look for "no salt" labels on your packaged foods, and go light on the saltshaker in the kitchen and at the table. |

Well, viruses are master mutators—they are vast storehouses of genetic possibility and they can deliver that possibility incredibly fast, mutating as much as a million times faster than we do. To drive home the sheer volume of genetic potential in the viral world, Villarreal often asks people to try to imagine all of the viruses in the world's oceans—all 100,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000 of them (that's 100 nonillion for those of you who are counting). These little containers of genetic code are microscopic, but if you laid them end to end they would be 10 million light-years long. |

Clippers were not the first fast ships; there had been many fast, small frigates, revenue cutters, and smugglers' sloops. But the clippers were the first fast big ships, and set up all sorts of problems for naval architects, shipowners, and the men who sailed in them. The risk of losing ship and cargo probably doubled, but the revenue-earning capacity of the ship probably also doubled. A ship now took 90—120 days to sail from China to New York or London, instead of the 180—270 days of the East India Company fleet. New-season tea arrived much more quickly. |
