Therefore, factors that affect the nerves also can affect eyesight. Maintaining a healthy nervous system will help support eyesight and prevent eye disease.
Adaptogens for Improved Eyesight
By providing antioxidant support, adaptogens support both the nervous system and eyesight.
50. The following adaptogens promote healthy vision: amla, eleuthero, lycium, and schisandra.
Adaptogen Notes
• Lycium is extremely rich in two carotenoids (antioxidant compounds that produce the orange or yellow color in vegetables and fruits): lutein and zeaxanthin. |

Though Mavis was not familiar with this particular problem, she knew she must use the eyesight she had left—and time was running short. She brought herself up to speed by reading everything she could about her disease. If there was a solution to be found, Mavis would find it.
But what she read wasn't good. The books said doctors could do nothing for her but watch her vision deteriorate. And that is exactly what happened.
Over the next fourteen years, Mavis's eyesight continued to decline. At first she had to give up night driving. |

Eating a diet rich in raw plant foods typically immediately halts a continuous degeneration in eyesight. Eating raw foods can gradually restore poor eyesight, but this can take years. The raw foods most associated with improving eyesight are all berries (especially goji berries and blueberries), grapes, lychees, cold-pressed algae oil (DHA) and all plants containing rich pigments (such as turmeric, spirulina and dark green vegetables).
To heal the eyes, stop eating cooked fats - especially animal fats. |

My patients with macular degeneration, a chronic disease affecting eyesight, visit their ophthalmologist every six months only to have to make another appointment six months down the road. They become frustrated knowing that the only thing their doctor is able to do is document the progression of their disease. In some cases laser treatment may have only minimal effect.
If you have a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer's dementia, you are acutely aware of the ineffectiveness of treatments. |

| Yet each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans whose eyesight is far better than 20/150 have the surgery. In many cases, surgery will not improve sight and can cause infection. For a more impartial view, get a second opinion from an optometrist (a health-care provider licensed to provide a broad range of eye-care services), rather than a surgical ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who specializes in eye disease).
•Gallbladder removal. Since the late 1980s, the number of gallbladder surgeries has increased by 40%. The reason is the advent of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. |

A twelfth-century herbal recommends calendula to "improve eyesight, clear the head, and encourage cheerfulness. " Today, calendula flowers are used to treat Candida, cervical irritation, chicken pox, conjunctivitis, glandular swellings, hemorrhoids, herpes, infection, lymph inflammation, measles, mumps, smallpox, staph infection, stomach inflammation, thrush, and ulcers.
Topically, calendula promotes the formation of granulation tissue. It is used in skin creams for its nourishing, scar-preventing, and anti-inflammatory properties. |

HEART HEALTH: Goji fruit extracts significantly reduced blood glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, and at same time markedly increased high-density lipoprotein ("good") cholesterol levels after rabbits consumed them for ten days. |
| DECREASED RISK OF AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION: Phytochemicals such as lutein, cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin, present in papaya, may help maintain better eyesight longer in older people.
Tips on Using Papaya
SELECTION AND STORAGE:
• Papayas that are hard and green are immature and will never properly ripen. Look for papayas that are mostly or completely yellow.
• The papaya should give slightly to pressure, but should not be soft at the stem end.
• Avoid buying fruit that is bruised, shriveled, or has soft spots. |

They may, however, become irritated and grow so large they interfere with eyesight or make contact lenses hard to fit.
STOP SIGN
Even if Pingueculae and pterygia are removed surgically, they tend to grow back bigger and more quickly than before. Wearing sunglasses with 100 percent ultraviolet ray protection may help prevent or delay their return.
BLOODSHOT EYES
When you see people with bloodshot eyes, you may think that they've been crying or had one too many. And you may be right. When you "cry your eyes out," the small blood vessels in the eyes dilate or become inflamed. |
| Centuries later, sailors pierced their ears thinking it would improve their eyesight.
The ear was also a significant symbol in early Christianity; Mary was said to have conceived Jesus through her ears by "hearing the word of God." In fact, many early Christian paintings portrayed the Baby Jesus descending from heaven toward Mary's ear.
It's no wonder that ears have attained such symbolic significance; for without hearing, there's neither music, the voices of our loved ones, nor the sounds of warning from our enemies. We're all attuned to the role our internal ears play in hearing. |

Over the next fourteen years, Mavis's eyesight continued to decline. At first she had to give up night driving. Then she found that driving in the winter became impossible too because the gray skies would blend with the road. Winters last a long time in South Dakota.
The old Chevy now remained parked in the driveway. But the same gritty determination that drove Mavis through many a blizzard drove her to find solutions. On an April day in 1997, my phone rang, and Mavis spoke up. She'd called the right place. |

The famous 19th-century English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson was said to have suffered from failing eyesight, floaters, and phantom visions. Night-Vision Enhancement
A systematic review of placebo-controlled trials in subjects with normal or above average eyesight demonstrated no positive effects of anthocyanosides of Vaccinium myrtillus in night vision. Twelve trials met the inclusion criteria for this review. Four randomized/controlled studies demonstrated no significant effects of Bilberry on reduced-light vision. Seven placebo-controlled but nonrandomized trials and one randomized, controlled trial reported positive effects on at least one outcome measure relevant to reduced-light vision. |

Identical twins are both more likely to have high or low IQs, poor eyesight or good eyesight, high physical attractiveness or low physical attractiveness (and so on) than are fraternal twins. (See Box #2-3, Comparing Apples and Apples?)
Those are just a few of the rather obvious critiques which must be made about textbooks' assumption that fraternal twins have environments which are just as similar as identical twins. |

Sinus headaches, weak eyesight, sore and swollen or puffy eyes, and general headaches are directly related to a buildup of toxins caused by lymphatic obstruction and the backwashing of waste from the intestines. The names that describe the various symptoms are not relevant. However, it is important to know that all these symptoms are indications of the body's attempts to eliminate toxins that have accumulated at various locations. The obstruction of Vata activity, that is. |
| Vitamin A is also necessary to maintain the cornea of the eye, allow for eyesight in dim light, and reduce the severity of microbial infection. Vitamin A is only absorbed properly from the small intestines when fat absorption is normal. Fat absorption cannot be normal as long as gallstones obstruct the bile flow in the liver and gallbladder. It is, therefore, very reasonable to remove the gallstones and cleanse the digestive system so that the vitamins contained in the foods you eat can actually reach the cells in your body. |
| If the eyes don't get their glucose, eyesight will fail. If the brain cells don't get enough glucose, Alzheimer's disease may result. The same fate of malfunctioning befalls a sugar-starved liver, pancreas, stomach, as well as fuel-deprived muscle and bone cells. By not receiving enough glucose, the body begins to crave food, especially sugars, sweets, starchy foods, sweet beverages, etc., which leads to overeating and further congestion, and possibly heart failure and cancer (see previous chapters). |
| One of the most frequently reported benefits of regular sun-gazing is improvement of eyesight.
I would like to conclude this important topic on sunlight by quoting a reader's observation he made at Sydney airport: "Some years back while waiting for a flight out of Sydney I remained in the terminal for several hours. Many flights came and went. There was a great difference in the people's facial expression of new arrivals. The ones that arrived from a colder part, (not much sun) did not smile, did not appear happy, and basically kept to themselves. |
| There are other ways to improve eyesight and reduce sensitivity to sunlight. These include eye-exercise (see my book, It's Time to Come Alive), good nutrition (consisting of mostly alkaline-forming foods), and avoiding eyestrain and watching too many hours of television.
Our typical indoor lifestyle, coupled with excessive overstimulation through highly acid-forming foods and beverages, the cholesterol-increasing and dehydrating effects of television, and various other stress factors, are sufficient cause for damage to body cells, including those that make up the eyes. |
| Otherwise, you may end up suffering severe migraine attacks, memory loss, weakening of eyesight, etc. Before attempting to have any larger fillings removed you may need to take selenium (if possible in ionic form) for one to two months. Eat more foods that contain Vitamin C, such as the supergrain Chia, or red-colored fruits and vegetables, for about ten days. Use cilantro leaves and green leafy vegetables in every main meal to help clear mercury and other metal deposits from the body. |

To heal the eyes, stop eating cooked fats - especially animal fats. Large molecules of cooked fat, devoid of their lipase enzyme, can lodge in the fine capillaries of the eyes creating blockages and weakening the eye's fine-tuned motor muscles. |

Similarly, in the case of cataracts and glaucoma, you can help control how fast they develop and whether they'll cause you to lose your eyesight.
As you can see, the Major Ager of UV radiation has a big impact on your eyes by oxidizing the pigments in the retina and decreasing the antioxidants in the thin, yellowish film that protects it, meaning that these delicate cells are always at risk of being damaged through another Major Ager, free radicals. |

Doctors believed then that the beta-carotene found in carrots was necessary for good eyesight and night vision. This is true to a degree, but beta-carotene is only one of a dozen important carotenoids found in the body. It is actually more important to eat corn, leafy green vegetables, and collard greens because they contain high levels of carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthine.
Because lutein and zeaxanthine are yellow, they efficienuy absorb the blue light portion of visible light. Blue light is the major high-energy light that can damage the lens and the retina of the eye. |
