The pockmarked geography of our poisonous landscape had not yet erected the familiar signposts of Love Canal or Chernobyl, catastrophes that were to follow in the later 1970s and 1980s. The DEP sent a specialist to Bridges' home who found that the mercury from one broken CFL created mercury levels in the child's bedroom that were greater than six times the state's "safe" level for mercury contamination.
