The first one is the excitotoxin book, "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills," and the latest one is "Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life." The third one is "Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients," which is directed at nutritional treatments for cancer. It contains some material about aspartame and MSG.
Excitotoxins have been found to dramatically promote cancer growth and metastasis. In fact, one aspartame researcher noticed that, when cancer cells were exposed to aspartame, they became more mobile, and you see the same effect with MSG. |

MSG is a dangerous excitotoxin linked to neurological disorders such as migraine headaches, Alzheimer's disease, loss of appetite control, obesity and many other serious health conditions. Manufacturers use MSG to add flavor to dead-tasting processed meat products.
Essentially, dead meat products look and taste dead (because they are), so meat companies use the following three ingredients to make them look fresh and taste interesting:
Sodium nitrite makes the meat look red and fresh. (But it promotes cancer.)
MSG makes the meat taste savory. (But it causes neurological disorders. |

Neuroscientist John Olney, who founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity, says that aspartic acid is an excitotoxin that stimulates neurons into hyperactivity until they exhaust and die.
Psychiatrist Ralph G. Walton, medical director of Safe Harbor Behavioral Health, had to abruptly stop his own human clinical trial on aspartame when some of the subjects had serious reactions. One participant, the hospital's administrator, suffered a detached retina and went blind in one eye. Another had bleeding of the eye and others reported being poisoned. |

Soda beverage companies are allowed to use aspartame, a chemical excitotoxin that breaks down into chemical constituents such as formaldehyde that cause nerve damage, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock, an expert on excitotoxins. And yet all these chemicals are readily allowed by the FDA in foods and drugs.
Apparently, some bona fide poisons are safe at low doses, according to the FDA, but ephedra, which never directly destroyed a single liver, heart, or brain cell, is declared unsafe at any dose. |

But if you take MSG out of seaweed or you synthesize MSG and put it into a highly concentrated form, then it functions as a neurotoxin -- that's why it's called an excitotoxin by Dr. Russell Blaylock, who is perhaps the world's foremost authority on MSG and other excitotoxins such as aspartame.
Similarly, whole grain corn is a healthful, nutritious food. But when you refined that corn and extract the sugars to make high-fructose corn syrup, you now have a blatantly unnatural ingredient that contributes to obesity and type-II diabetes. |

REPPED: Frito-Lay has launched a new "Natural Doritos" product that doesn't have the usual monosodium glutamate (an excitotoxin) and artificial colors found in its flagship product, but it does contain another offensive ingredient: yeast extract. It's listed right on the package of the new Natural Doritos products.
Yeast extract is a flavor-enhancing additive that many food manufacturers use in place of MSG. The problem is that yeast extract is a hidden source of MSG (monosodium glutamate), according to my sources (see below).
MSG, you may know, is classified as an excitotoxin by Dr. |

Watch out for this hidden excitotoxin. It's in thousands of natural foods products, and many of them are sold at Whole Foods. The store describes itself as a "hydrogenated free zone" (meaning they don't carry products with hydrogenated oils, and that's a good thing), but there are plenty of other toxins found on its shelves.
That's just the beginning of the Whole Foods warnings. I recently purchased some potato salad from their deli and was later horrified to find myself chewing on a piece of bacon. Who puts bacon in the potato salad sold at a "healthy" grocery store anyway? |

In the natural health industry, aspartame is well known to be an "excitotoxin" -- a substance that harms and kills nerve cells. On top of that, there are literally hundreds of thousands of accounts of people suffering blindness, seizures, blurred vision, migraine headaches and other neurological problems associated with aspartame consumption. No other food or beverage ingredient has generated more consumer complaints to the FDA than aspartame.
People who stop drinking aspartame often experience astonishing improvements in vision, mental clarity and neurological function. |

The effect produced also depends on the concentration of the excitotoxin, and the duration of exposure. High doses of glutamate can cause rapid cell death whereas low concentrations may not kill the neurons outright but can severely injure them. Of considerable interest is the possibility that these low concentrations slowly bring about brain cell death in neurodegenerative diseases of humans.
An animal's age is also important. Dr. Olney found that immature animals were four times more sensitive to the toxic effects of glutamate than older animals. |
| The opposite may be true of the excitotoxin kainate. When given to seven-day-old mice littie happens. But when given to 21-day-old mice, there was a widespread destruction of neurons. Kainate is also unusual in that it appears to kill neurons some distance from where it is injected.
All of these factors must be taken into consideration when comparing experiments and extrapolating or transferring these results to humans. This is especially so where one study seems to contradict another. Often the majority opinion is wrong. Scientific truth is not found by democratic methods or a show of hands. |

While there is no proof that excitotoxin exposure early in life can result in these conditions in humans, there is experimental evidence in animals that such exposure can result in behavioral changes.
In one carefully controlled study twenty-two rats were given a daily low dose of MSG by injection beneath their skin.75 The injections began on the first day after birth and continued for eleven days. When the rats were examined they were found to be shorter and fatter than control animals fed a normal diet. But more importantly, the rats exhibited hyperactive behavior. |

Two of the principle conditions that allow glutamate to shift from neurotransmitter to excitotoxin are:
1) Inadequate neuronal ATP levels (whatever the cause)
2) Inadequate neuronal levels of magnesium
One of the most common food additives, MSG (monosodium glutamate), has expanded greatly in use, doubling every decade since 1948. Aspartic acid is one half of the now ubiquitous sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet?, which is the basis of diet desserts, low-calorie drinks, chewing gum, etc. Both of these food additives spell danger for our children.
Glutamate and aspartate are neurotransmitters. |

It is important to remember that energy starved neurons are infinitely more vulnerable to excitotoxin damage.
What makes this important is that this may represent a window of opportunity for saving this zone of injured brain cells. This, of course, could mean the difference between a small, recoverable stroke and a devastating one that could result in paralysis of one side of the body, a loss of speech, or even death. (FIG 7-1)

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), for example, is a neurotoxic substance classified as an excitotoxin. Consuming it causes migraine headaches, endocrine system damage, loss of appetite regulation (leading to obesity), neurological damage in fetuses (when consumed by expectant mothers) and many other problems. This is well known throughout the industry. Baby food manufacturers, for example, voluntarily removed MSG from their products decades ago following a public outcry about the dangers of MSG to babies and infants. |

So-called "natural" Doritos is made with yeast extract, an ingredient classified as an excitotoxin by Dr. Russell Blaylock, and one that always contains MSG according to a number of health researchers. I once saw a Quik strawberry milk product, made primarily with table sugar, that actually claimed to be good for kids' bones because it contains some calcium.
There is almost no combination of sugars, chemicals and artificial colors that food companies can't hop up with some minor nutritional ingredient in order to make FDA-approved health claims on the front of the package. |

The idea is to mimic the chemistry and function of monosodium glutamate, or MSG, an ingredient that has been classified as an excitotoxin. Most people know to avoid MSG because they've been warned about the detrimental effects of this ingredient on the nervous system and especially the dangers to children and infants. But what a lot of natural food makers do is hide this free glutamate in their foods in another innocent-sounding ingredient: Yeast extract. |

Aspartame is an excitotoxin, that is, a neurotoxic chemical, and it breaks down in your body into both formic acid and formaldehyde. Now, would you like to go out and drink some formaldehyde? Well, you might do that if you were a biological specimen that needed to be preserved for dissection, but if you're a normal, healthy, sane human being, you'd never drink formaldehyde. |

Diet sodas still contain aspartame, an ingredient that's classified as an excitotoxin because of the way in which it kills nerve cells and damages the nervous system, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock.
If you're going to get concerned about dangerous ingredients in our food and herbs, there are a whole lot of other places to start rather than some obscure imported herbal products.
Of course, when it comes to quality control of herbal supplements, it's important to source your herbs and supplements from trusted companies who have stringent quality control standards. |

The best known example of an excitotoxin is MSG or monosodium glutamate, a salt of glutamic acid. High blood levels of this can cross the normally protective blood-brain barrier.
Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that is present in the extracellular fluid only in very low concentration. If levels are inappropriately raised through food ingestion then neurons fire abnormally, and at higher levels of contamination brain cells begin to die. Oxygen deficiency and lack of fuel (hypoglycemia) interfere with the energy production of brain cells and make them susceptible to damage by excitotoxins. |

| With large strokes and injuries, even the surrounding normal brain will come under free-radical attack, since the excitotoxin accumulation extends far out into the brain. Excitotoxic destruction following a brain injury can persist for more than a week after the initial injury.
Several recent studies using animal models have shown that the use of antioxidant therapy can reduce the volume of destroyed brain in cases of strokes by more than 50 percent. Animals without antioxidant treatment had a very high mortality rate, and those which survived still had serious neurological deficits. |
| One of the breakdown products of aspartame, an excitotoxin, is formaldehyde. Using a radioactive tracer method, it has been clearly demonstrated that the formaldehyde formed from aspartame accumulates near the DNA in cells, resulting in numerous deletions and strand breaks in the nuclear material. Even more frightening is the finding that the damage is accumulative, so that even drinking one diet cola a day can produce significant genetic damage. |
| The mechanism of brain-cell destruction involves oxidation of these hormones, as well as interaction with the excitotoxin glutamate.
How to Protect Your Brain
Let's put it all together. The brain contains neurons that never divide, and astrocytes and microglia, which can. Those that cannot divide are vulnerable to accumulated lifetime damage from free radicals and lipid peroxidation. The DNA damage that is not repaired prevents cells from performing normal functions and the neuron suffers from impaired energy production, decreased membrane repair, and damaged neurotransmitter production. |
| This plant contains a powerful excitotoxin that affects the same neurons that ALS does. Researchers also found that the soil in these same areas was low in calcium and magnesium, and high in aluminum and iron.
Several studies have demonstrated that low magnesium and calcium intake increases absorption of aluminum from the gastrointestinal tract and promotes its entry into the brain. Also, low levels of these ions make neurons more susceptible to aluminum, and other heavy metals, toxicity. |

But by then the excitotoxin "taste enhancing" business had become a multibillion dollar enterprise. The Ajinomoto company, the primary manufacturer of MSG and hydrolyzed vegetable protein, in conjunction with a dozen American food manufacturers, decided to protect their interest by forming a powerful public relations firm known as the Glutamate Association. The number one contributor to this "attack group" was the Ajinomoto Company of Japan. |
