And there's no question that chronic, excessive exposure to sunlight increases risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer, which is Basal or Squamous cell cancer. I make that very clear in my book.
Adams: Right.
Dr. Holick: But there's very little evidence in my opinion that sensible, moderate sun exposure increases your risk of the most deadly form of skin cancer, melanoma. In fact, there's good evidence to suggest that it may decrease your risk.
Adams: What about sunscreen products? The sunscreen manufacturers, I think they're happy to go along with the idea that sun should be avoided. |

In this study, we learn that exposure to sunlight actually reduces the risk of skin cancer.
This is important evidence backing up what doctors like Dr. Michael Holick, author of "The UV Advantage," have been saying for years: Sunlight is actually good for you. In fact, the risk of many cancers increases when you do not have sufficient exposure to sunlight.
It's remarkable just how baffled the scientists really are with the results of the study. They can't believe everything they've been told all these years could somehow be false. |

You should limit your exposure until you build up some skin pigmentation (a tan) to help you resist the DNA damage caused by excessive ultraviolet exposure. But most people are doing far more damage to themselves by avoiding all exposure, than by any overexposure.
People need some sunlight on their skin, and finally we're starting to see some of the research come out on this. There are now a number of proponents of this theory. I've interviewed the world's foremost expert on vitamin D and sunlight exposure -- Dr. Michael Holick, the author of the book, "The UV Advantage. |

Adams: And just to be clear to the readers or listeners here, your advice to get sensible exposure to the sun, technically doesn't preclude using sunscreens in an intelligent way. Correct?
Dr. Holick: Correct. In fact, that's what I make very clear in the book, is, go out for the 5-10 minutes, be exposed to sensible sun exposure, then put a sunscreen on with the proper SPF. And I even teach you in the book how much sunscreen to use to make sure that you're getting the full sun protection that's stated on the bottle. |

And so for many people that live in northern latitudes, the sun's rays are not intense enough and long enough in exposure time to regulate melatonin levels. So people will wake up in the morning in winter time, their melatonin levels are not suppressed as they should be if you're exposed to some bright sunlight, and as a result they feel tired and they want to hibernate throughout the winter. They get depressed. |

The authors went on to write that exposure to PPCPs, especially for aquatic organisms, may be more chronic than exposure to pesticides and other industrial chemicals "because PPCPS are constantly infused into the environment wherever humans live or visit." Daughton and Ternes warned in 1999 that prolonged exposure "could lead to cumulative, insidious, adverse impacts" that may not appear until it is too late to intervene.

Of course it's all about sensible exposure, which is determined by the pigmentation in your skin. The darker your skin, the more sunlight you need in order to generate vitamin D. The lighter, or fairer, your skin, the less sunlight you need. By the way, one of the people commenting on this study was so baffled by the results they said, "It must all be due to vitamin D, and if you want vitamin D, there are better places to get it like drinking milk." It's typical advice from conventional medicine. They’re still telling people to avoid the sun and, instead, drink lots of cows' milk. |

Each year, exposure to secondhand smoke causes approximately 35,000 deaths from heart disease, 3,000 deaths from lung cancer. Smoking during pregnancy causes an estimated 910 infant deaths.16 Evidence is rapidly accumulating that the cardiovascular system is "exquisitely sensitive" to the toxins in secondhand smoke. "The effects of even brief (minutes to hours) passive smoking are often nearly as large (averaging 80% to 90%) as chronic active smoking." Regular exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%. |

Adams: So that's several hours a week they need to be getting.
Dr. Holick: Yes. But for a Caucasian it would probably be no more than 5 to 10 minutes.
Adams: Also 2 or 3 times per week?
Dr. Holick: Yes, so it makes a big difference. A typical African American with very deep skin pigmentation -- they have sun protection that's typical of a sun protection factor of 15-30. And what that means is that they can stay out 15-30 times longer. Which means that they need to be out much longer to satisfy their body's requirements of vitamin D.
Adams: Sure, that makes perfect sense.

Furthermore, the study demonstrates that when lifespan exposure to [aspartame] begins during fetal life, its carcinogenic effects are increased.
The study, entitled "Lifespan exposure to Low Doses of Aspartame Beginning During Prenatal Life Increases Cancer Effects in Rats" has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), the most widely-read environmental science journal in the world.
This is the second study conducted by the Ramizzini Foundation documenting the cancer-causing effects of aspartame in animals. |

And what about obesity? Our conclusion is obvious: Americans are too fat—and getting even fatter!
In 1986, about one in 200 were defined as "morbidly obese." By 2002, rhat number had quadrupled to one in 50. Combining that category with "obese," included three in ten Americans. In all, two of every three Americans were defined as "overweight" in 2002. |

What's clear today is that BPA is a chemical of justified concern, and consumers who wish to protect themselves from the detrimental effects of BPA exposure should limit their exposure to plastics products that come into contact with their food and beverages.
Action items
Never microwave foods in plastic containers. Heating plastics greatly increases the potential for leaching of chemicals into your food.
Avoid drinking beverages out of plastic containers. This includes bottled water, juice drinks, and others. Drink out of glass or stainless steel. |
| Given widespread human exposure to BPA and hundreds of studies showing its adverse effects, the FDA and EPA must act quickly to revise safe levels for BPA exposure based on the latest science on the low-dose toxicity of the chemical," according to the Environmental Working Group.

This increase in cancer in the skin of niacin-deficient individuals raises the issue of the link, if any, between exposure to the sun and the development of melanoma. The great majority of dermatologists have accepted that exposure to the sun is the major cause of melanoma. There are exceptions to this generalization. Dr Bernard Ackerman, after reviewing the literature and drawing on his own experience in dermatology, concluded that the connection is both inconclusive and inconsistent.^0 To illustrate, melanoma usually develops in skin that has not been exposed. |

He does advise avoiding excessive exposure to sun, however, to decrease aging of the skin.
Unfortunately, the desire to avoid the sun to prevent the development of skin cancer is leading many people to become vitamin D-3 deficient.
Rickets, a vitamin D-3 deficiency disease is, for example, reappearing in Canada and seems to be averaging about 40 cases a year. Beyond the prevention of rickets, vitamin D-3 is known to have valuable anticancer properties in its own right.

The time of exposure to stimuli (the quantity of time being exposed to defocus must be so great as to induce a transient change of your refractive state)
Such exposure tends to transiently change the accommodative balance with time, causing steadier and steadier changes and becoming a part of one's normal refractive capabilities. A myopic person, trained with myopic defocus on a regular basis, little by little will get closer to the emmetropic state, intervening over his accommodative balance. |

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
CBT is often used for symptom management by employing various techniques, such as applied relaxation, exposure in vivo, exposure through imaging, panic management, breathing retraining, and cognitive restructuring.1 The cognitive part of CBT focuses on the identification of misinterpreted feelings and the education of patients about their anxieties and/or panic attacks. The behavior therapy component uses breathing exercises, relaxation, and exposure as a means to manage the anxiety. |

Hollender: What we know about things like cancer is there usually is no one chemical exposure that causes cancer. It's the multiplying effect of maybe 10 different exposures to different types of toxins. What we're saying is to reduce that exposure where you can. Be safe. We can't afford to take these kinds of chances, especially with our children.
Mike: So your product line then -- and some of the traits that the products have -- is that the papers, for example, are unbleached?
Hollender: Or non-chlorine bleached. One or the other. If they're beige or brown, they are unbleached. |

The actual amount of nutrition that's lost varies on many factors, including the type of nutrients being measured, the temperature to which they are heated and the duration of exposure. The higher the heat and the longer the exposure, the more nutrients are destroyed. That's why pasteurized orange juice, for example, is nutritionally inferior to freshly-squeezed orange juice.
The same is true with pomegranate juice, or blueberry juice, or even cherry juice. |
